Discussion / Super Mario Country-Side, Metroidvania game idea
« on: February 05, 2019, 11:39:03 am »
An open ended side-scrolling Mario game with RPG and elements. This is an idea I've had for a while that I recently fleshed out more. Enemies give Exp, and leveling up slightly increases HP and Jump height (very slightly for jump).

Bowser kidnapped Peach, and shattered the Star of Peace forged by the blacksmith Luigi from a fallen star. The carpenter Mario built a fortress for it to be housed in, which also was destroyed.

Peach says she is allegedly sick of being kidnapped and rescued and agrees to marriage, for Queens need no rescuing. Mushroom Kingdom is now ruled by King Bowser and Queen Peach. Bowser cracks down on immigration and has imprisoned Luigi. Nobody can remember who the famous Mario Bros. are even. The Star Fragments were given to various newly appointed bosses of each area.

Party members can be switched out at any time, and a fallen player must be revived with a 1up Mushroom. Toad is the first to join, as he's the only one who remembers Mario. The ruler of the Toad Hinterlands is Regular Bowser, as opposed to King Bowser in the Mushroom Castle. Regular Bowser is weaker and can only spit a small fireball instead of flame breathe. After defeating him the player gets the Koopa Aspect. By giving it back to him Bowser realizes his power has been fragmented, and asks Mario to help him, despite not remembering who Mario is.

Second party member is Luigi, once freed from the Under Land Dungeons boss.

Areas, a connected world rather than separate levels/worlds (and bosses)

- Mushroom Kingdom -
Mushroom Castle - Captain of the Royal Toad Guard // Queen Peach and King Bowser // Dream Goomba

Toad Hinterlands - Regular Bowser (star fragment)

Under Land Dungeons (via mushroom kingdom sewers) - Zombie Plumber Patriarch

Under Land Graves (via cemetery in Frypan Steppe) - Boo Undertaker (star fragment)

- Lichen Kingdom -
Frypan Steppe - Rock Bowser
Lichen Mtn - White Mountain Chainchomp (star fragment)

- Mossy Kingdom -
Mossy Woods - Queen Piranha Bush // Forest Heart Root Bulb (star fragment)
Lava Swamp - Flame Bowser

- Clouds -
Terrapin Fleet - Paratroopa General (key to Cloud Castle)
Cloud Castle - Emperor Lakitu (star fragment)

Rock Bowser gets Bowser's Shell Aspect, and Flame Bowser gets the Fire Aspect back. Leaving only the Power Aspect with the imposter controlling King Bowser. When Regular Bowser has his Koopa, Shell, and Flame Aspects he will join the Party.

Before entering the Mushroom Castle the player needs 5/6 Star of Peace Fragments found from bosses in various areas, as well as Bowser's Bullet Bill Cannon weapon, found on the Terrapin Fleet of the Clouds area, to break down the door. Toad won't let you enter however unless you've rebuilt the Peace Fortress, with a large sum of Coins and Mason's Bricks. For the completed Star of Peace needs a home or else it will feel cheated and return to the sky, since Stars have a mind of their own.

After defeating the Captain of the Royal Toad Guard, Queen Peach and King Bowser, you regain Bowser's Power Aspect, and a villain called the Dream Goomba reveals he is the one who shattered Bowser's Aspects and the Star of Peace. He is the final boss.

Graphics / Custom Mario tiles from UMA years ago

Hey long time no see whoever still inhabits this board. I was thinking about an old Mario fan-game I never made, and found some graphics made by another old frequent resident Uma for it. It was going to be "open-world" as in there'd be multiple paths - left, right, and more locations and backtracking like a Metroidvania. I was planning on some RPG-ish elements too, like leveling finding boot upgrades to jump higher, new overalls for more defense, fancy mushroom dinners a health upgrade, finding different types of fire-flowers in the wild for different uses, etc

Man I should make that game still, if only I ever knew how to code. I'm more a music man, and I pictured this game with ambient Earthboundesque Mario music

Entertainment / listen to this Norwegian prog-rock album from 2011

Spirits of the Dead ~ The Great God Pan

I guess it's their second album, but it's hard to find any info about this band.

edit: They are an awesome band, with their style being a strange mix of 70s progressive rock, Led Zeppelin, and folk influences. Very obscure band, maybe not as obscure in Norway though. The album is really well produced, everything comes together perfectly. Just check out a track or two at least.

Audio / 18 Interlocked Strings (27 seconds only...)

Sometime soon I will have a more finished version with more than 27 seconds. This was inspired by the poly-rhythmic interlocking repeated guitar riffs from 80s King Crimson.

There are three guitars layered here. Two of them are playing in 5/8 time, the other is in 7/8 time.

Feedback / Unresponsive pages nearly every time i post

Only on this site. I'll try and keep this post short because 99% of the time my posts / topic attempts will freeze up and I'll get an error in Google Chrome saying the page became unresponsive. I have a 6 year old iMac so that's probably not helping the problem, but it is only on ZFGC, so I'm guessing it's not just the old slow computer.

Discussion / PvP Hylian Knights v Ganon's Tribal Belt
« on: September 29, 2012, 02:52:46 pm »
I have no actual ability to make a game. No idea how to program. This is just a cool idea I had. If anyone wants to help make this happen, I'd love to help design and sprite / make music. That's the extent of my abilities.

The game would have a few different maps, medium sized areas. The game would be online PvP only. It's a fairly simple idea, and much more doable in terms of development than an epic full scale single player Zelda game.

LttP graphics
Death match style gameplay

To the Hylians, the Old God - Ganon, symbolizes the greed and pig-like nature of man. He is also the idol deity of the lawless Tribal Belt. They are constantly at war with the Hylians, to fulfill the chaotic desires of their God. The Hylians on the other hand, worship the ancient Old Hero - Link.

Other idea to make it more interesting:

After a large number of consecutive kills without dying, if the option is turned on before that match, the player will be attacked by the ghost spirit of an ancient lord. A bubble will then surround the player and ghost NPC enemy, so other online players can't interfere. For Hylian Knights, the ancient lord will be the Hylian Prophet: Old Man. For the Tribal Belt, the ancient lord will be Agahnim. If the player loses, the other team gets two kills. If he wins, that player will temporarily embody the spirit of the Old God - Ganon (Tribal Belt) or the Old Hero - Link (Hylian Knight)

Even if you're not a big fan of the Grateful Dead, today an influential all Americana rock and roll musician would have turned 70. It's a shame he had to die the year I was born, 1995, for no matter how many live shows and audience recordings I listen to I'm positive I'll never know what a GD concert was like.

So if you aren't a big fan, check some out anyways and celebrate this fantastic musician.

I'll start with some good stuff from Mother 3
All the Mother games have excellent music! The classics like Mario, Zelda, and Final Fantasy are also all obvious choices for great video game tunes.

The Devil of Zordan's Funky Grass Cutters:

He is the unseen evil force behind ZFGC. He is the reason all the older members who quit must return at some point and visit the cursed forums. He is the reason Demo 4 was never released... he ate it. It was once rumored that The Real Methuselah ate him in retaliation, but the truth was quite the opposite. The original creator of the forums is no longer around because he too has been eaten by Diabolus. He is the reason the Gamer's Advance merge happened. He is the reason the forum is not as active as it once was. He is Diabolus de Zordan!

Also once you reach 4336 posts he eats your soul. Mammy has been soulless for a while.

Characters / The Farrowers
« on: May 25, 2012, 12:57:50 am »
My actual second character is going to have a fairly long story that I thought of as I went for the most part. I'll update it over time since it is kind of long, and the end result has a story that sounded a lot better in my head. I still think it's kind of neat, so here goes nothing.

The guy is there for size comparison, hopefully I'll have some better art later for it. The colors / patterns on the shell are not what I pictured in my head, and looks pretty sloppy. Just to give you an idea of what I'm picturing though. The final will be vector art probably.

Part 1
2039: A group of Helium 3 miners from the WULP (Western United Lunar Program) made first contact with alien life. The creature was as large as a whale, and it was no green man in a spaceship. This animal, later called a farrower, was a massive ovular shape, with a hard crustacean like shell. The shell was a myriad of constantly shifting colors, with thousands of short vibrating tendrils protruding from it's body. The only other defining characteristic was four longer whip like tendrils or feelers positioned in a line side by side. The miners had little time to react or think of what to do when the strange being floated down and positioned itself in front of them, hovering a few feet from the lunar surface.

The moment the creature stopped it's descent, the four terrified representatives of the human race had no need to worry about wondering what to say. "We come in peace," or a simple "Hello," was unnecessary. A low hum was emitted from the creature, and the whiplike arms gracefully wavered. The minds of the miners were simultaneously subjected to beautiful sounds, heard only by them. They later described these sounds as impossibly beautiful, but that the only real sound emitted was a low frequency hum. One miner later described the sounds in his head as beautiful noise, almost musical. The miner was sure it was a language, though of course the meaning of the words were unknown...

Audio / Song for a girl
« on: May 04, 2012, 06:06:29 pm »
Just wrote this song for a girl I like, she asked me out to prom earlier this week. The title, For Ellie, is a slight pun on Beethoven's Fur Elise, which was actually written to a girl, supposed to be For Therese.

Characters / Guitar Brah
« on: May 04, 2012, 04:33:46 pm »

Guitar Brah is one cool bro. He loves to lax, drink keystone light, bro out with some other bros, and get lucky with his main bro Chad. His favorite band in college was Dave Matthews Band, and he'd go out with Chad, Skyler, and a few other bros, and get way too drunk. They'd be those obnoxious guys at every concert who are hitting a joint and talking to each other shirtless instead of listening to the music.

You may be thinking he doesn't sound like a very cool bro at this point. This is true. In his college frat days he was definitely not a cool story bro. After discovering progressive rock like King Crimson and YES, he started being less of a bro bro, and more like the kind of bro you wish was actually your bro-ther.

His favorite shirt is the one pictured above, red pick guard and black sound hole. He is in fact, an upside down guitar with a badass mustache. He loves playing with himself, and composing beautiful songs. In fact, he speaks fluent Spanish since the only guitar he plays is himself. In Spanish, to say "To play the guitar" you have to say "Tocar la guitarra," which translates: "To touch the guitar"
