I created this topic to get your opinions on the death penalty.

I personally believe it's perfectly acceptable. Some people deserve to die.

I'm also of the opinion that some people deserve to die...
Criminals can kill, while the police can't kill them - or at least, that's how it works here, and I'm 100% against that.
Criminals are bad persons no matter what, and they put other people's life and result of their work in risk, I'm totally against that, so I think they deserve death penalty.

No, capital punishment just lowers law enforcement down to the level of criminals.

No one has the right to decide if someone lives or dies, no matter what they have done. For all you know the person you are about to execute might have discovered the next step in technology or medicine had he been allowed to live, and in doing so saved millions of lives.

The ideology of law enforcement is to reform the criminals, in what way does murdering them do that?

And I'm not sure I even want to contemplate what happens if a miscarrige of justice occurs. Murder is irriversable, you can't just say to the corpse 'Sorry, we were wrong. Heres you life back.'.

Actually, I am. I support the death penalty, but I also support giving them about 15 years before they die, so that they can be witnessed to.

Thats tantamount to cruelty, having something like that over your head and drawing it out for years.

And need I remind you what your Eighth Amendment says "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. ".

Actually, I am. I support the death penalty, but I also support giving them about 15 years before they die, so that they can be witnessed to.

If you have to argue based on my spelling rather than the point, your not very good at debating a subject are you?

I'm with helios, death sentences are very unfair. The criminal can just rot in prison if he or she did something that bad. Helios basically covered the rest of what I was going to say.

And you think rotting in prison wouldn't be torture? Heh, funny.

Not really, commiting a crime warrents the release of the few basic rights you give up in prison.

Hell, quite a few people are better off in prison, they get healthy meals, somewhere dry a to sleep, paid (if badly) work. Thats more than most homeless people get

Besides I was talking about psychological cruelty.

Really? I would far prefer to be in jail, better food and living conditions.

Besides that is beside the point, it was an example.

Yea, I know and I've heard multiple times on how childish and immature that is...
Still, this is the kind of mentality that's developed in the zone I live - it's the city with more crimes in Portugal, and everyday I hear stories about friends being assaulted, thiefed, physically damaged, it's totally a pain to live here... Our city usually appears in the news with stuff like "3 policemen were killed", "Gunfight kills 15 persons" and that kind of stuff... Still I'm amazed that barely anyone knows that 3 innocent girls were assassinated during a Halloween Party near my house...
Blame me if you want, I blame my opinion by the environment I live. :)

You have free-will to create your own opinion, don't blame others for it. I live in a county where nealy all children, addicts and assorted criminals are demonized by the media. That dosen't mean I believe they are all evil criminals bent on hurting me and my family, despite what the government and the media would have me believe.

Edit: Anyway can we get back on topic, this seems to be digressing a lot.

I agree with Helois, the death penalty is wrong, for many reasons:

1 - The point of prison is to right what you did wrong, and to sort yourself out, dying doesnt accomplish that, does it??
2 - If their is a mistake, thats an innocent life there, could you be the guy who put him down to find him innocent??
3 - Psychological effects on the guards as well, dont forget im sure thier effected.
4 - Most murderers have a psychological problem, why not treat it? Thats like saying everyone with Schitzophrenia should die... (sounds kinda pathetic now, right?)
5 - Its ethically wrong...
6 - It goes against everything our societies are supposed to stand for.
7 - Think of it this way, if a child does something wrong, and the parent slaps it for doing so, when the child feels someone else has done wrong, it will slap them... a similar effect works with the death penalty. If someone does something wrong, and the government kills them, it encourages people to kill if they feel others have done wrong... is this not a HUGE issue???

I agree with Helios and those points MaJoRa has brought up.
Just like Helios said, it's just not right to let someone have the right to decide if someone should live or die.
People should try to make people regret the wrong things they have done and try to make them to better persons etc.
Improve them, don't just let them die with a mistake they haven't got a chance to really regret.
The feeling of regreting something like this must be horrible, and that feeling they deserve, not to get rid of it just like that :S
And it's good to regret bad things, that's the most important thing; that it is a good thing and that it isn't all about feeling horrible etc. It's kind of a way to "appology".. don't know how to explain it <__< I'm too tired to think but... what I mean is... everyone should also get a chance to regret... And it is up to each person to really mean that they have regret something or not.

Blabla sorry if you can't understand what I have written, i have to sleep <.<

The death penalty is okay, because:

1. some criminals can't be treated
2. our society stands for protecting us. Killing evil people does that
3. i think most people can understand it's not okay to kill someone just because they're bad. the gov't can decide who's dangerous and who's not. (yes, I trust our gov't >:()
