Graphics / Doppelgänger
« on: April 22, 2010, 06:50:32 am »
Doppelgänger:
[dop-uhl-gang-er; Ger. daw-puhl-geng-er]
–noun
a ghostly double or counterpart of a living person.

Doppelgängers are traditionally thought of as an exact copy of yourself living completely unaware of your existence. Generally, a doppelgänger is considered something like an evil twin or darker counter part with the opposite ideals of your own. However, the origin of the word tells of a different creature that predicts death. If you intersect paths with your own doppelgänger, it's advised that you do not engage in any sort of contact, specifically meeting eyes. There have been several reports throughout history of people in power, such as Abraham Lincoln and Queen Elizabeth I, who have seen this type of wraith mere weeks before their own deaths. Marked as an omen of ill fate, the doppelgänger is a rare sight but an inevitable fear.

Despite the Germanic folklore that burned these ideas into our minds, I see the doppelgänger as something different. The purpose of any lore is to instill a sense of fear and caution through telling tall tales loosely based on facts or, more often, misunderstandings. Every person is said to be born with a doppelgänger, though few ever see theirs. What if this myth was actually a mental truth only solidified in "human" form to heighten the anxiety of the story? What if our doppelgänger was mere subconscious imbalance? It is in this thought that I believe our doppelgängers to be the voice in our head that constantly hinders us, the part of our psyche that binds our bad habits and the fire that fuels our untamed tempers. We live alongside these fabled phantoms and combat their oppressive misfortunes on a daily basis. From mundane problems [such as lack of sleep] to major accidents, we are forced to choose between sanity and white walls because of the jaded shadow embedded in our brains. In death, we hope to finally find our true selves, thus our mind lets us rest by granting sight of that within. This is the true nature of a "doppelgänger."

I'm beginning a new series of photos and these are the preliminary shots.

Let me know what you guys think. :)

Graphics / Hand drawn animation?
« on: April 21, 2010, 04:54:31 am »
How cool would it be to animate something? It'd totally be a personal accomplishment of mine.. I was watching The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Howl's Moving Castle today and I was talking to a friend about how much of a dream job it would be if I had the patience to actually animate something.. So, I was curious as to what it was like... so I drew up four frames real quick and looped em.. This is obviously really rough and unfinished but I'm hoping to go further with it. I'm going to keep pushing a long :) Have any of you guys ever tried hand drawn animation [or any type of animation] before?

Graphics Requests/Archive / [Solved] Quick way to recolor?
« on: April 07, 2010, 11:18:07 pm »
I seriously recolor sprites like nine times before I decide how I want the palette to be. So.. a lot of my time is spent doing that. Are there any quick ways to recolor things? Like say select a single color and tell a program to change it to another? I use MS Paint to tile/sprite.

<<<Me right now.

Graphics / Updated: East, South and North Clock Town Complete
« on: April 01, 2010, 04:31:06 am »

EDIT: Soooo East Clock Town is pretty much finished.. Maybe some tweaking here and there. I went pretty crazy with the colors for East and intend to do the same for West. I like how it came out for the most part. Comments and suggestions appreciated. :) There may be a few tiling errors, I had to pull all these together pretty quickly.

------------

EDIT: Just a small update. .. I'm not a good spriter. I like tiling, but I really could use some work when it comes to spriting.. This took me way too long and went through about six different types of wood. But anyway, this is what I've come up with for the Treasure Shop. The entrance will be in South Clock Town now rather than East.. because it's not possible otherwise :P

I'm working on East Clock Town now. I changed the brick floor tiles for South Clock Town to horizontal and I like it a lot more. So thanks Master Yoshi. :) I also made the awnings even. I'm not sure if I'm adding the flags, yet. And I like the color scheme for each place separately, still.. So I'm going to wait to make North Clock Town more cohesive overall until East and West are done. No plan for that yet. Thanks for the comments. :)

------------

EDIT: So, I added South Clock Town. Most of it is done.. I haven't convinced myself if I would actually leave the flags in if this were a real fangame. Not that that would ever happen hahah. The other thing that's really bugging me is the stairs to Laundry Pool. I'm trying to stay as close to GB as I can, and then just amp it up a bit. The stairs really shouldn't be going down.. We'll see. I haven't tried to do the ginormous treasure chest yet, I may work on it now. I also kind of feel like the area with the wood is a bit plain. Don't really know what I could do, though. AND I don't know how I feel about this color scheme in conjunction with North Clock Town. It just feels dull for Clock Town, you know? I haven't figured out a way to get patterns on the wall, either. Lots of I don't knows. But.. there it is laid out, anyway. Let me know what you guys think.

------------
I was bored tonight. :P
Feel free not to notice the shoddy balloon.
I wanted to mix up to color scheme to match the feeling you get when running through Clock Town. I feel like even with good music, the atmosphere is lost when you transition into 2D. So.. I tried to compensate. I already noticed a mistake, though. Haha As soon as I finished, I was taking one final run through North Clock Town in the actual game and I realized that the section with the hole is level with the entrance to the fairy fountain. Link is able to climb the fence. Whoops.

Entertainment / What Will Nintendo Tack on Next?!

Gimmick gimmick gimmick! Everyone loves a gimmick! After the touch screen, voice recognition, dual camera functionality, XL sized screens, and soon to be 3D capabilities, what direction will Nintendo take next?!

Entertainment / Samsung jumps on the 3D / IMAX Fad
« on: March 14, 2010, 02:45:10 am »
Now, in all honesty, I'm not a fan of 3D movies. I think they're blurry, I feel like my eyes are crossed, they're generally tacked on at the end so the movie makes more money and the shades you have to wear make everything darker. So, you can imagine how discouraged I was after reading this article. Samsung is is releasing a line of 3D capable televisions later this year. Now, there obviously aren't any 3D programs being broadcast, so until that happens, they're selling these TV's with 3D movies as a buffer. Honestly, I sort of feel like they're the "360" as far as TV's go. They're taking something that isn't fully developed and releasing a product way too early. Plus... I think 3D is a gimmick. :P What do you guys think?

Graphics / Test My [Partial] Website!
« on: March 13, 2010, 05:16:32 am »
DISCLAIMER: I know a bit about coding, but I'm no master. If and when you download this, don't laugh at my HTML file if it looks stupid. ;)

So I've been working on my website for the past few days and I've finished the first page. I've tested it in Firefox, IE, Safari, Chrome and Netscape and it seems to be fine. But, I'd like to ask you guys how it runs on your computers.

Also, if anyone knows anything about javascript, you should answer my question! :P I didn't write the java code, and I don't know anything about it. I've only edited parts of it to make the scrolling box sit in the right place. My problem is that if you scroll all the way to the end, unclick the scroll bar and reclick it and start dragging it over, the page stretches past where it's set to go. Sooooo... if anyone has a remedy, lemme know.  8)

Here is the download. Just unzip it, drag the "HTML" folder onto your desktop and open up "index.html" in your browser of choice. :) Lemme know how it goes!

http://www.zshare.net/download/736457390d4dfb13/

p.s. "index.html" and "index2.html" are the same thing. It was a test file for the first so I didn't screw it up accidentally lol

p.s.s. What are your views on splash pages? I was thinking about adding one.

EDIT:
Apparently that one didn't work? :o Try this link. "index.html" is a splash page, so you can open that first.

Probably one of the most accurate articles that parallels my own feelings I've read on the Wii. Good stuff :P

How does everyone here feel about the Wii now that it's been out for so long?

Graphics / Newwwww Pictures!
« on: October 27, 2009, 07:39:59 pm »
So this past Sunday I planned a shoot with a few of my friends. Luckily enough my cousin is a makeup artist and we're helping each other out with our portfolio now or else I don't think I would have gotten these results. I sketched what I wanted the girls to look like and she plastered their faces with makeup haha. I'm pretty happy with the photos so far. I had four models and took over 300 pictures after an eight hour shoot. It was insane. :P I'm still editing down the selection, but these are the first photos of one of my favorite models. I'll update the topic as I edit the photos. Let me know what you guys think! I've still got to check colors on another monitor because mine has been pretty off recently. But oh well. :P

Entertainment / Where the Wild Things Are!
« on: October 22, 2009, 10:24:46 pm »
Has anyone seen it yet?
I was really surprised when I left the theater. I don't know what I was expecting but that definitely wasn't it. I think it was far too scary for child and the majority of the movies ideas would have went over their heads. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it. The cinematography was really nice to look at and there was an overall consistency that I loved. I also liked how Max's life was echoed through the main monster [who's name I forget] and how he recognized his owns faults from witnessing them in others. There was a lot of subtleties sprinkled throughout the movie that were pretty deep and I just really enjoyed it.

I was reading a review on the movie and I never knew that there were originally supposed to be three books released [I don't know if they ever were or not] and that they were meant to teach children about emotion. Where the Wild Things Are focuses on anger, obviously, and it was cool to see that in the movie they examined several different types of anger and the effects it has on a community.

What did you guys thinkkkkk?

Entertainment / Zelda has flat-lined.
« on: September 20, 2009, 06:48:29 pm »
For a while now, I haven't really been playing Zelda games, aside from older ones. I feel like all of the originality has been sucked out of the series and they're mainly just releasing games for money, similarly to what's happened with Mario. Along with this whole "Wii phenomenon" which is completely TRASHING the gaming community, originality has been set aside and exchanged for casualty and ease. Near everything produced by Nintendo recently that I've seen is made to cater to the casual gamer whether it's for the DS or Wii. Even art direction and creativity has been thrown out the window.

Getting back on topic, the last Zelda game I truly enjoyed was Windwaker. It was a breath of fresh air the to franchise which has since been missing. Minishcap, Four Swords, Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland, Phantom Hourglass and now Spirit Tracks have stolen the style born from that game and have compensated with only decent gameplay. Since Windwaker, I haven't beaten any Zelda game. I attribute this partly to the fact that my time for game play has been increasingly limited as I get older, but mostly because I've been so disappointed with what has come out that I have no desire to play.

Twilight Princess is no exception. I understand that it was one of the premiere titles for the Wii, despite being a Gamecube exclusive title [I'm not still bitter], but just because it uses motion like the hundreds of games to follow [and before it - HELLO virtual reality in the 80's!] doesn't make it revolutionary. Twilight Princess has a nice atmosphere, yes, but it's one we've seen before. With the facelift graphics-wise, Nintendo must have thought it wise to copy everything they did with Ocarina of Time, it being their most successful game. Gameplay, battling, characters - it's all the same. I feel like I've seen pieces of Twilight's Hyrule in dozens of games.

That all being said, I'll finish by saying what I could have started and ended the topic with. Sadly, I've completely lost all faith in the Zelda franchise.

Entertainment / Dissidia *thumbs down*
« on: September 20, 2009, 06:02:18 pm »
I mean... I haven't REALLY gotten into it yet. I've only beaten two of the stories, but I'm really not into it so far. I feel like, in terms of storyline, it's a worse version of Kingdom Hearts. I love Kingdom Hearts and all, but they basically killed all of the Disney stories. Dissidia also has a slew of really cheesey dialogue and not so hot voice acting to accompany it. The battle system is pretty cool. I feel like I'll like it a whole lot more once I completely grasp everything you can do with the summons and abilities and all. I just feel that on a whole, the game missed the mark. Anyone else played this yet?

I've been working on a website for my uncle. I have a test up now on a spare domain he's purchased so there's a "godaddy" logo on top. Once it's finalized, that will be gone. The text and whatnot is all subject to change. I took all of the product photos that are on the site as well. They may be switched out, too. Not sure yet. But as of now, this is what I have. Let me know what you think!
