I'll be on my PC, doing whatever, when things will just stop working for about 15 to 20 seconds at a time. Clicks won't respond, if I click too much, I get the hourglass cursor, and it says "not responding".

Also, upon bootiing up my PC, it needs to do a "disk check" and I let it do the check, but as it checks the files, it will say "file 100810 is unreadable" and it says that for a few files. I don't know if this is unrelated, but it says that every time I do a disk check, and everytime I restart, it wants me to do a diskcheck. Any ideas?

Did you install any new hardware recently?

Did you install any new software recently?

Have you defragmented your harddrive?

It is possible that your harddrive, if not new, is past it's use by date. If it is new, it may be heating up too much.

Will using a program like Speedfan help reduce these lockups?

Let me take a crack at this problem:

It freezes and when it does a disk check it finds a screwed up file, right?
Good. Is it the same file each time?
OK if it isn't keep reading, however if it is press ctrl and f on your keyboard, type "stillproblv" (without the quotes) and press find to jump to the next few things after this.

Next do you have an antivirus software?
If so is it up to date?
Do you have a spyware blocker? Windows Defender is nice but it isn't enough.
If you don't have any other spyware blockers besides Windows Defender click the following link:
http://www.spybot.com and download spybot search and destroy. (the current version is 1.5)
Run the exe and install the program.
When prompted check the box beside "download and install updates."
When setup completes open spybot and follow the on-screen prompts to set it up.
After you set it up, close it.

Ok if you do have antivirus software and spybot or some other spyware blocker here is what you need to do next:

Print this post out!
Reset your computer and put it in safe mode. (Press F8 rapidly while booting until you get the option to enter into safe mode)
In safe mode, start your antivirus software.
Its ok if you get error while it loads but you can still scan with it and thats what counts.
Run a full scan. Go into options section of the program and make sure its setup to scan all files including compressed zips.
Wait until it completes...
...
Now if it found anything, atempt to clean or delete the file which ever it will let you do.
Close you virusscanner.
Open your spyware block program (or spybot search and destroy if you downloaded it)
Run a scan with it.
Again if it found any thing dispose of it any way the program will let you.
Restart you PC and see if it helped.

[stillproblv]
OK, how did you get Vista? Did it come with the pc?
If no do you know if you upgraded from XP?
Pop the install CD in the drive.
When the setup menu comes up click install (or continue, I never really seen a vista os install but its similar to XP)
You should be prompted as to which installation you want:
Upgrade or Clean.
If upgrade is not there or greyed out you don't have an upgrade disk.
If it is available select upgrade and click ok.
This should re-upgrade Vista to Vista essentially replacing any corrupt system files with clean ones.
If you don't have an upgrade disk you need to keep researching your problem for a bit and if you still come up empty handed back ALL your personal info up on to cd rom or a flash drive and re-install with either your Vista install disk or the disk that came with you pc. (if you got one)

This is by far the longest post I've ever typed!

Post if you need help. FYI: I live in the Central Time Zone (GMT -6:00)

Peace

Araknidude are you at least able to get to your desktop? Or does it stop at chkdsk on startup? If you can't get to your desktop, get BartPE and take your installation disk to make a Windows LiveCD. Then just take some external source and backup whatever important. Afterwards, obviously you reformat.

EDIT: While you're running BartPE(Windows LiveCD), try to check and see if your hard drive may faulty. If that's the case, replace it as soon as possible.
