Graphics / Re: ZFGC Style Development
« on: April 03, 2010, 09:46:27 am »
I know I don't really have anything to say about this after 3 year, but I felt that something should be said about all of this just to clear things up.

Through my non-active years I sometimes come here to check up on thing. I still have a big soft spot in my heart for anything Zelda. In those years almost nobody posted new stuff to the ZFGC-style topic. But every time I saw those original mock-ups from .TakaM, I couldn't resist spriting some more. So after all these years I have about lots of designs and wip sprites laying around gathering dust. Until reality sinked in...

There's just now way this can ever be finished. Creating a new style is impossible with so many different people. Everyone has different tastes, thus making it hard to finish anything.
The quality standard that was set by .TakaM and what I tried to keep is quite high, no offence to anyone, but there are only a fistful of users here I thought capable of producing more assets.

As much as I hate to say this (for I still would love to work on this), I think we should let this die. Though if you choose to continue, just know that I'll be watching from afar.

Cheers to you all,
  Broken Arrow

The Moblin is a good idea, but I'm not sure about the style maybe I'll put some z1 and ww designs together.
The Deku Tree is a bit to specific for now, mostly because I prefer to see original games instead of remakes. But I'll keep it in mind for later.

I disagree with the size being to big.
I just thought it would be awesome to fight bigger enemies. Beside new style, new designs
plus, the "like like" should be able to "eat link" :p (or his shield, or his rupees)

Graphics / ZFGC style ideas & design topic
« on: November 07, 2007, 09:39:18 am »
The concept is simple, post your ideas and design concepts here (maybe with some quick sketches).
I will choose 4 at a time and pixel those for ZFGC style.

Since most people say the want to help, but can't pixel ZFGC style, I figured this would be the next best thing.

note: please keep the designs simple, don't post things like "cool, pixel a giant forest temple with big trees and stuff". Be precise give details and most of all, be creative.

ThnX and greetz,
   Broken Arrow

Stuff being pixeled:
1 - Moblin;
2 - nothing yet;
3 - nothing yet;
4 - nothing yet;

you thought zfgc style was using mc style?
...what the !@#$%?

I think he means that they where using Minish Cap style for the ZFGC community project instead of ZFGCstyle :p

But just to let you know, ZFGCstyle is not dead yet, it's just very slow.
I hope more people will get interested and contribute when i finish the link sheet, but thats gonna take some time :p and even then we still need some dungeon themed tiles.

I figured, the only way this style is ever going to be finished is by making a small game and just sprite what ever i need, so thats what I'm doing right now. Just a small 1 dungeon zelda game with maybe some mini-games. Maybe then this will finally be finished (or finished enough so more people use ZFGCstyle)

btw, pichuscute, I'll take your advise and make a window and a table-cloth.

Those are all some nice sprites, but it still think its a pity not many contribute some more.
On other news, it been some time since i showed anything, so here:

Some more stuff for inside and i made some monsters :D
some of the monster designs are based upon the magnificent art of Prometheus Spawning Grounds
http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/index.htm not to much i hope... :p

Neojume, your rupees look great
Kevin, your chicken look good,
the only things wrong with it are:
A - its to big compared to link
B - to much use of black, try using some more viberant colors.

btw, what do you guys think of the design for the inside of a house????

good to know I'm not the only one still working on ZFGCstyle, i was beginning to feel lonely.

about the sprite:
 - you got the basics down, but you tottaly missed out on the colors, if you try sticking to the original
palette it would probably fit in better.
 - second, i wanna say that since were creating a new style, you don't have to be limited to original
   designs

i could resist making one myself:

as you can see, its missing a mouth, but i liked this cleaner version a lot better then the one i made that had a mouth.

All sprites and tiles may not be used for commercial games.
and personally i wouldn't like to see it being used in a non-zelda game, it would just be wrong...

the inside perpective is finally done, it's quite simple but you create really cool stuff

Castle Tiles:

made by me, with .TakaM's approval

p.s. sorry that it took so long, but you try making this while working on an Xbox360 project :p

I spoke to .TakaM about the inside perspective.
He told me what he had in mind, and I'm currently busy pixeling my ass of :p
So I'm working on some inside tiles (castle/dungeon/house)

Please be patient

Inside tiles are done, castle mock-up is on the first page

this is the base, looks simple huh :p

Hmm... Looking at the top of Links cap, I think the top of Talon's head might be a little bit off.  Other than that I think it looks great.

Please remember that there are no solid rules, the top of the NPC heads don't all have to be the same as link's.
but you are right about Talon's, his heads looks a lot rounder in your edit, so will keep yours  ;)

here's a coupe of hay bales I made. personally I like the recolour.
original                                     recolour

If anyone likes them I can make a whole set of farmyard tiles.
To be brutal... that is pretty awful. Did you try putting on the mockup?

@ Blue_chu_jelly: It's a good start, i like the colors, but i think you used the wrong rule set... a bale of hay is an object (like the bushes and pots) its not part of the terrain. So it needs some black lines.

@ Dayjo: Please try and use arguments if you don't like a sprite. This way the creator can see what you think is wrong with it and edit his sprite.

Tried to make a triangle (timpanon?) on the roof

Obsequious Eye is right, the perspective is a bit off, I don't know exactly how to fix it... but,
the light seems to come from the left, so maybe it'll look better if you made he right side of the timpanon darker.
[/quote]

Edit: I looked some more at your pic, and noticed that the lines of the triangle are a bit off

the upper line is your line, the bottom line is mine.

as you can see, your looks a lot more jagged. When pixeling there are some lines you shouldn't use to avoid jaggyness(?) Here's a site that explains it a little:

But how long is this all going to take? It's been four months, and... hey, we have some gorgeous graphics (almost as gorgeous as me!), but... there isn't much. Certainly not enough to work on a game with. Now, don't get me wrong, I understand how long this will take, but... will it work? I mean, it's basically become an uber-realistic system now... *sigh* If I wanted to, I can't use it. I can't sprite on that level, and there isn't enough to edit, so I'm stuck waiting. For each individual item. I mean, the sword and shield hasn't even been done on Link! ;o;

I think this will never be completely finished...
Every fan game has different items, and will need new custom sprites that haven't been made yet.

Look at LttP, even though that style was made 16 years ago, people still make additional sprites.

What I'm gonna try do do is get some basics done, by basics i mean:
    - Link, with sword, shield and some basic animations (running, climbing, pick up, throw, attacking, defending)
    - One Overworld tile set (expanding on .takaM's tilesheet)
    - One Dungeon tile set
    - Basic enemies (5 or less)
    - some NPC's

Thats all I'm gonna try to get done within at least 6 months, because we can't expect ourselves to make a complete set, we're no Nintendo or Capcom.
Once the basics are done, we'll think of whats next.

And you CAN sprite on that level, everyone can, all you need is the ZFGC style guide and some common sense.

ZFGC style guide
http://www2.hku.nl/~roy/zfgc/ZFGCstyleGuide.doc

I must admit that it's not much yet, but this is the main stuff.
If you have any more info you would like to have in the document PM me.
A small character tutorial is in the making.

WoW, now thats what i call a big post,

I edited Devy's well to fit the style:

Hope you like it.

First thing I'm gonna do as head of the ZFGC style, is try to write a document on how to sprite in ZFGC style, it will give a clear definition on what the ZFGC style is.
It won't be actual rules, more like guidelines to creating a ZFGC sprite.
it will also have small spriting tricks for people who want to sprite, but say that the can't.
everyone can sprite, just not everybody knows the basics.

Second, I'm no God, nor am i .takaM, I'm just a 19 year old boy doing the best he can.
Don't expect any miracles :p

So, I'll start writing now, and hopefully get everything up in a few days.

Keep on spriting,
