It's been a while since I was last on these forums.. I wonder how old you were when I was around here. I was 11 when I used to go on these forums back in '06. Things change, and I remember you just being a kid too, lol. I remember when you had set up that BinaryPhoenix website, if I remember correctly.
How things change :). I'm 23 now, so you can work out my age then from that :P. Whatcha up to these days?

Let me know what you find out. It'd be nice if you could still test on-device without a license so the homebrew scene could thrive without having to heck the device. What's the word on other languages? I'd much prefer C++, I already have a codebase in that, and I largely chose to write it in C++ because of low level functionality and multi-platform support. I don't think Sony would be too happy about the low level functionality and would much prefer the relative safety of things running in a VM.
I doubt it will happen, one of the main reasons of using C# is to easier allow the code to run in a sandbox (Sony are honestly the most paranoid people I have ever known when it comes to the security of their consoles, they really don't want any security holes that allow unsigned code D:), plus I think they reckon that if anyone wants to do C++ they will just sign up to the developers program (it's actually surprisingly easy to get into from what I've been reading on the scedev forums). Especially if you go down the mini's route.

Not to mention that low-level access might cause issues with Sony's write-once-run-anywhere policy (well anywhere meaning any certified sony devices :P).

Quote
Speaking of, the C# you write for this is JIT'd, right? It better be :-X
If it works like the PSP/mini's stuff on the PS3, I think it's emulated (non-JIT), they also have some crazy executable format that can be transported between any of their platform without recompilation.

That said, I work on the toolchain team. The jap's do all the emulator stuff, so not something I know a lot about.

Lol no chance of ps3 :). Works for any sony-certified devices. Which at the moment is basically vita and the xperia phones. You'll need to sign a contract before you can debug live on the devices though, otherwise you'll be using the simulator.

I'm already able to test on device. There's no agreement or anything that I can remember.. Maybe after the beta phase that'll be in place.
It's after the beta. During you can test all you like.

Beta ends in November I believe.

From what I read in the PDF that I think you're referring to, the only thing you need is the $99 license to deploy to your own device once the beta period ends.

2. Test and Debug
You can test and debug games and applications developed with the PS Suite SDK on the PlayStation®Vita system and PlayStation™Certified devices.

*After the Open Beta period, you will be required to sign a separate contract.
I presume thats probably the same thing as the $99 license fee.

One of my uni mates is working at Rare at the moment. I'll be honest, from what he says, this does sound very like the developers over there XD

Are they still even the same developers that worked on such N64 games? :S
Couple left I believe, not many though D: Most have splintered off and made their own companies by now.

Quote
I got contacted by Rare once ages ago when they found my CV online for some games testing position too lol
lol, what did they say?

I got totally blanked by them when I sent them an application :(. Mind you I had to do it for uni work so tight butthole I put very little effort in ;_;

AC1 was the same mechanic over and over. Imagine a bunch of little CoD clones crammed into one game. That's AC1. AC2 had diversity in their gameplay. It wasn't predictable.
Variety != Innovation.

51
The transition from AC1 to AC2 is something I would call innovative. If AC3 turns out to be the same as Brotherhood and Revelations, then I'll bow to you on that one. I am indeed an optimist and an idealist.
I'm curious, what do you define "innovative" as? All the AC's have the same gameplay mechanics and roughly the same graphics, the only thing that really changes is some extra story, few new weapons, etc.

I disagree. They will be vocal, but most will pirate the game.
As I said, the people in those boycott groups will typically do so anyway. No net loss to anyone.

Quote
I can agree with your line of thought on the formula, but my own opinion was geared towards innovative mixed with traditional. (See: Assassin's parkour)
And look how much they have milked AC over the last few years? Not what I would call innovation. As I said, as soon as a franchise has been created that makes money, the publisher will not allow the developers to modify its mechanics, and will then proceed to milk the !@#$% out of it.

Quote
Bringing me to my final point, "advancing as a company" is not equivalent to advancing as a business in my eyes. When I think of 'company', I think innovation.
That's a very optimistic and idealistic view of this industry I'm afraid.

Quote
I think Apple, a company whose aim is (while ultimately profits as any business aims for) to come up with new ways to do something, or to make something more functional.
No, Apple's aim was to make their technology dumbed down enough that the average joe could use it (thus boosting sales -> more profit, profit is always the ultimate aim).

Quote
The iPad was innovative.
No it really isn't. It's a shiny table with the same functionality of an ipod/iphone at a far greater expense. The most innovative thing Apple has produced recently is the app store market system - which on a side note has also destroyed a lot of parts of our industry.

Quote
The companies and businesses that want appeal to me should try to advance society as a whole, either before or alongside profits.
Won't happen. Especially not in the games industry, to much money at stake.

-Intelligent gamers split from Activision and start focusing on different games
No, they will do what they always do; be very vocal about disliking the DRM, but still buying the game because they want to play it. This has been repeated time and time again.

Quote
-The "loyal" gamers that stay call blasphemy if Activision tries to get creative and change the CoD formula
This is a non-issue. Activision will never change the cod formula. It's the same thing most of the large publishers do now, given the global financial state. They will typically only fund games that have history, and are known to reap money. Professional game developer is not an area you want to be in if you want to be creative.

Quote
-The result is that Activision stops advancing as a company
Nope. Activision as a company will still bring in the profit and pay the shareholders, their ultimate aim - they are a business after all.

I'm just very jaded with most gamers "boycotts", I've almost never seen any of the gamers actually follow through. Typically they just use it as an excuse to justify pirating games, which they probably would do anyway.

Also, this dosen't mean I agree with DRM, or any of the other routes publishers are now taking, I'm just being realistic about what I expect of the majority of the gaming community.

54
This is why piracy happens. I'm just sitting over here with my books and free internet games waiting for the industry to implode.
Don't say that, I'll be out of a job D:

The games industry crash of the 80's was bad enough, with the scale games are at currently, another crash would wipe out a good proportion of the western worlds GDP.

It won't happen anyhow, no matter what people say and how much they say they will "boycott" the next xxx game/console, you will never get enough people to do it to cause any noticeable impact. Everyone's gotta play that shiny new brown coloured shooter afterall!

From an insiders point of view, the rumours have been hilarious recently (at least in terms of orbis, I know !@#$% all about durango).

I've been thinking about you lately with the recent next gen (especially orbis) rumours, wondering how much you know :p
More than enough lol. :3. Just nothing I can say ;_;

We got politely reminded about confidentiality when the codename was leaked :P

Yes, yes it is :3

MinAlien has been trying to sell his left testicle to get hold of a copy, totally have to rub it in lol :3
"THAT WAS MY LEFT TESTICLE."

Ah, I see. Wow, they support C#! Are they now using Microsoft's Compiler Suite as their backend now or something? Or are they still using GCC, just added support for Mono?
