"But you play as Raiden, and he's so whiny, and he's so not Solid Snake!"
Only reason I ever see someone hate Metal Gear Solid 2 for.
No.
The reason I disliked MGS2 was because it really was a !@#$%
game. I have nothing against the story (though the 40 minute conversations and bizarre supernatural villains are questionable), and I really liked the game towards the end (when it starts to ponder on what's real and what's not) and I mean, it had a great sense of action, drama, despair and everything... but the gameplay was just horrible. The use of stealth can be avoided when you're not afraid of walking in the room, shooting all the guys (or running straight through the room) and moving on. The stealth controls were also really lousy. Sliding along the wall had my thumbs in uncomfortable positions and it was too difficult to use firearms from the fixed third-person viewpoint. And then the bosses... god, the bosses. Horrible. Especially the last boss. Raiden moves so crappily the fight just feels completely out of touch and out of order. It doesn't seem like the enemy's movements were meant to co-respond with what Raiden could do. Boss battles were just all over the place and they felt like crap. Overall I think Metal Gear Solid 2 would have worked better as anime rather than a game.
Though that doesn't change the fact that I enjoyed the story immensely. I actually really want to play Metal Gear Solid 4 to know how things finish up.
On a side note, I actually really like Metal Gear Solid 3. I think a lot of the said issues have been improved and refined, and I hope this continues in MGS4.
