You really can't jump into things like this with C++.  You need to create a framework first and have all your components functioning first.

Just to let you guys know, I don't really have a choice. I WILL be making a game in C++ by the end of the academic year. No matter what.

... are they teaching you C++ or are you doing it for the hell of it?

If they're teaching it, let them tell you how they want you to do it as the course progresses. Otherwise you'll get puffed up on "already knowing the material" (even though you don't understand it yet) and end up missing out on the education behind the course.

That's the only way I can see you not having a choice behind the matter. If you're just doing it because you "want to release a C++ game", then you need to buy some books, study them, and then ask questions on here.

They're teaching me it. Though I want to try and get ahead.

Visual Basic?...

I haven't used Allegro at all, is the library choice up to you?

Visual Basic isn't C++, it's an entirely different language.

I would seriously just let the teacher run through it with you. You're going to really screw yourself over by trying to get ahead of yourself without knowing the material

Yet Mammy's advice still applies. Work it out with your teacher or you'll end up learning the wrong things.

Yeah but that doesn't change the fact that you don't want to get ahead of yourself. For the sake of not making you out to look like an ass to your teacher, you better just go through the class like normal :s... This really isn't something you can *get ahead* on without knowing the material extensively beforehand. Gamemaker knowledge doesn't count for this at all, and in fact it's probably already screwed you over a bit for this class. Just let the teacher deprogram you from GM and reprogram you the correct way. There's nothing anyone here can tell you that's going to help you in the class because your teacher is going to have a set of steps for you to follow and learn by.
