What scrolling shooter franchises do you think or know is the best? I'll say Gradius, R-Type, Raiden, Ikaruga, and don't know what else.

Gradius
R-Type
Raiden
Ikaruga

I don't care. Vertical is good (Galaga, Galaxian) but the worst translated game ever is a horizontal shooter (Zero Wing).

Super Stardust HD for PSN is a really cool shooter. That's vertical and horizontal movement around a spherical planet.

*insert millions of people complaining about my next line*

I prefer depth scrolling shooters; IE ones that scroll along the Z axis like Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon :P

(Sorry, but I do not consider those rail shooters <_< that's a dumb thing to call them. They're the same as scrolling shooters, they just move along the Z axis instead of the X or Y)

Out of Horizontal/Vertical... I prefer Horizontal, like Scrambled Valkyrie, and RType

THIS!  IF YOU HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED UN SQUADRON THEN WATCH THE VIDEO.

Yeah this video is more about the music of UN Squadron but that's okay.  The music is kickass too.

Super Stardust is a !@#$% amazing game-- but it isn't considered a scrolling shooter.  That's more of a geometry-wars style shooter.

Seriously though SSHD is one of the best downloadable games ever.  I highly recommend it.

Vertical is annoying. They allow for more freedom of movement, but they usually aren't that good for controlling and fighting and whatnot.
