I am interested in getting into RPG Maker, but what version would you guys recommend that I use? 2000? 2003? XP? VX? Also, where do you recommend that I get it?

I recommend using game maker or even learning how to use flash (both are equally easy)
RPG Makers are too restrictive!

You can get RPG Maker from Enterbrains site, but it's not free. And it's simply not recommended because it doesn't teach you game design properly...

Here's where you can get VX(the other versions are on the site, too)

It's a womping $60 USD. Honestly, you can find more flexibility and functionality in GameMaker which is only a fraction of that price. It's really your choice, though. Good luck :).

Take it from an rpg maker vet...It's fun to play around with if you've never touched programming of any type.  However, it doesn't prepare you for real game design and it's very limited.  If you want to start at a basic level below Game Maker, I would say look into Multimedia Fusion.  I haven't used Clickteam's software since The Games Factory, but it will teach you basic concepts of variables and collisions and such.
