Title: your favorite video game music?
Post by: Moldrill on June 27, 2012, 05:38:40 am
I'll start with some good stuff from Mother 3
All the Mother games have excellent music! The classics like Mario, Zelda, and Final Fantasy are also all obvious choices for great video game tunes.

I liked Mother 2's soundtrack too, speaking of the Mother series lol.. and the tracks you listed are still good. It's probably the quirky-ness of the music style that appeals to me. Homely Yado Inn is my favorite out of the three you listed. ;p

I'll start off with the Metroid series on the NES.

I don't know, it seemed impressive for a chiptune. :P

Battle Garegga "Stage 1"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf9aESy0mys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tf9aESy0mys)
Castlevania Symphony of the Night "Wandering Ghosts"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwuUyIph4Ok (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwuUyIph4Ok)
Zelda Minish Cap "Cloud Tops" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j5XhBBkFV0 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j5XhBBkFV0)

Lmao. My list could go on, lol..

WW and Metroid music both are top notch. A video game's music is almost as big of a factor as the game itself in many ways. It bugs me when modern games have shitty music, or no real music to speak of. One of my only gripes about Dark Souls is the lack of music. The silence was cool and creepy for a bit, but even some ambience would work great.

The quirkiness of Mother music is indeed great, it's why Cave Story also has great music. Nice throwback to old chiptune music as well.

Panzer Dragoon! "Flight"  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4oTU0srt2I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4oTU0srt2I)

You are instantly cooler for liking this. I LOVE Panzer Dragoon.

As for mine, I love any kind of music composed by Grant Kirkhope. My favorite use of his music would probably be for the Banjo-Kazooie games: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DQfnj33-QU

I'm also a HUGE fan of the Final Fantasy series and its music. If anyones ever played Final Fantasy 8, one of the first things you'll notice is that the music used in the opening is incredible: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMLDGYj00aU

I also am a huge fan of the Mother series and was lucky enough to import Mother 3 shortly after it came out and the music is incredible. My favorite track would have to be King P's theme that was originally used in the trailer for Mother 3 back when it was going to be for N64: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXfV_zLVLnc

Don't know if you have played Chrono Trigger (I prefer the audio of the DS version), but it's REALLY good. Listen to Frog's Theme, Ayla's Theme, Lavos' Theme and Chrono Trigger (the song). Also, I'll never forget champion battle Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal. That 16 bits music made me love that kind of music.

Yeah...  I think you would be hard pressed to find very many people in a gaming community that haven't played Chrono Trigger.  I was actually going to mention chrono trigger this morning, but then I had to go to work.  The music is really good in CT, but it still isn't quite as good as songs from say...  FF6 in my opinion at least.

I have a keen love towards a lot of old videogame music, such as Chrono Trigger's soundtrack, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Zelda: A Link to the Past. However, I must say, I haven't been able to stop listening to anything done by Danny Baranowsky, more specifically his work in Super Meat Boy. I love his Binding of Isaac soundtrack as well, but SMB never gets old. Here is an example of his work from SMB:

Aaaaand a cover done by FamilyJules, who recently collaborated with Baranowsky on a Binding track:
