Title: Playstation 4
Post by: Kleaver on February 21, 2013, 08:31:06 pm
Whatya think of the press conference and the games/features?
I'm not a Sony fan, but it looked pretty neat. Just makes me more excited to see what Microsoft comes up with to be honest.

looked like the controller got an improvement, and the console has some more power. i think microsoft can top it, but at the same time, prolly not. either way, so far, nintendo looks to have gone next-gen more so than sony. any news on when microsoft shows theirs off?

Sounded pretty damn good actually.
Here's hoping what's been said actually materializes well.
But as for games themselves, while looking pretty damn nice (although, god knows what games we actually properly play end up being like), it does seem sort of boring, where it's just the same thing, but prettier, even though this should be the start of a new generation. But yeah, it's only the first glimpse I guess.
God knows how much it's going to cost customers and sony themselves though :x
Surprising that they went all out with power again, something that didn't seem to help the PS3 (or the vita?), or... not surprising because it is sony who made the ps3 after all?

No idea about microsoft, but this year's E3 should be grand.

Also, for anyone that watched the conference, this is great: http://youtu.be/0rJDn0jRnUQ

There's no way that the PS4 could run games created for use on a cell processor-based system. The x86 and the cell just have different architecture. Not to mention the x86 was a necessary sin, seeing as the cell processor was so hard to develop for.

Ehh, this doesn't impress me.  Most high-end GPUs today are capable of twice that number of floating point ops.

Actually the TFLOPS isn't very useful, how fast is the pipeline? What's the fillrate? that's the important stuff.

Not backward compatible? LOL. What the hell are they thinking?

I actually think this makes sense. The CPU architecture of the PS4 compared to the PS3 is most likely quite different. The PS4 CPU is a standard 8-core computer CPU vs. the crazy PS3 architecture that I don't remember quite off the top of my head. It was pretty hardcore in the PS3. Pretty sure that's what attunes to no backwards compatibility.

They'd have to literally host the PS3 hardware alongside the PS4 hardware in order to achieve backwards compatibility. The processing power to emulate the Cell just doesn't exist quite yet. The graphics calls could be hooked and emulated via HLE(high level emulation), but besides that.. yeah. Good luck. The Cell was a complex ass architecture too, as Ash noted.

XFD so TFlops is a real power measuremeant, and i thought people were just joking around.

I guess the dumbass Wii U 1 GB download to play Wii games isn't so bad if the ps4 doesn't even have BC haha.

Not a killzone fan, but i liked the way the killzone game looked, had climbing and !@#$%.

I'm interested in the new FF game they will show off at E3 BE TURN BASED

The only part I like about Killzone is the fact it has a rare, Dutch developer. Though that little gameplay clip looked pretty damn pretty at the start. Of course, it just resorted to pointless shooting way too soon.

Tera floating-point operations per second (or 10^12 floating point operations per second).  !@#$% you we are not!
