Entertainment / ATTN: Mario Galaxy 100%ers *obvious spoilers*
« on: December 01, 2007, 09:11:12 am »
I've gone out of my way to get all of the 120 stars in Galaxy(all the while losing hundreds of lives due to crazy physics when trying to get the purple coins of Dreadnought).  I was told by Rosalina that I'd unlocked a new galaxy, but that I had to save Peach(again ._.) before going there.  I did that, watched the extra ending, was told Luigi was unlocked, saved, played as Luigi and got the first star, saved and quit, and proceeded to look for the new galaxy.

I checked every single nook and crany, but could not find it.  Finally I resorted to going to IGN's boards for help.  I was told that an extra launch star on the back of the trial planet would take me there, but when I went there, I found no such launch star.  I didn't even get a message on the Wii message board like I'm supposed to.  Is there a glitch in my game, or what?  Please don't tell me I have to do it all over again as Luigi just to get it.  That would be funking cheap.

Today's game: Super Paper Mario

Note: Because I haven't actually finished this one yet(though I think I will by tomorrow), these are more like first impressions, but my opinions will probably be the same by the end.  Besides that, I've already spoiled the ending of the game for myself anyway.

Now, onto the review.

Gameplay - Because this is less of an RPG and more of a platformer, it certianly plays different than the first two Paper Mario games.  However, it still does retain a lot of elements from them, such as Mushrooms that heal you and coins that buy you Sleepy Sheep or Boo's Sheets, etc. and let you stay at the inn.  There are differences, though, such as no more turn based battles, your partners are quite different, and you don't only have to play as Mario(but I won't spoil any of that).

The puzzles that have to do with the flipping are great, imo, but other than that, I'm not too sure.  The Pizls don't feel as near as useful as any of the partners in the past PM games, but at least they aren't characters who are actually supposed to be enemies.  Since when did Goombas and Koopas ever decide that Mario is a bad guy?

A bad thing to me is that most of the gameplay could have happened on the Gamecube except for pointing at the screen to get info.  Pressing a series of buttons to use the Showstopper or pressing the A button at the right time to blow away enemies was far deeper thank shaking the Wiimote could ever be.

I think it could have made for a better game if it wasn't only 10% gameplay and 90% walls of text.  If it's supposed to be a platformer with RPG elements, I don't want to have to sit through a story that takes up the majority of the game.  I want much longer levels wherein you jump and defeat enemies more than you talk to people.  With that said, though, the gameplay that there is, is awesome.  And, at least to me, it's not as easy as it looks.  I found myself close to dieing plenty of times.

Graphics - Uusually I don't care whether the graphics are good or not, but it'd be stupid to say that the stuff in Super Paper Mario isn't spectacular.  This is the best art style I've seen in any game, ever.  Well, except for the design of some of those npcs, but the rest makes up for it.  I especialy like that place that looks like it's pixelated, and not just because there are a few X-Naut references.

Music - There isn't much memorable music, sadly, and none of it is too impressive.  I don't really care, though.

Story - So far it's good, but I would rather have it in a Paper Mario game hwere it is necassary to have a story, rather than a spin-off platformer.  I guess that's part of the reason why I'm not liking it as much as I loved the story in The Thousand-Year Door.  Besides that, I don't find Dimentio to be as good of a villian as Grodus.  I do think the idea of Luigi being a villian rather than an ally should be expanded though.  Not permanantly for the series, but perhaps there could be more of a rivalry going on between him and Mario.

Overall score: 7.5/10, otherwise known as good.  I'm impressed by a lot of what the game has to offer, but not in the fields that are most important to me.

It's not *really* finished, because I lost inerest in it between the first 19 or so chapters and the last one, but I figured it's worth posting here anyway before I write my next one.

Here it be.

Entertainment / The one and only Paper Mario 2 thread *spoilers I think*
« on: October 21, 2007, 02:50:33 am »
After beating Metroid Prime 1 and 100%ing Metroid Prime 2, I decided to trade them in and see if I could get a game I haven't already played and that would take more than a few hours to get through.

My sister wouldn't stop bugging me and asking me to get My Sims, but eventually I decided to get Paper Mario 2(although I still have to beat Bowser in PM1), and I think it was a good deal.

So far, after having had completed a chapter, the game seems a whole lot more complicated than the first, even if most of the controls are the same and there's still the basic plot of gathering seven mystic objects and pwning someone at the end.

Really, though, the crowd seems to add a little depth I suppose, and the idea of your partner having seperate HP was good.  And some of the mini-games involved in the attacks I feel are a bit better.  Plus, a lot of the puzzles are neat and require much more thought than those in the recent Zelda games(or pretty much any Zelda game after the Oracles or MM, and OoT is pretty easy, too).

As much as I loved the art style in the first Paper Mario, PM2 simply pwns it.  Rogueport seems a lot cooler than Toadtown, the underground city isn't too bad, etc.  But my favorite has to be the Boggy Forest, even if it does seem like sort of a recolor of rwo of the levels from the first Paper Mario.  I also love how the special effects usually play off of the idea that the world is made of paper.

I don't really care for the music, though.  It's not bad, but it's nothing special.

Overall I think I like it better than the first, although the bosses so far have seemed easier than in PM1.  And does it mean I'm going too fast if I already got through a chapter at nearly six hours?

And finally, what do you think of the game.

Other things not of much importance: I got to play a little bit of Phantom Hourglass, but it's nothing *really* new. >.>...<.<...
And supposedly I might be able to get MP3 as an early birthday gift, unless it's worth it to get Super Paper Mario with having already spoiled the story for myself.

Entertainment / DSs sure are expensive
« on: October 08, 2007, 02:51:06 am »
I decided I'd try and get to play Phantom Hourglass, so I went to Gamestop's site and found out the cheapest used DS there was priced at a fooking 80$.  I checked around some more and said "WTF" when I found that a used Gamecube costs a lot less.  How can a handheld be more expensive than a console?  Or even more expensive than the console games coming out in November or December?

Other Projects / UPDATE-Nicet *horrible demo and screenshots inside*
« on: March 05, 2007, 05:36:19 am »
The Story(and gameplay):
On the island of Niceta, the people that live there go about there business, farming and working on the land, and in return being blessed by the Queen her her ability, known as Nicet, and so everyone lives happily.

But one day, a dark force flows from the castle in the forgotten lands of Perma, and spreads across Niceta, covering it, blocking the sunlight, and its glittering reflection from the waves.

From out of the darkness comes a tall entity, hiding its face with a mask.  It overtakes the kingdom, lifting it up to the sky, and kills the Queen, taking her power for his own.

Now, is you you, one of those who were ment to protect the kingdom at all costs, who must save Niceta and destroy Nerezza Nascosto, the dark force, with your own power: Nicit.  However, Nerezza will use his power to change reality and make it harder for you to reach him(thus changing the gameplay in each level, wherein you have to get to the goal: the "N").

The demo:

http://www.ripway.com/members/getfile.asp?file=\Demo0%2E1%2Eexe

Most of the sprites are just placeholders.  The reason there is no music or sound effects is because I didn't care to find any yet, but I will eventually, along with fixing the jumping.

Three small screenshots:

Thoughts?  Anybody willing to help in any way?  I'd be glad to have help from anybody who could sprite, or compose music.

Entertainment / I just bought Final Fantasy V *Spoilers!*
« on: January 26, 2007, 07:47:54 am »
Or 5, or whichever one it is.  This is the third Final Fantasy game I've played so far, and so far, it is my favorite, even though that isn't really saying much(although, I enjoyed both Chrono Trigger and SMRPG very much, even if I never did finish them), as I haven't gotten very far at all in the other two. :P

Anyway, I just came to ask, what should I be expecting?  And what do others think of this game?  I'm more interested in the next one in the series(or at least I think it is) after reading the review in the recent Nintendo Power issue.  Is it worth buying?

Graphics / Fan art FTW
« on: January 16, 2007, 06:14:34 pm »
Well, recently, I made some Ganondorf fan art, and figured I'd post it, even if the qaulity from my brother's cell phone isn't all that great.  It isn't finished, though, or, at least the concept isn't.

zomg GANON!!1

Entertainment / Action Replay?
« on: January 15, 2007, 11:39:46 pm »
I'm not sure if it is against the rules to talk about this, but if so, sorry then.

What I want to know is, if anyone here has one, where did you get yours?  I've searched just about everywhere, and can only ever find Gamesharks, and that is rare, and there aren't any Gamesharks available for the Gamecube, right?

Entertainment / Sages' symbols? *small TP spoilers*
« on: January 08, 2007, 01:35:28 am »
Has anyone noticed that there are the Sages'/Temple symbols over the dour of the fourth dungeon?  And how come there are all but the Shadow and Forest symbols?

11
In the ruins of the Temple of Time, there's that door which you can only open from one side, even though you have access to both sides of it.  But I figured out a way that you can open the door from the wrong side:

Just simply hit the wrong side of the door with your sword, and when the A icon flashes on the screen, press it, and Link will automaticaly go inside the "real" Temple of Time, as if he were on the correct side of the door all along.

Maybe this can also be done before getting the Master Sword?

Entertainment / Ordon Sword <<< all others *Major end of TP spoilers!*
« on: January 04, 2007, 04:51:17 pm »
NOTE:I've only tried this on the GC version, as I don't have the Wii yet.

I'm not sure if anyone has noticed this, but in the final four battles of the game, the Ordon Sword is useless, making it so you absolutely HAVE to use the Master Sword(I'm not sure about other enemies or bosses).  Yet I think I found a way to make the Ordon Sword more useful:

For example, during the fight with Zelda, two great spin attacks ussualy allows her to be hit by her own magic(each time, not to actually end the battle).  After doing the second great spin, quickly press start and switch to the Ordon Sword.  If done correctly, Zelda will still be hit by her own magic, and will eventually be defeated if you keep doing this.  Then there's the next cutscene, but what's different about it is that Link is holding the Ordon Sword instead of the Master Sword.  Close to the same thing can be done with all the other bosses, although the thing with the great spin doesn't work with the final fight with Ganondorf.

On both Ganon, and Ganondorf on horseback, you can hold B to charge a spin attack, and, as quickly as you can, switch back to using the Ordon Sword, and yet the spin attack will still be useful, and the Ordon Sword will take place of the Master Sword, except for during most of the final cutscene.

Even though the spin attack won't work on the final Ganondorf fight, there are still other ways to do this.  For example, when you attempt to do the chance thing, just before you clash swords with Ganondorf, you can switch to the Ordon Sword and still continue to try and push him back(I've only succeeded at this once, though, unlike all the others I mentioned and will mention, and the first time I tried, I did it too early.  I think it's just luck).  I also noticed that in mid-swipe when using the Ordon Sword, if you switch to the Master Sword again, Ganon will somehow automaticaly block.

And finally, when you attempt to do the ending blow to Ganondorf, there are only a few second between when you press A and when it goes into a cutscene where you can pause it, and switch equipment.  Change to the Ordon Sword, unpause, and Ganondorf will magicaly get to his feet as if you never knocked him on the ground.  But Link will still do the ending blow, and you will defeat Ganondorf.  Sadly, we don't get to see the Ordon Sword in Ganon's chest, or in the Pedestal of Time.
And what's worse is that the Ordon Sword seems to have disappeared out of thin air(at least until the scene where Midna leaves).

Has anyone else done this?

Entertainment / Golden Skulltulas (OoT)
« on: December 09, 2006, 09:12:38 pm »
Does anyone know the locations of any of the Skulltulas in any  of these areas?

-Desert Colosus
-Haunted Wasteland
-Gerudo Valley
-Lon Lon Ranch
-Hyrule Castle
-Hyrule Field
-Forest Temple

I've looked almost absolutely everywhere in each of those areas and found all that I could, but I still only have about 93 of them.

Well, I made this out of bored, and am too lazy to sprite anymore poses as of now.  Too bad I'm not good at programming, or I'd use it it a fangame.  Anyone else is free to use it though, if they want to.

« on: December 03, 2006, 05:47:22 am »
Now, I'm not sure if there are any other forums specificaly for just posting LoZ fanfiction, so I'll post this here for now.  As you may have already guessed, this is supposed to be a sort of sequel to MM, or what I think would happen after it.  I've been meaning to post this for quite some time, but I never got around to it.  But here it is so far:

PROLOGUE-

As the sun rose into the sky, the four gaurdians of Termina returned to their homes.  Link, a boy just reaching adulthood, watched them as they left, until he heard a familiar voice nearby.  He turned to see who it had come from and saw a tall, skinny man with a mask in his hands.  A large pack towered over the man, but it seemed as if it weighed almost nothing at all to him.

"So...the evil force has left this mask.  Incredible!" the Happy mask salesman said, staring into the eyes of the mask.  He lifted his face to look at Link.  "And it was you, just a boy, who made it so."

Link said nothing in return as the salesman walked over to him.

"No hard feelings," he told the Skull Kid.  "After all, almost nothing will stop those who are couragous from also being curious.  But you must understand that you have to be extremely careful.  Now, because I have found what I need, the rupee of which without my wallet would be empty, I must be going."

The mask salesman continued to walk away now, towards the entrance to Clock Town, but then turned to face Link again.  "Oh, and by the way: you seem to have done a very good job.  Not only did you save this world from shadow, but you have also saved its people from their own personal problems.  You have parted them and their doubts, worries, and fears.  You really are a true hero.

"But beware; for as long as there is evil in the hearts of men, darkness will always be revived."

He stood there, waiting for a reply, but all the ensued was silence.

"Why don't you say anything?" he asked, and for the first time since Link had met him, he looked truly puzzled.

After a moment, the Happy mask salesman turned back around and continued to Clock Town, his pack of masks swaying back and forth, and finally he disappeared for good.

Entertainment / Questions about TP for the Gamecube
« on: December 02, 2006, 04:52:22 am »
Well, even though I have already gotten the Wii version(although I'll probably have to wait until January to be able to play it), I have just about enough money to get the Gamecube version, if the price will be the same.  But before I buy it, here are a few questionsI want to ask about it(and hopefully they'll be answered):

-When exactly is it being released in the US?

-Will it be available everywhere?  Because I've heard you could only get a copy a certian way and not just out of a store??

Who could these guys be?  We know they're Sages who guard the Mirror of Twilight, but are they any more than just that?

I mean, why do they have those symbols from the medalions of OoT if they aren't related?  Or are those symbols related to all of Hyrule?  Is it just a reference, like the stained glass windows in TWW?

Well, although I didn't expect to get it today, and although I wasn't one of the people camping out in front of the store, it turned out instead of celebrating my birthday when I was supposed to(on the 21rst), I got to go out and get something today, and so I got TP.  I still have to wait until Christmas to be able to play it though.

Entertainment / Confusing control scheme...???(TP related)
« on: November 13, 2006, 08:23:36 pm »
I've watched tons of videos on TP(for the Wii) on youtube, and they've all confused me.  The HUD doesn't show the sword assigned to any buttons, and yet it's used. ???  And, I'm confused as to whether the sword will be controlled depending on how you move the remote, because the animations seem like they always were, since OoT, even though the fairy on the screen moves in different directions.  Is anybody sure of how the game is controlled??
