Audio / Re: Music Preference
« on: April 10, 2011, 03:47:38 am »
Yeah, I guess a lot of it depends on the type of game. Looked at from another angle, it seems hard to imagine say, a Studio Ghibli / Miyazaki film without orchestral music composed by someone like Joe Hisaishi... yet interestingly enough, some of their earlier stuff like Nausicaa used a lot of really retro sounding synthesizer tracks alongside orchestrated music.

Reminds me of an RPG battle theme on the SNES haha.

Audio / Music Preference
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:51:10 am »
Just interested in how people view video game music these days. I assume a lot of people will favor 8/16-bit music for its nostalgia and often catchy melodies. There's also the chance that people prefer "modern" video game music because it's impressive, high quality, recorded by a live orchestra, etc. There's any number of reasons for preferring one over the other and I suppose it depends on the game it accompanies, but in general, I think it would be interesting to hear what people have to say.

I really had no idea which forum to post this in, but here... It's a tentatively finished project using photography and music I made (the music is old, video is new).
This was my first timelapse project so this is more of a ... warm up, I guess.

Also... it looks like it's being letterboxed here. Watch it on youtube if you want to see it.. larger..?

Wow, I'm surprised they would come out with the sequel on the DS, instead of a console... mainly so they could use the strength of the larger consoles to create the immersive cel shaded graphics Okami is known for and the large overworld... I guess this will be a smaller game.
Graphics aside, the DS will be good for the touch screen, of course, and I'm excited to see how it turns out. Looks like the overworld is still going to be fairly large, especially for a DS game. It just looks like the frame rate is a bit slow right now... :x

So, it took a little while to get everything uploaded and edited, but I'll start posting some photos from my trip to Vancouver. I'll just update the topic with more parts as I go...

Part 1: UBC Campus/Nitobe Garden

(The forum layout has an annoying wrap/scroll feature meaning you'll either have to drag the photos into a new tab/window or use the scroll bar at the bottom to see the whole photo).

O god, what has disney brought us?!  I'm not going to go see it for this reason now >.>

Just go watch the Japanese version with subs if the song bothers you that much... >__>
Although I really can't say I like Disney's version haha. Really not the right approach to a movie like Ponyo... then again, with all the little brainwashed kids in America that get exposed to this autotune-garbage-music they would probably prefer what Disney did than Hisaishi's orchestral backing :p

Just my two cents, if you feel like working on this piece some more - take it or not.. just some thoughts I had while listening to the piece. It's a really nice song.

Definitely echo the comments on your dynamics. The piece is too mid and treble heavy with a lack of bass. Even if you just want to increase the volume on your bass notes in the piano it would really anchor the piece down. If you really wanted to keep working on it I would say you could even go as far as to add something like a fretless bass melody.

As for the effects, the delay is juuuust about right. It really adds to the piece. What I'd be tempted to do though is to increase the "wet" parameter on the delay ie. reflections thereby dampening some of the echoes. I'm not sure which effect plugin you're using so it might not have that setting, but it's something to keep in mind... you might also benefit from a few well placed notes up an octave or two every now and then to lighten up some of the echoes.

I played this for a while up until that fight with The Cleaver but got bored with it kind of quick... I just found it to be too repetitive and well, I'm not a fan of the genre in the first place. Not bad though if you like slightly stereotypical horror/shooter games. Not bad at all, just not "great".

All over.. some of it is free, some of it isn't. A great place to check would be kvr-audio though, and freesounds. I do buy some of my samples though, more and more lately as I've had a few commercial jobs that need better quality.

As far as thissss soundtrack/album goes I still haven't made a lot of progress on it. I have about 3 songs that are about half finished but not worth posting at the moment. Things have just been reallllllllly busy.

Whoa, what happened to you Retro :P Haven't heard from you in ages.
Anyways, thanks lol. I hope some of these tracks could somehow be as good as the Rainfall song. I AM still working on this, but between a Monday to Friday job and loads of stuff to do in the summer, progress has been... slow. I'll keep the topic updated though, when I finally do finish something.

Audio / Published Audio work!
« on: May 09, 2009, 05:09:45 am »
So I got an email today telling me that the game I had written some music and done the sound effects for, had been published recently on a fair amount of flash game sites. I'll leave a list here, but they said it should be easy enough to find in a google search. The game is called "Scrawlder" and it was put together by a Chinese game dev team. You can find it here:

Agame.com
Spel.nl
Jeu.fr
Spielen.com
Minigry.pl
Spel.eu
Giocaregratis.it
Zapjuegos.com
Clickjogos.com
Games.co.id
Flashgames.ru
Mygames.co.uk
Game.co.in
Egames.jp

Anyways, I guess I felt I should promote their work, and mine.. the game's alright, sometimes kinda hard but it's pretty decent. Just glad to see some work of mine published for once :P
Apparently they'll be putting it on a few other sites eventually. Comments and even criticism (though I can't really change things now lol) are welcome as usual.
