Entertainment / So I'm enjoying me some Chrono Trigger DS..
« on: November 20, 2008, 05:17:25 pm »
I must say, it's pretty awesome so far. I mean, nothing new gameplay wise yet but later on there will be.

Controlling with the stylus takes a bit of getting used to, but not much. I still prefer the D-Pad. Everything is set up nicely in the menu, I really like it.

The extras are pretty awesome, art, music, and so on.

The arena is awesome as well. You basically pick a starting monster (looks like a baby nu) and you send him off to different eras to train then you come back later and you can check him out, battle him, etc. Pretty cool.

ARRRRRRRR.

I won't ask if anyone else has seen or heard of it because, if you haven't, get with times plox ;-;

This game looks awesome. I've been watching a lot of gameplay videos (of both the 360 and PC version) and god oh god I want this game badly.

I tried the demo out yesterday, sadly it runs like !@#$% on my computer: http://i36.tinypic.com/alhr8i.png

Though, my love for Valve forced me to EB Games to pre-order it yesterday. I'm hopefully getting a new PC soon anyways (within a week or so), if not soon, EVENTUALLY WOLOL.

Discuss this awesome game.

Entertainment / Steam "Cloud" coming this week.

Valve announced Steam Cloud a set of services for Steam that stores application data online and allows user experiences to be consistent from any PC, is coming out this week. This free steam extension will ship with the Left 4 Dead demo coming on Thursday for you who pre-ordered and Nov 11th for you who still having doubts for the game.

the information stored and accessible through the Steam Cloud includes keyboard, mouse, and gamepad configurations, as well as multiplayer settings such as spraypaint images.

The Steam Cloud will "just work," meaning any user changes to their game options will propagate to the Cloud by default. Upon logging into Steam from another PC, these settings will be brought down from the Cloud and automatically leveraged by the game. Any configuration changes on this second machine are then synced to the Cloud for future sessions.

Valve will add Cloud support to its back catalog of Steam games. And it will be available to all publishers and developers using Steam, free of charge.

HL2net: Could Steam Cloud store saved games online?

Doug Lombardi: "Not initially, but it is planned for a future update."

Sweet, no more having to set the settings for my games 3983469384 times.

Also Saved Games online? YES.

Cashing in on election fever, EA today announced that, as part of an upcoming update for Mercenaries 2, both Sarah Palin and Barack cakefarts will be made available as playable characters. Palin in her trademark red jacket and hair, cakefarts in his trademark...suit. Sounds a little nutty, but seeing cakefarts punch a swarthy Venezuelan in the face is a lot funnier than you can probably imagine.

There's a video in the link.

It looks pretty badass with cakefarts. I mean, cakefarts jacking a tank, !@#$% yes.

Palin just looks plain stupid in it though. It would have been better with McCain.

I don't have a source or anything, too lazy to look right now.

I just seen on the news that two neo-nazi guys plotted to go on a country wide killing spree of african-americans or something then go to some school and shoot it up and stuff and their main target was Barack cakefarts.

Who didn't see this coming?

Entertainment / Best Proposal Ever

Ah yes, to be a nerd and in love. Instead of a pedestrian proposal, an individual known as TheRealPfhreak hacked Chrono Trigger to ask for his girlfriend's hand. There's a clip of the heck, and it's on the long side, so if your attention span is as short as ours, skip ahead to around the 6:20 mark for the money shot. Here's TheRealPfhreak:

On October 17th, 2008, I proposed to my (now) Fiance. Originally I wanted to retun to the site of our first date, Mount Baker, near Bellingham Washington. Sadly, there was no discrete way to get her out there. So I turned to the next best thing, digitally recreating the mountain!

But why stop there? I figured I'd try and recreate many of our other favorite memories — stargazing, dancing, even her favorite song lyrics (from the Princess Bride). I'm a college student who is studying Computer Science, and I wanted to do something unique that used my talents, so I did some research on Rom hecking, as she was playing through Chrono Trigger....

When her name appeared on screen (blurred in this video), she glanced over to me (on one knee, with the ring out), wondering, "How did they get my name in this game?" When she saw the ring, she reread the proposal, nodded yes, and said, "You are such a huge nerd! I love this!"

I spent a long time debating whether or not this proposal was awesome or incredibly stupid. Her friends, and my friends helped talk me into it, and it was a huge success!

Congrats! Word of advice: Leave the software Chrono consummation hacks out of your wedding night.

Updates / [ZFGC Weekly] The Big Question - October 26th, 2008
« on: October 26, 2008, 07:35:19 pm »
How would you feel about a radio station for ZFGC?

The radio will play a range of music, depending on which DJ is currently broadcasting.
The "DJs" are going to be Me, Wally, DJ and most likely Dantz.

We'll all be playing a range of music.

I'll be playing Video Game music.
Wally will be playing Rock/Hard Rock/Metal, and will sprinkle in some rap/techno if he feels like it.
DJ will be playing JPop and all that stuff, you know DJ :P
Dantz, I'm not sure yet, he'll probably be a mix of whatever, I haven't talked to him really about what he'll be playing.

A 43-year-old Japanese piano teacher found herself in jail after viciously murdering her ex-husband...in MapleStory. According to reports, the woman's virtual, big-headed anime husband suddenly divorced her in mid-May, which lead to her logging on with the 33-year-old man's username and password and deleting his character. When the man discovered the death of his character, he called the police. The alleged virtual murderer has now been jailed for suspicion of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating electronic data, which could carry a five-year prison sentence or a fine of up to $5,000.

"I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," the official quoted her as telling investigators and admitting the allegations.

My god, do you know what this means? I need to start playing Maple Story immediately!

Santa Ana, Calif. - Skylar Deleon, a former child actor who appeared on the popular kids’ TV series “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers,” has been found guilty on three counts of first-degree murder.

A jury in Orange County, Calif., convicted the now-29-year-old Deleon on Monday of murdering three people, including a couple who were tied to an anchor and thrown off their yacht off the California coast.

The jury found him guilty of three counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances for financial gain and multiple victims.

Deleon’s victims were an Arizona couple – Tom Hawks, 57, and wife Jackie, 47 – who were last seen in November 2004, after setting sail aboard their 55-foot yacht with Deleon, who they believed to be a potential buyer for their boat, according to The Associated Press.

Prosecutors argued Deleon, and two other men, took a test cruise with the couple posing as interested buyers, forced them to sign over ownership of the yacht and then tied their bodies to the boat’s anchor and threw their bodies overboard.

The bodies of Tom and Jackie Hawks were never recovered.

Discussion / [Early Idea] Dragon Warrior Monsters Online
« on: October 22, 2008, 03:37:00 am »
Well, while doing the dishes earlier tonight I was just thinking of various things, like making games and all that crap and Dragon Warrior Monsters popped in my head, then I thought... that would make a great online game. So I started brainstorming around it.

It wouldn't be COOP or anything, it would just basically be an MMO of sorts.

All the traveler gates would be open freely with no set objectives. The Great Tree would be freely open. Perhaps even add the Great Log and all it's "gates" from Dragon Warrior Monsters 2. There could even be new areas added into the Great Tree and Log and even a whole new area all together, say like... the Great Branch or something.

Owners of the game could also set up tournaments via the Arena. You could also battle each other if you, let's say, talk to the woman at the desk, she says "Okay whoever is battling stand on those two square." and when you do the battle will start between the two.

Trading (items, monsters) could work by going to a certain area in the Arena. Breeding (whether it's just yourself, or between two players monsters), you could go down to the Breeding area.

There could be quests you could perform for gold, exp for monsters, etc. Tiny medals could be collected all throughout the areas like in DWM and traded for items and monsters even perhaps. There could also be something like Party Quests of the sort.

As for what it would look like, I was thinking maybe something like this:

Though the screen could get really crowded so instead of the traditional screen transitions it could just be one big open area which would make things less crowded.

The top right could be for any necessary information like which server you're on, PMs, etc.

Anyways, it's just an idea I'd love to see happen.

Entertainment / Sony jerks off to your conversations on PSN.
« on: October 21, 2008, 10:54:17 pm »

In case you just missed it last week, Sony updated their Terms of Use for the PlayStation Network.

Apparently, not only did Sony state that they can use your content without asking for your permission; reading the finer print now, it turns out that Sony now has the right (given that you agree to the Terms, of course) to tap into your PSN convos. Though it wasn't specified, we presume this is applicable to both voice chat or text.

SCEA reserves the right to monitor and record any online activity and communication throughout PSN and you give SCEA your express consent to monitor and record your activities. SCEA reserves the right to remove any content and communication from PSN at SCEA's sole discretion without further notice to you. Any data collected in this way, including the content of your communications, the time and location of your activities, your Online ID and IP address and other related information may be used by us to enforce this Agreement or protect the interests of SCEA, its users, or licensors. Such information may be disclosed to the appropriate authorities or agencies. Any other use is subject to the terms of the applicable Privacy Policy.

A mouthful indeed, but in short, it's basically: "we're watching you." This is what's apparently at issue now though. As GameDaily points out, this throws concern over everyone's right to free speech - what with a sense of intrusion from Sony, folks talking over PSN might feel restricted and uncomfortable, maybe even violated.

I wonder though... maybe this ToS/ToU update was prompted because Sony heard of the Pentagon's research into how MMOs can be used by terrorists? They did, after all, make a bold statement about forwarding your conversations "to the appropriate authorities or agencies." Sounds serious, eh?

http://ps3.qj.net/Big-Brother-is-watching-Sony-can-tap-into-your-PSN-conversations/pg/49/aid/125174

Cool, now once I get my PS3, I can tell them that they're assholes because the cable for PSP TV Out is only good for HD TVs.

This from the guy who had an Italian plumber throw fireballs at goombas and turtles.

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's main man, says that he is "concerned" that developers are using violence too much in their games. Guess he's not a fan of Grand Theft Auto 4, huh?

I don't want to curb freedom of expression, but I am concerned many developers focus on excessive violence in order to stimulate people's minds.

I believe that here are more ways of grabbing players' attention than violence alone.

Well you know what they say. Violence isn't the answer. Put the sword down, Link.

Miyamoto also talked about the troubles the economy is currently facing, saying that:

We need to eat in order to live, that’s our first priority. But entertainment and the enrichment of our souls must come in second place. Nintendo’s mission is to take advantage of improving and cheaper technology to create reasonable and affordable entertainment. It’s very good value.

Well, I'll be damned... As complaints about the PSP-3000 screen's interlacing issues pile up at the PlayStation forums, all Sony had to say was that they were "looking into it."

While everyone's waiting for a response from Sony U.S., the folks at Engadget have gotten word from Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. The SCEJ representative that contacted them, in Engadget's words, noted that:

the interlacing-like lines are just "features" of the new LCD, and currently, there are no plans to fix it with a future software update since it is in the hardware.

They're... what? Features? Not a very keen feature, if that's the case. Nevertheless, a serious question is now posed: are you willing to put up with scanlines on your screen for Pandora glory care of DAX and the TA-090? Buying a PSP-3000 now requires serious thinking, it seems.
