*This is not a Graphics Topic but a Gaming Topic*

Well if you look at the sprites used for the NES Zelda and Mario, they didn't have black outlines but brown ones instead.

Can someone tell me why they didn't choose black outlines?

And it doesn't stop with Mario and Zelda. Check the others too

It was more than likely due to pallet limitations; granted black isnt an unusable color; they probably avoided using it because they didnt have enough *other* colors to avoid link blending in with the dungeons and caves (well, dungeon rooms with that old dude in em')...

Mario from Mario 1 didnt have an outline o.0 Are you talking about Mario 3? (I dont count Doki Doki panic as a mario game... <_<)

Its as Mamoruanime said: Palette limitations. If you look at Mario, you see three colors, red, brown/green-brown, and tan. The NES can have four colors but the fourth color is usually used as a transparency.

The same applies to Gameboy games and alot of other 8-bit systems.

The brown was because of the 4-color limit. Like it was said, the 4th color being the transparent one. The brown was used because Green was used for the clothes, the peach for the skin, and the brown for the hair/boots/etc. Which would leave the white for the transparent background. They couldn't use a black, besides, Link's hair was brown.

Its kinda hard to explain ya know...

Edit: Lolz, I'm not very good at explaining things... D:

Heres an image to explain better.

You see the 4 color pallete? Thats what they used.
Brown: Hair Boots Ect.
Green: Clothes.
Peach: Skin
White: Transparent Background.

They also used the brown for the outlining, cause I mean, he doesn't look to good without it ;)

1. What he looks like in game.
2. What he would have looked like without an outlining.

Yes Mario did. Look at the Super Smash Bros NES Banner

Thats because whoever made that banner put a black outline around him, probably to help him blend better.

Also which banner are you talking about anyways? o_O

I never noticed 4 colours, one being a transparent colour, I also remember seeing a sprite in some or was it just a tile? Well say the bottom half was 3 colours, and the top half had one or 2 colours that were changed, I guess you had to work with the limitations, it's astonishing to see how far we've gone.

I suppose knowing these limitations would be useful for those wishing to make a game that simulates NES graphics and gameplay, probably the easiest game to start off with. I wonder what these games would look like if they used up the 4th colour, you would see a non-transparent block backing the sprite O.o, now that would look terrible...thankfully only newbies make this mistake XD, but hey, everyones got to start somewhere.

I saw pixel art as a painting, I think all pictures on our walls in the house should be pixelised and recoloured to 8-Bit <_>.

That's all well and good, but then why did later games like Super Mario Bros. 3, Kirby's Adventure and the original Mother have outlines and overall better graphics?

Hoffy, thats because in later releases they learned how to work with the palette and make it look nicer, in supermario bros 3 they still use 4 colours and one beeing a transparent colour it is just that they knew better what they were doing. Like in most consoles near the end they see how to make things look better see donkey kong country graphics for example.

Spriting ability was developing for pretty much the first time ever then-- you have to give it some time, let them practice, see what they can do.  Just like 1st gen PS2 games look signifigantly worse than last gen PS2 games.

Well say the bottom half was 3 colours, and the top half had one or 2 colours that were changed, I guess you had to work with the limitations, it's astonishing to see how far we've gone.

That's because NES graphics are stored in tiles... even sprites. So some games, they used a sprite that, rather than use the same palette for all the tiles the sprite is composed of, some tiles have a different palette than the other tiles.

Final Fantasy is an example of this. Not a very good one, but whatever...

Do you notice that this Black Mage is breaking the palette limitation? There are are five colors in all (including the transparency). Well, what they did to create this effect was to use a different palette for Black Mage's hat and body. So, in reality, the bottom part of BM is black, peach, blue, and whatever and the top part is black, peach, tan, and whatever.

You can see a part of BM, when his facing the side, where part of his hat is in the lower portion of the sprite. That's where the bottom half of him starts. :P

BTW, sprites aren't inserted into the game with their colors and everything built in, they use a neutral palette or something and the game later on paints them or so I understand.
