Discussion / Hidden *.RAR Archives
« on: May 20, 2008, 09:10:23 pm »
Hello everyone, long time no see...again.  I come bearing not a sacred ocarina, but the fruits of my labor, that being my discovery of the joys of the command prompt!  I've just made something rather cool.  I programed a little batch file (like a command shortcut if you didn't know) that will store the contents of a folder into a Winrar archive, then hide that archive inside a viewable, editable picture!  This way if you've got some kind of files you want to hide from prying eyes, this is a way to make it hidden without being verry noticeable (it'll have a higher than normal file size though).

First things first, you're going to need the program Winrar.  Winrar, as most of you should know, is a compression tool much like Winzip or 7Zip.  Find it on Google and install it if you don't have it.  REMEMBER THE INSTALL PATH!  If you installed it into
Code: [Select]
C:\program files\Winrar\than that's easy.  just make sure you write it down.  Alright, next we need to create a few folders.  I'm going to put it into the Z:\ drive.  My new folder will be called "Copier."  Inside this folder, we need to create two more folders.  I'm going to call them "Files" and "Image."  So now we have these three folders:
Code: [Select]
Z:\Copier
Z:\Copier\Files
Z:\Copier\Image
Anyway
In the "Copier" folder, right-click somewhere and create a new text document called "Copier.bat"  Congratulations!  You just created your first batch file!  If you like, you can make a "Hello World test by copying and pasteing the following code into the text editor (right-click and click edit)
Code: [Select]
@echo off
Echo Hello World!
Pause

So, once you've done the "My first bit of code dance" (or if you've used the command prompt before and don't want to act like a newb), delete the code from the text editor, and put in what I have.  I'm going to explain it line by line by using comments (don't put the comments into the batch file!):

Code: [Select]
@echo off                                                  //makes the screen legible, but not needed
set path="C:\Program Files\winrar\";%path%                 //Imports commands from Winrar
rar a Z:\Copier\Backup.rar Z:\Copier\Files\                //creates a new Rar archive with the "Files" folder
echo Mergeing files...                                     //Prints text to the screen.  Not needed
copy /b Z:\Copier\Image\ + Backup.rar Hidden_Backup.png    //The magic code, copies two files (the picture in the image folder and backup.rar) into one new one (Hidden_backup.png)
echo Done                                                  //Prints text to the screen.  Not needed
echo Deleteing file Backup.rar                             //Prints text to the screen.  Not needed
del Z:\Copier\Backup.rar                                   //delete the old rar archive
echo Done                                                  //Prints text to the screen.  Not needed
pause                                                      //wait for user input to close window

Now, place the files you like to hide into the "Files" folder, an inconspicuous image in the "Image" folder, and run the batch file!  If everything worked properly, you'll see a new file entitled "Hidden_Backup.png".  Double click the new image, and it'll open in an image editing program, but if you right-click it and select open With and choose Winrar, you gain access to the hidden files!  You can use any picture file type, but just be sure to change the new file's type in the batch file.

There ya go!  But remember, as with anything regarding the command prompt, use it responsibly, it's a great and powerful tool

BTW: I wasn't sure how to put something like this in the new gallery format, so that's why I put it here...

Coding / Animating a section of sub-images within one sprite [GM]
« on: November 10, 2007, 05:38:38 am »
well, I needed this for something a while back, and thought it might be useful to someone.  For those of you out there who don't want lots of different sprites for your running animations, you can put all of the frames of that .gif file into one sprite in GM (works in 6 and below, not sure about 7 yet, though it probably does) and then loop just a section of those subimages rather simply.  First, you'll need a script kind of like this one (I've named it "scr_anim_within(start,tot,time)"):
Code: [Select]
start=argument0;
tot=argument1
time=argument2;
if((self.image_index>=(start))&&(self.image_index<(start+tot-1)))  //if the image_index is >= to the starting subimage and < the last
{
     self.image_speed=time;   //this starts the animation
}
else
{
     self.image_index=start;   //sets the animation back to the begining
}
start being the first subimage in your animation, tot being the number of subimages in your animation, and time is how fast you want it to loop.

Also, make sure that the sprite that contains all of the animations has them arranged in a way like this: down, right, up, left.  this just makes it easier.

Now, in your player object, you're going to want a variable that holds what direction you are going.  It's best to assign it a numeric value for the sake of easier mathematics.  I named mine, "dir", simple enough?  it can equal 0, 1, 2, or 3.  0=down, 1=right, 2=up, and 3=left.  In the "End Step" event, put some code like this (I've commented bits of it so it's easier to understand):

Code: [Select]
switch(state)      //the variable that holds whether or not I'm moving
{
    case(0):                               //if I am standing
         sprite_index=spr_plr_stand;
         image_index=dir;
         image_speed=0;
    break;
    case(1):                               //if I am moving
         sprite_index=spr_plr_run;
         scr_anim_within(8*dir,8,1/3);
    break;
}

ok, so the place where it says: scr_anim_within(8*dir,8,1/3) is a little confuseing.  See, my sprite has 8 subimages per animation.  By useing the dir variable, it can go to the start of any animation cleanly.  Example:  If dir=0 (If I'm facing down), it will start the animation at subimage 0, and run on until subimage 7, then loop.  However, if dir=1 (I'm facing right), the the animation will start at subimage 8 and run until subimage 15.

the other sprite I have is a seperate one for the standing frames (which have no animation).  I just set it up similarly to the one with the animations so that all I need to do is set the image_index to dir.

Now, I'm sure there are better ways to do this (I haven't used GM in a while), but this works for me just fine.  Hope it helps some of you guys out a bit.  It's quite useful for keeping the number of sprites down to a minimum.

Other Discussion / Running DX10 on Windows XP?
« on: October 02, 2007, 01:30:46 am »
Now, the bigwigs at MS say that it's impossible, requiring you to upgrade expensively to Vista for what is essentially an XP upgrade.  Nonsense!  There must be a way to run Direct X 10 on XP!  Seriously, does anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

In my search, anyway, I came across this gem:  http://www.fallingleafsystems.com/

I'm going to try and see if it's anything useful, but I want a discusson.  What do you guys think about it?

The only sucky thing is that I messed up my alloted time (this was a project), so the end of it is going to be rushed, sloppily edited, and only have one channel of audio, but that being said, I think it's pretty damn good.  This is only the trailer though, so, you'll have to wait a few days for me to finish editing the final product.

Discussion / OoT: Morrowind
« on: January 16, 2007, 10:09:27 pm »
Well, I was messing around in The Elderscrolls Construction set (that comes with the game of the year edition of TES III: Morrowind) and I realized that with this incredibly open-ended software, it would be completely possible to create a remake of Ocarina of Time.  I began thinking that it would be quite a cool project.  Custom textures and models would probably be the hardest part about it, and for those, I could probably either just use some from the High Resolution texture repack and maybe some spruced up models from OoT itself, or just use the standard Morrowind textures and models.  It would defiantly be a worthwhile, though difficult project.  Anyone think it would be a cool idea?

Does anyone have the font Trajan Pro and/or Trajan Pro Bold on their computer, and if so, would you be willing to send me the .tff file?  I need the specific font for a project I'm working on, and is would be quite appreciative if someone could help me out here.  Thanks.

Entertainment / Vinyls are cool
« on: January 06, 2007, 10:33:23 pm »
I just found a huge collection of old vinyls in our basement, and let me tell you there is some cool stuff in here.  Example, a 4 disc collection the The Who entitled "Hooligans" which to my knowledge isn't on CD (maybe I'm wrong though), Led Zeppelin 2, a bunch of Genesis, Boston and Kansas, Micheal Jackson's Thriller ( :P ) and quite a bit of Pink Floyd.  I found Wish you Were Here, Animals, a Momentary lapse in Reason, but the cream of the crop, The Wall!  Must say, one of the coolest in the collection (DSOTM was absent though  :( ), so I took some pictures.

Gotta say that Records are in fact much better quality than CDs or digital.  It just sounds better, and I played both against each other.  If you don't have a record player in your house, go get one, now  :P

The U.S. Patent for the Dualshock controller, dated December 14, 1999. Includes gyroscopic sensors fanboys.  That's right, Sony was well within their rights to make a controller that senses movement, not ripping off Nintendo.  If anything, Nintendo riped off Sony (legally).  End the argument, plz.

Debates / Saddam Is Dead
« on: January 02, 2007, 02:04:16 am »
Now that Saddam Hussein is dead by hanging, what do you think the repercussions are going to be in Iraq, if any?
Did he recieve fair justice, or was the court unbalanced?  What will happen to the troops still over there, will the "war's" course change for the better/worse?  What are your opinions of this subject?

Mod Edit- I'm sorry Bearer but I gotta remove the video link from your post. We were having a mod discussion about the topic of Saddam and Andrew just doesn't want videos/pictures dealing with the subject posted since the may be disturbing to some people and we just don't want to cause any sort of chaos with it. Discussion is fine, just he doesn't want images and videos displayed or linked to.

Entertainment / Leisure Suit Larry to come to the Wii
« on: December 23, 2006, 05:39:54 pm »
http://www.bbspot.com/News/2006/12/leisure-suit-larry-wii.html

Dear god, what has video gaming come to  ;D?
I swear, I must have been laughing for 10 minutes straight after I heard about this.

Quote from: Article
in the new release, "Leisure Suit Larry: Upstanding Citizen," the Wiimote will be placed into a strap-on harness for a whole new angle on the game. Now you won't only have to get the women to agree to a little bump-and-tickle, you will also have to please them enough that they don't lose interest.

With the Wiimote strapped firmly on your hips, you must thrust and gyrate in a "pleasing" manner. For the sexually inept, your conquest just may fail and she will fall asleep, turn the TV on or just get up and leave. Those that you satisfy will earn you libido points and help you as you go along. But enough bad reviews and the girls will be laughing and pointing at you as you walk by...

hahaha, I wonder what the Wiimote attachment will look like  ;D

I was looking on youtube and I found this awesome video of a rehershall Pink Floyd had before live 8 of them playing the song Wish You Were Here.  I don't know, I thought it was a cool video.

"Wish You Were Here"

Of course, that being said, now that Syd Barrett has passed away, I've heard alot of rumors on the internet and radio about a possible reunion concert in his benefit.  93.3 WMMR in philladelphia commented on it, as well as 94.1 WYSP (to my knowledge).  Also, Roger Waters has been quoted saying that him and David Gilmour are on friendly terms again, so, maybe the rumors aren't entirely BS?

For all of you floydian fans out there, what are your views on a reunion of these legends, possible or not?  I mean, pigs flew at Live 8 and they can do it again, right?

I finaly buckled down and got componant cables for me old cube.  I had to get them off EBay for $45, but it was well worth it.  My games are revitalized in 480p!  This a shame that the ol'cube does not support 1080i, cause my TV's so big, I can see some of the scan lines if I look hard enough  ;)
That being said, I see a huge difference in quality.  If you're not getting the Wii, I HIGHLY recomend looking for these cables (if your cube is one of the old models that is).

I'll get pics up soonish...

Entertainment / My Published Short Story: "The Epilogue"
« on: November 29, 2006, 03:37:54 am »
Woot!  I finally got it published...at the high school level!
My school operates a literary magazine every few months, and my previous English teacher is running it.  After all the entries are collected, it's sent off to a publisher, and we get a few hundred copies made (you can only get them at our school though).  In anycase, my now totally finished short story, The Epilogue (ranking in at about 7 pages and 4 chapters) is one of the featured works.  I could have written a full length novel if I wanted to, but my goal was to have something short enough to actually fit withen our page limits.  I welcome any constructive criticism, self improvement.  My grammer isn't the best in the world (especially in the last few paragraphs), but I think you'll enjoy it.  Without further ado, here it is.
btw, plagerism is a crime

Chapter I
In the embrace of the night, the full moon shone down brilliantly through the cloudless sky.  Unobstructed by anything in the heavens, its soft light fell down upon the sleeping city of Chicago.   The streets, however, were darkened by the lofty buildings, looming ominously overhead like sentries.  A stray dog ran across the shadowed street, barking at some ghost of a figure, and barely dodged the head lights of a truck in the process.  The screech of break pads followed by a horn and the echoing bark faded into the distance, and the city became quiet again.  In truth, nothing ever slept n this city: be it a dog or a man, something was awake.  That was why he was up late that night, or so he liked to believe anyway.
Under a streetlight and leaning on the chain-link fence in front of an old warehouse smoking a cigarette was a man by the name of Arthur Dinnocenti.  The smoke swirled around him with a light breeze, eddying about his long nose, and under the sunken, but keen, green eyes that looked as though they had been hewn from a chunk of emerald.  His face was rough with the stubble of many late nights, like this one, when he was on the job.  He was also an Italian immigrant from Sicily, which didn???t exactly make him ???out of place??? in this city, but this fact was sometimes more of a bother to Arthur than a relief.  He stood there, under that street light, in a long brown trench coat.  He was an imposing figure, much like a modern Sherlock Holmes, only without a faithful Watson to back him up.
He was reading yesterday???s issue of the Tribune, the Headlines running rampant with titles like, prohibition and murder, greed, and crime.
???The Roaring 20???s I guess?????? he thought sarcastically to himself as he turned the page, taking a lengthy draw on his cig.  That night was like many others for our hero, only it was much later.  The last time Arthur checked his watch, the small face read 11:45 PM.  He looked down again, this time reading 12:06 AM, and it still wasn???t time yet.  He sighed, thinking heavily about what happened that led up to tonight.  So many headaches, but he didn???t have the relief.  One thing after another, boom, boom, boom, they all came crashing down around him: the divorce, the death, the jury, the gun, the death, the betrayal, the police, the death, and the Mafia, not to mention the death.  The thing that started it all and what kept it going still, only adding fuel to the fire that was his tragic sing-song story of a life.
Arthur took another long drag on his cig, the faint embers glowing brightly against the dark city backdrop, only to fade out again in another puff of smoke and a deep exhale.  It wasn???t a normal a thing for Arthur, or Att as he was sometimes known (which is quite a long story indeed), to be anxious, but there was something about tonight that had him on edge.  He shuffled his feet, and then threw the paper into a nearby trash bin.  He looked down at his watch once more: 12:20 AM.   He looked about nervously, thoughts racing in and out of his head like bees, buzzing with commotion.  You see, Att was in the Mafia.  At first, he started out slow, helping the lower members from time to time with things like with avoiding the law during illicit alcohol transports, but when the Don started noticing him, he was hired to work at a local speakeasy.  Now, he was riding the underground alcohol trade like a train, and he wasn???t about to get off at any station.  Then again, from time to time, trains got de-railed.  He shuddered at that disturbing reflection, and then looked back down at his watch.  It was time.  He was supposed to meet with some of the higher ups in the gang tonight.  He wasn???t quite sure why, but nightly assignments weren???t an uncommon thing, so maybe he was being put on another delivery.  ???But at this hour???? he thought.  Something was definitely fishy, but he put it in the back of his head.
The name of the man he was supposed to be meeting was James Mac??o: a cold and ruthless man that would no sooner shake your hand than shoot you and your family in the face with a laugh.  Att knew this all too well, as it would turn out.  He sighed again, and took one last puff on his cigarette before dropping it on the ground and stomping it out; its ashes crumpled and dried upon the cracked sidewalk.  He turned towards the abandoned warehouse, and neatly hoped the fence, the weight of a cold metal precaution in his inner pocket hitting against his chest as his feet touched the ground.  Landing with a cat-like grace, he started walking coolly towards the building, a small swagger in his step.  The crisp night air flowed through his veins and with it a sort of energy that crackled around him despite his tiredness; his mindset was solid as a rock, save for the tiny pebble of doubt that kept him worried.  You see, Arthur Dinnocenti was more like Sherlock Holmes than one would imagine.  For one thing, aside from being in the Mafia, he was also a cop.  And so, under the shining light of the full moon, Arthur Dinnocenti walked towards the abandoned warehouse.

Chapter II
Crash!  And the vase hit the wall, the pieces falling, shattering, to the ground. Having thrown it at Arthur, Kate stood yelling again since she had missed.  It was two months prior to that night under the streetlight, but Arthur Dinnocenti wasn???t much better off.  For one thing, he was crouched over, dodging flying vases, in a corner of their house???s living room, which was covered with an assortment of everything that had once been his.  There was yelling, and anger, and sadness in her voice; a voice that was once beautiful and sweet, but now filled with distress.  Her formerly flowing, silky brown hair was now messy and split into ends with grief.  Tears streamed down her face, all the while sobbing with short gasping breaths.  It was all because of what happened, and Arthur???s involvement.  It was a shame I guess, that he couldn???t tell her the truth.  If he did, she would probably get killed too.  It was better that she be alive and hating him then her dead, right?  At least he could save one person he cared about, or so he liked to believe anyway.  In any case, she hated him now with the same tear-streaked light blue eyes that had once looked up at him under the church bells of St. Peter; bound by a ring that was now laid at Arthur???s feet, lying on the dust covered floor.
???You???don???t???understand!  You???you murderer!???  She gasped out, hunched over crying, and groping for another thing to throw at her husband.  She found the cat.  ???It???s all your fault!???
???I didn???t do anything!???  He yelled back, hoping to make reason with the insane beast of a woman in front of him as he jumped and caught their black and grey tabby cat in mid-air.
???That???s just it!??? She retorted furiously between breaths, picking up a small wine glass, ???You???you could have???sa???saved her, Att!  Why didn???t you?  You might as well have???have???held the god-damned gun to her head!???
???I couldn???t do anything!  If I had, I???d be dead too!??? he said in another vain attempt at reason, dodging the half empty glass.  The cat mewed and scratched at his arms, distressed at its uncomfortable position.
???Well maybe you should be!??? and then there was silence.  Arthur put the cat on the ground, and it seemed to stare at Kate with what even looked like contempt for a minute, before walking off in indignity, its fur in ruffles.  A few loose papers floated to the ground in the stillness, and the silence wasn???t lost on anyone present.  The cold response hit home for Arthur, only then realizing how much the comment did.  He looked down at his feet, the ring catching his eye.  His wife???s face changed from that of anger to something resembling remorse, the icy shame of her anger finally sinking in.
???Arthur?????? she started.
???No??????  He said, ???Maybe you???re right??????  Normally, he might have taken satisfaction in her shock at this statement, but it was lost on him, as was most of the rest of their conversation.  She left him that day, leaving the ring on the floor, which was covered with the dust and broken pieces of Arthur???s former possessions.  He bent down to pick it up later and kneeled looking at it.  He started crying, but it was only for a second; a slight momentary lapse in his mentality, nothing more, but nothing less.  He rose back up and walked out into his kitchen, the fridge open with food spilling out into the war zone of a floor.  He slammed his face down on the wooden counter and into his arms, thinking about how any of this could have ever happened.
The truth was, he had tried to stop her death, but James wouldn???t listen; he always followed orders.  If he had been ordered to slit his own mother???s throat, he probably would if he was paid enough.
???But even he had morals, right???? Arthur thought to himself.  It didn???t matter though, any of it.  Maybe Arthur was better off dead.  Then he looked up from the counter, his eyes resting on an old photograph from a few years ago.  Kate was normally a level headed, funny girl who knew nearly every one of Arthur???s odd little quirks.  She practically knew him better than he did, or something along the lines of that old clich??.  She was never quick to anger, but that was before the death of her sister, who was in the photograph just after her graduation at the police academy.
She had been killed by James Mac??o because she led the raid on one of their alcohol warehouses last night.  Arthur was there, as was James, and he was assigned to stop it, and he did, in fact, try to stop it.  He tried.  Her screaming his name in pleas of help had gotten to him.  James wouldn???t listen though; he was dead to emotion, so he pulled the trigger.  It was infuriating that Arthur actually worked for him or at least in an elaborate guise anyway.  He was just glad that James hadn???t made him do it that night, or else Kate really would have hated him.  Arthur was still mad, but why shouldn???t he be?  He hated James with a fire that burned in his soul, and in his very being, but he had to keep his anger quieted; working as an undercover cop had many risks, and he couldn???t afford to be caught now, which is also why he couldn???t tell any of this to Kate.  If she knew, well, it was best not to think about it.  Arthur couldn???t get revenge anyway, because trying to kill James would have been hard from any angle.  He was a cold man, made that way through years of killing others and abusing his power.
There was one thing Arthur could do in light of these current events.  He looked at his watch, 8:00 PM.  The bar only closed at 9, so there was time for a quick drink.  Quick drink?  Hell, who was he kidding, Arthur needed to get stone drunk, and that???s what he intended to do as he grabbed his coat, and put the discarded ring in his pocket. He gathered up his wits, and left his house, walking down to Ken???s Pub, which was four blocks away.
Ken McArdle was an old friend from way back, before he even joined the force.  They first met on the same ship headed for America.  It was a funny story, but we???re pressed for time, so I???ll have to spare you.  It was a rather odd moment for Arthur, once, when he had to deliver an alcohol shipment to his bar.  Ken knew his secret, but he wouldn???t dare tell anyone.  Arthur was a cop after all, and Ken could easily be arrested for selling beer.  Then again, he did have quite a few friends in high places who visited his pub regularly. He was also Irish, which made their friendship odd, considering Arthur was an Italian.
An hour later (for Att had taken the long way ???round), Ken was closing up shop, when he saw Arthur swagger up with dark circles under his eyes and a hunch in his back.  Ken looked at him, and said in a light Irish accent,
???Att!  Ya look like hell lad!  Come inside, and have a drink, for Christ ???sake!???  Which Arthur obliged to happily.  Ken was another person who seemed to know Arthur better than he did himself; there were a lot of them these days.

« on: November 27, 2006, 02:45:07 am »
The way I have my movement engine set up is that rather than having 4 separate sprites for my different directions, I have 1 sprite that holds the animations (in my debugging example, I have 3 subimages per animation, resulting in 12 total subimages [0-11]) and through code, I check the frames of the animation against a facing variable (that can be 0, 1, 2, or 3) multiplied by the number of subimages in the animation (in This case 3).  here is the code to give you a better idea:
Code: [Select]
sprite_index=spr_run;
if (image_index < (2 + facing * 3) && image_index >= facing * 3)
{
      image_index+=1;
}
else
{
      image_index=facing*3;
}
I was just wondering if this, combined with externally loading the sprite would be more efficient that having 4 separate sprites do the job.

Well, I just finished Majora's Mask again, and it inspired me to take a crack at spiriting again.  behold, Oni (Fierce Deity) Link in my own style.  Don't be expecting a sheet or anything though...

White Background; 100%

Transparent Background; 100%

Transparent Background; 600%

I like it, but then again I'm not nearly the best spriter here, so C+C

[EDIT]:
    Just noticed the arms are too straight, meses up the perspective >.<  Fixed it:

Better?

[Edit]:
     Made it all around lighter, and I do like it.

Entertainment / [request] Gamecube Component Cables
« on: November 05, 2006, 05:51:15 pm »
Well, I have decided that I'll be getting the new Zelda Game for the Gamecube rather than the Wii (I greatly prefer the controller than the Wiimote for Zelda gameplay), so, I would really like to get some component cables for my system.  You see, I have one of the older Gamecube models that still supports 480p (it has a component out port on the back) and I would like to make use of it.  However, I have found that Nintendo charges an insane amount of money for these (plus $50.00 in most cases), so I ask you ZFGCers that if you happen to come across these cables for a reasonable price, please alert me.  Be it EBay, or some weird on line store, be on the lookout, I've been looking everywhere for these things.  this is a picture of what I'm looking for:

I'd rather not pay the full $50 bucks for them, but they are a rare item as I've found out...  Oh well...
