Drawing sprites in 3d - GM7

Okay, I've looked at examples and tried to scavenge around GMC to figure out how to draw sprites whilst in 3d mode in GM7.

The original fps shooter is crap as it draws sprites using the draw_wall function.  Stupid.
Basically, I am going to have a sprite that gets drawn in front of the camera.  The camera is stationary.  Tried a couple different ways but I still do not see the sprite.

Since I am learning the 3d mode in GM7, I am using a basis on the original fps template that you can download on yoyogames crap site.  Just a ceiling and floor and camera object.

Floors and ceiling work fine just can't get a sprite to pop up in front mof the camera.

You have to call something before you try to draw 2D sprites in the 3D world.
Can't remember what that is exactly sorry, but it's clearly written in the manual, so if you take a minute to search for it you should find it easily.
