Title: Finally playing Twilight Princess
Post by: Mamoruanime on April 27, 2009, 08:49:29 pm
I like it. I really do.

I think it's a correction to what I feel MM messed up.

Honestly; the series was dead to me after Majoras Mask; but TP brings back everything I loved about it in the beginning.

I'm not that far into the game; but I'm gettin there.

Anyone else not beaten TP yet?

You'll probably change your opinion after a while. That's what most people did anyway. If not, that's great; I couldn't enjoy the game.

Well; my biggest thing is that the dungeons are lengthy and theres plenty of them :p

I still haven't completed it, I'm very close to the end though.

I really liked it too at the beginning, and don't get me wrong I still think it's a solid game.
Just everything feels like we've been there before. It feels like OOT over again and feels formulaic almost. I think that was what was good about MM, it didnt feel as rigid in its structure cause it wasn't always. Pre-dungeon --> dungeon--> boss, repeat

I loved TP. I thought it was a success on the gamecube.

I felt that TP dragged on far too much.  The story that is.
Then again, I just liked the old days when a small 20 second story plot was inserted, you were told where a dungeon was, spent a while figuring out the cool dungeon, then repeat until end game.

If I really wanted to get involved in a story thick Zelda game, I'd ask Square Enix to make one. lol

I actually like that about the series. It has more story in it in later parts. I really like Twilight Princess until the end. There were a few things. When the end came I had "ALREADY". The game felt really short. And the weirdest thing is that the last dungeon felt like it was added at the last moment to add a major character to the game. Maybe that is why I thought it was short, because I expected to get more story after that dungeon. Ah well, the next Zelda followed short after.

I really liked Twilight Princess, apart from
Show content
the f*cking sky temple
. Otherwsie I found it exciting and immersive

I really quite enjoyed TP and would probably play it over again. I liked the storyline and everything as well, and really really REALLY liked the boss in
Show content
Arbiter's Grounds
. I agree, I hated the
Show content
freaking SKY TEMPLE RURGRHGRHRGHRGRHR
. But yeah, I had a really fun time with the game.

I also enjoyed TP. The

Arbiter's Grounds was the last place I finished before my data got erased. After all this testing though, I'm going to start again and finish the job.

I was a year and a half late to the party, but can't I didn't enjoy the entire game. Toward the end it becomes clear that even with the production delays, some things still look at bit unfinished. Didn't quiiiiiiite live up to the hype but I don't understand why some people say it's a disappointment.

Played it, enjoyed it, especially the dungeons, for some reason, it was the
Show content
Temple of Time
that annoyed me the most, not the
Show content
Sky Dungeon
.

I loved Arbiters Grounds though, if only the
Show content
spinner
was used more, they should bring it back in spirit tracks.

It wasn't bad, but it really wasn't that great either...that was my biggest problem with TP. The whole game is just so...mediocre.

I strongly dislike being an animal. ... so. I have yet to beat it. I don't like Minda either. Maybe I'm not giving the game a chance. I dunno. I'll see. I'm going to start playing again soon. Maybe.

I liked it. If anything, Twilight Princess has the best replay value in the entire series; second to Ocarina, probably.

My biggest problem was with the entire Twilight Realm thing. Mass-collecting a lot of little items (the tears) shouldn't be a definite objective, rather it should be optional with benefits, like in Banjo-Kazooie. And even though the place had a cool art style, I just didn't feel anything different about being a wolf. The wolf should have been separate from Link's world entirely - the world should have been designed so the wolf would need to take a different route to what Link normally would. There was some of this, but not much. In stead, where Link could go, so could Wolf Link. Wolf Link should have been taken to completely new areas, with completely new characters (like a gang of wolves) that really defined the experience in that form.

That was my biggest problem with the game. Otherwise, Twilight Princess did a lot of good things.

Whaaat?  TP was the only Zelda game I couldn't bare to play more than once.  Where's the replay value in such a boring game?

Don't ask me.

I just feel like replaying it a lot. It feels like if I play this Zelda game, I don't need to play the others. Plus the cut scenes are nice to watch.

It's stupid logic, but it works.

Damn I really liked being the wolf, but that had more to with the Twilight Realm than the wolf form. I thought Hyrule in twilight form is more beautiful than its light form counter part. I really thought it was bad that the twilight form got replaced by the light form. Maybe they should have used the 2 worlds theme again. And don't say
Show content
in the end you could go to the real Twilight Realm, home to Midna. Because that twilight realm is a meager rip off, of Hyrule's twilight form.
My most favorite part in the game is

going through Hyrule Castle covered in Twilight.
It had such an ambiance and feel, it made me shiver.

I had a save file on my friend's wii, I remember the first few times I detested the twilight areas of the game. Looking back now though, I realize how well they were designed compared to the light world. Not to mention the colours were rather beautiful, it was the music that got on my nerves though.

I should go play TP front to back soon. It is a pretty good game. But yeah I really feel the series need a boost. We want really good graphics, voice-acting etc. I really missed that in TP.

OMFG NO, no voice-acting beyond that which is do already. Giving a voice and words to Link is like giving an identity to Link. And the best part of Link is that he has no identity and you can determine his identity for him.

A counter argument might be then to give the other characters voice-acting and not Link. But how stupid that would sound if the other characters are talking and Link doesn't say anything back. It is already on the edge with just the textboxes.

The Legend of Zelda: Half-Life

I don't like when they let you name the character...then use voice acting for everything. Didn't like it about Fallout 3, didn't like it about Oblivion...quite frankly if I call myself "Fartshickcockface" I want people in game to address me as "Fartshickcockface". I know all the 'cool kids' fear reading words nowadays, but that people are stupid should never be an excuse for being stupid.

Yeah just giving everyone voice-acting and not Link is fine. A lot of games do it and it's not considered silly at all that the protagonist doesn't say anything back. And they should get rid of the naming your character !@#$%. Everyone will just call him Link - done >_> The only thing you can name is a saveslot or something.  :-\

This is off topic, but did anyone else think it was STUPID AS HELL that in FFX you could name your character so in FFX-2, Tidus was never actually called Tidus just in case you named him something else in the first game? !@#$% pissed me off. FFX-2 was terrible enough.

ANYWAY. I picked up Twilight Princess again today. Working my way through the water temple. lol

Twilight Princess could have included at least an orchestrated soundtrack since they probably did have time to do that while doing Galaxy's track. I really hated replaying the game but had the unexpected urge to play it again which is not often. Why can't developers make games hard anymore!?

The Legend of Zelda: Half-Life

If anything, there should just be a set of pre-select names to choose from that they have voices for and such. If you chose, Gerardo for example, they'd say that or even Michael or Tyler, etc. Hopefully they'd be in-sync of course.

I always name Link after me. I rarely ever call him Link, and if I do, it's for another playthrough which I leave undone after the first dungeon.

Voice overs were done for the US (and I suppose, European) release of Dragon Quest and I was impressed how they managed to work around the naming thing by just not saying your name and the message still sounded coherent. In DQ Swords, you were given a nickname although I suppose in Japanese, it would have been easier to make characters say your name... Hmm.

Hmm... The controls aren't bad at all, I think. There might be a few teeny tiny things that could have better, at times (nothing I can think of off the top of my head right now), but nothing terrible.

I just beat Shadow of the Colossus. Try that out for horrible control/camera experience. Woo.

Which version did you play? My game's camera kept getting in the way (as in, I'm trying to figure where I am but all I'm seeing is the guy's crotch or head), the horse would, on occasions, move to the sides without me telling it to.

Mine did the same, but I didn't really have any issues with the camera and stuff o.0 odd...

Anyway; in TP I'm at the arbiters ground. I haven't had much time to play it though :S

Yeah... the intro sets a good mood and shows off great animation. But normally in Zelda games you've got your first sword in about 10 minutes tops and when I started Twilight Princess

within two hours it was doing fetch-quests and all I had was a damn fishing rod

Like with all Zelda games, I started playing it, gave up after a few days.... six months later picked it up and beat it in a week or so.

I'm eager to play MM again, now that it's out on the Shop Channel. I need to download it, I might do it today.

Exactly. I'd pretty much detest any Zelda game with voice acting for Link. It would just ruin it for me.

As for TP, it does start out slow and there are a few parts in the game that seem sort of loooooong. Still, if you don't expect it to be better than some of the more classic Zelda games, namly OOT, then I think it's a good solid game. I've played through TP 2 times and I'm planning on picking it up again this summer. btw, some of TP's boss battles are wicked sick!

The controls have been discussed hundreds of times before so I'll spare you that, except to say I didn't mind them at all. Going from a sword button to waggle will suck but it deserves a fair chance.

Actually I just tried the GameCube version a little while ago and already I like the "proper" orientation better. So I'm betting that if one tries the Wii version second, the world layout wouldn't feel right.

But the only way that will work is, if you completely free your mind from any prejudice towards Wii controls and completely forget the world around you. And let the game just take over.

...Hahaha. Sorry. X3

But the only way that will work is, if you completely free your mind from any prejudice towards Wii controls and completely forget the world around you. And let the game just take over.

I'm pretty sure people have had that happen to them while playing the other Zelda games. I loved exploring the world the in Legend of Zelda (and thankfully, text was short so the game went by fast, if you wanted it to). I'd play Link's Awakening for hours on end without realizing it was dark outside.

Still, the Wii controls aren't terrible. I only bought the Wii version because I already had a save file from it from the time I borrowed it.

I'm a little late to the party here, but thought I'd pipe in and rekindle the discussion a little anyway (a week since the last post, but one of the top topics in Gaming and Entertainment, kinda sad).

So, I like TP. I really do, and I really want to love it, but I don't. I've spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out why I don't love it as much as I do Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, but I think I may have figured it out the other day. In Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker (my favorite Zelda games), there is a certain level of. . . man, describing this is hard, but I'd call it "whimsy" or maybe "innocence". I feel like that is what makes Zelda feel so huge and epic: Link is this young, innocent kid who gets pulled into this huge, world-saving adventure. TP doesn't have that; Link is already fairly old, probably an adult (albeit he's probably like 16 or 17, but still), and he's already learned a lot about the world. This kind of dawned on me when I was trying to figure out why the TP world didn't feel very large; I mean, technically it's the biggest of all the games. I realized it's due to Link's age. He already understands a lot about how the world works, and that makes things no feel so awe-inspiring big.

Anyway, I do really like TP. Just not as much as Wind Waker or Ocarina of Time. (Also, I think the dungeons are too long. I don't like having to play for a minimum of 2 hours if I want to finish a dungeon, I like relatively digestible dungeons, but lots of them).
Title: Re: Finally playing Twilight Princess
Post by: Zaeranos on June 09, 2009, 06:44:08 am
Link in TP is of the same age as Link in TWW and adult Link in OOT. And the only world knowledge that Link has in TP is that of Ordon Village. Because in the beginning it is mentioned that Link has to bring a present (the shield) to the Royal Family and that that would be the first time he would venture into Hyrule. Considering that there is no access pass to neighbouring lands, means that he has never been beyond the boundaries of the outer Village area. Or at least Ordon Province.

Also the dungeons in TP are of similar length to OOT and TWW. The puzzles are a lot more difficult. In OOT and TWW, when there was an bump in the wall or something had a different drawing on it, it was  immediate considered to be part of a puzzle. And the same pattern else where meant also a part of the puzzle. In TP special patterns and bumps, don't necessarily mean they are a part of the puzzle. In one room it is part of the puzzle in another it is just decorations. That is why the dungeons seem longer, but they are of the same length.

Link in TP is of the same age as Link in TWW...

?.... really? Adult Link in OoT, yes, but Link is a really young boy in TWW, and it's not just the cell shaded graphics, he is young. Anyway, I agree with the rest of your statement (which I did not quote), but I don't understand where you came up with this. Educate me?
Title: Re: Finally playing Twilight Princess
Post by: Raen on June 09, 2009, 03:22:33 pm
Yeah, tWW Link is 12, whereas TP Link is 16 or 17. I don't know where you got that.

As for dungeon length, all I know is it takes me 1 hour tops to get through a dungeon in TWW, and in OoT it takes maybe 1.2 hours or so. In TP, it almost always takes me 2 to 2.5 hours, and this isn't because I don't understand the dungeons/puzzles already.

Educate me?

It is not a fact. I have never been able to find an official statement about the exact age of Link in TWW. But it is stated that the Game begins with Link's Birthday and him becoming of age. This 'becoming of age' is something I have always associated (no matter where or what story) with the ages 16 or 17, just before adulthood.

You might want to say that Link is to small for that, but do consider that most people aren't fullgrown at the age of 16. Additionally Tetra's crew had some characters of smaller height than Link. Link is also a lot taller than the 'Killer Bees'. And the size of Link only becomes apparent in villages with other adults. You hardly notices next to a monster.

But like I said, I've never seen an official statement about his age in TWW and it is more of an association.

Hm, that is interesting. I never really noticed that about Tetra's crew and the Killer Bee's before.

Link is TWW is a kid Link, not an adult Link and he's 12. The trophy for Toon Link in SSBB says so.

I tried playing it on the Wii. I couldn't stand collecting those little !@#$% scarab things. And whenever I had to fight an enemy, I was too lazy to flick my wrist. So I said !@#$% it. Maybe I'll try it on the Game Cube one day. Plus, the wolf thing sort of freaked me out.

At the video rentals I've been to, you've always been able to rent a console as well. A former housemate did it often. He would rent a console and a game for the weekend and did nothing else but play the game.
