Take a ruler and let someone  hold it on the top. Place your thumb and index finger around the ru... Too lazy to explain,
i'll just draw a picture... although I already have explained like 90% of the experiment <__<

Unfortunately I'm not a Picasso so I hope this will do <.<

... the person who's holding the ruler has to drop the ruler suddenly, and YOUR
mission is to try to catch the ruler with your fingers as fast as possible! When that's done,
check on the ruler how many inches/cm/lols/hablabla/etc you got (average = 15cm/5.9 inches).
My record is 4 cm. Which according to my classmate is because I play video games (I really don't play video games that much) <___<

When you have done this a couple of times (like 4-5 times), find out what your fastest reaction speed was by using this formula:
t = 2 x s/g ( s = meters (1 meter ~ 39.37 inches), g = the gravitation (~9,81)).

Example:

First try: 6 cm (= 0,06 m = 2.36 inches )
Second try: 7 cm (= 0,07 m = 2.76 inches )
Third try: 4 cm (= 0,04 m = 1.57 inches )
Fourth try: 12 cm (=0,12 m = 4.72 inches )

Speed of my best try: t = 2 x (0,04 / 9,81) = 0.008 sec
Speed of my worst try: t = 2 x (0,12 / 9,81) = 0,024 sec

My average speed value:
[0.06+0.07+.0.04+0.12]/4 = 0.0725 m
t = 2 x (0,0725 / 9,81) = 0.0148 sec

 => Mission completed!  8)

You can convert inches etc to meter here http://www.convertworld.com/en/

Ah, tabby, your formula is wrong.
t = sqrt(2 x s/g)

You must have the sqrt() because the unit of acceleration is m/s², not m/s.

EDIT: Just to make it clear, "sqrt()" is "square root". <.< I guess I'm too used to programming :\

(I'll post my records later though)

Did this in Science once, but using an actual timer and two connections (and a beeper). I got 0.18 seconds! That's a very good reaction time :P

did this in physics last year.  The formula is t = sqrt(2D/g) btw.

Try this with a dollar bill.  Except put your hand half way up the bill.  According to my physics teacher, it's impossible for humans to catch it.  Too bad my friend proved him wrong on that one multiple times XD

Also, if you do it, make sure that you move the decimal place over 2 places to the left for the distance, or else you'll be plugging in centimeters when you need to plug in meters.

I did this in physics about a week ago actually...strange coincidence.

there are online tests where you just need to left click when something changes, which im sure eliminates a lot of human error in this method ^^;

I'd do it if I could figure out all that math jumble you posted.
