Quote
Speaking this week at a forum on game industry law, Valve's Jason Holtman said the company views pirates as "underserved customers" and used a win-win anecdote about Russia showing how they deal with them.

According to GameDaily, Holtman said all Valve games are released simultaneously in Russia, a market rife with game piracy. The reason: "Because Russians are reading magazines and watching television — they say 'Man, I want to play that game so bad,' but the publishers respond 'you can play that game in six months ... maybe.' "

The narrow, Western-dominated view of markets leaves "tons of undiscovered customers," that are just as willing to buy games legitimately as they are to download pirated copies. They just want to play the title, he reasoned, not necessarily stick it to the man or participate in a criminal enterprise.

"When you think about it that way, you think, 'Oh my gosh, I can do some interesting things and make some interesting money off of it,"Holtman said.

Holtman also poked holes in industry groupthink around retail vs. online sales, and charging for downloadable content. It's some fresh, customer-oriented thinking.

At least they get it and aren't all asshurt over pirates. This is exactly how I started buying Valve games. I used to pirate them, started to love them, then bought them and swore to never pirate Valve games again.

Valve <3

I "acquired" portal before I had a paypal account, then went and bought it when I did.
Always buying games from valve now rather than pirating them, especially since they offer resonable prices, one of the reasons why computers > 360. I'm not paying $100 for every game I want.

Yet, Steam hasn't stopped piracy at all and has been cracked tons of times to allow you to download basically any game steam offers.

Yet, Steam is still an anti piracy measure. People just aren't as retarded as they had hoped.

Yeah, they make us pay a shitton for them, at least on steam they're pretty much the same as US prices except a little more because of the US dollar etc.

I have almost all of Valve's first-party games. I'm missing Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike: Source, and Day of Defeat: Source.

Really people.

I don't pirate games *innocent whistle that suggests otherwise ;)* but if I did I'd only pirate the ones I couldn't get here or didn't care about enough to buy (if I didn't pirate it I'd never play it. KoToR 2, for example). Games like Portal and Half-Life 2, you don't pirate !@#$% like that: You buy it and feel damn good for doing so.
