Title: [Demo] The Legend of Zelda - UBS (tentative title)
Post by: Tick on July 21, 2007, 11:17:13 am
The Legend of Zelda - Under Burning Stars (Tentative Title)

About the game
The goal of the game is to be a fun mix of my two favourite games: Diablo and Zelda
As such one improves his power by gaining Status Points, Talent Points and new Items that make one stronger.
That would be a typical heck and slash game, but now Zelda comes in. First of all a zeldaish graphics style is used,
adding to that one will find the typical zelda puzzles and sub quests all around the world.

What about a story?
To be honest - there is none yet, same with a real name.

The technical side
The game itself is written in C#, with the code all-in-all ranging around 120k lines.
I've written along the way my own MapEditor, ItemMaker tool and NpcMaker tool.
It's fully object oriented and abstracts away platform or api dependent calls.

And a demo?
See post below.

The team behind the game
Just me so far; if you want to help me out with maping/sprite creation/story writing - please send me a PM. :D

C+C and questions now please! ;]

That's the bad weather and/or late time of the day. *grins* (I have a dynamic weather system! :o)

Thanks all! I may release a first public demo when I get some more content done. \o/
My next todos are to implement a few more talents, create some more items
and to finish the first map and dungeon. Still lots of work ahead!  XD

Zack, it's UBS, not USB, I'm afraid. And, uh, yeah, Tick, this game looks fantastic, seriously. And C#? Mm, a real programming language for once. Well, good luck with your game!

Cheers, another update! I'd like to introduce a new future some of you may know
from Diablo2:
The Cube

The cube has two main uses:
1) Transform items into other items using specific formulas/recipes.
2) Turn all items in the cube into rubees.

Tick, you're just amazing! Firstly, by using C# you are ensuring programming quality in your game, and secondly mixing Zelda with a Diablo gameplay is just pure genius! I loved the Diablo series (especially the second one with its expansion; wonder if Blizzard will ever release a third installment?), and this is just looking awesome. I was wondering something though, is it possible that you port this to work on the Mono framework? By doing that, you would ensure cross-platform compatibility for your game. Meh just an idea though.

I can perfectly see how the cube would work on a Zelda game, haha I remember having to get Willy's (was that his name?) leg to get to the secret cow level.

Keep up the good work!

Post by: Tick on July 30, 2007, 02:17:04 pm
Thank you AleX! :)
Porting it to Mono should be quite possible! Only problem is that I currently don't have Linux / Mono.
I may get it and try to port it over when I get my new PC. (next year maybe:p)

It's going all fine here on my side with the game.
I keep implementing new features and creating more content. \o/

More screenshots to come soon! XD

W00t, the Horadric Cube, that's my favorite item, it's cube shaped, you can't go wrong.

Dude, this looks !@#$% awesome. The fact that you're making this using a REAL programming language is enough to make me interested. I'm also digging the Diablo-Zelda gameplay idea. Reminds me vaugley of the Final Fantasy Tactics-Zelda gameplay crossover someone was once working on. I'll be watching this.

Good luck.

The demo is awesome.

I had one problem: I was lvl 4-5 as an archer and I was being engaged by a stalchild and a wisp, when all of the sudden an error occurs and the game quits.

Is there any way to save?

If there isn't, that should be the next thing you add (It is so annoying when you are having a good time in a game and then it quits on you)

Doh! That sucks =( It didn't crash for me .. since 12 levels? (my archer is level 21)
Did you do anything special? Possible to reproduce? Was there any error message?
Oh, and do you have version 1.2 or 1.2a?

Of course there is! Simply press F5 (or press F2 and then click on save).
You can find all controls within the Readme First.txt.

it didn't have a specific error message. It just said and error occured and had to quit. Then It asked if I wanted to report the error to MS.
It's Version1.2a

I found the save function.

anyway it's really well done.

I wish I had your C# skills

Just played a fresh archer from level 1-11. No crash so far. :3
I don't like such bugs that can't be reproduced easily.
But I'm going to look into how I can make the "random error"-messages
contain more information.

Hihi, no wonder. He is level ~19 minimum :D! (Hey, he drops rare and epic level 20 items;)
He's pretty easy for my 21 archer by now.
Good luck finding the right strategy to get him down =p.

Did you start the quest line yet? (the one from the guard at the entrance to the desert)

I started the quests

I'm on the second one.

I can't remember what kind of red potions he wants and how many skeletons.

I have 5 red potions (not small) and have killed lots of skeletons, so I'm confused about what to do.

Heh, yes - the quest stuff is far from done. The next big thing is to create a "Quest Screen".
Still wondering how I should present all that information... . But it indeed is the next thing on my 'TODO' list.

You have to kill 8 Red Skeletons and get 5 "Red Potion"s to finish the second quest.
The quest works, just tested it. :>

Is there any use for the items the mermaids drop? Do they ever drop weapons or armor?

For the mermaid killing quest, can I kill the one that spawns out side of the temple 15 times?

Not yet; But they do drop very nice enquipment. Including an epic bow and an epic quiver. :D

The thing that bugs me most about the game is night-time. It gets completely pitch-black for a good quarter of each day. In real life night is quite that dark. It really bugs me.

Everything else is really good.

I would suggest that before you release another demo, you should get some plot (there is a little but its pretty wishy washy) in there. Also more quests from different people. And last but not least shops. aAfter all whats the point of getting rupees if you can't use them.

Edit: Old hyrule quiver oh yeah!!!

Too dark? You did use the latern, did you? (press L) :D

And about all you've said. That's my goal indeed. To make the world feel more alive. But that's not that easy if you have to manually program everything ^_~. It just needs some time; and I won't give up on that project. =D

Best to read the Readme First.txt!
1-9 uses a skill on the skill-bar.

So for you when you create a new character:
Pressing 1 would swing your sword,
pressing 2 would fire an arrow.

Remember to spend your status (C) and talent points (T)!
And don't mind that you are a bit weak for the first ~2 levels. :>

Enjoy.

....Uhm, yeah I pressed some buttons and something happened. But how the hell can you expect to decently attack using the 1-9 numbers? That's impossible! Just make it like Diablo II with 2 selectable skills and a mouse click! Because the Num Lock keys don't work either.

But I do think how it is right now is the best way ...

@Red_Penguin
Dexterty potions! Planning to also create potions which increase other stats,
             attack speed and/or movement speed.

If you want to reuse any of my sprites or code (decompilation) then please ask me first.
I'd be happy to let you use them/learn from the code. But Credits are a must! :)
Regarding sprites, some are made by me; but most are from others -
those will want to get credit for their work too. So, simply send me a PM
or email (tanek@gmx.at)!

Is this going to be an open source project?
If not, would you release pieces for people to learn from?

this idea is always great, but hard to achieve
and you obviously have a hard time balancing things, though not reprovable
im in the near future going to attempt the same thing in a much smaller scale (hands, feet, armor) :)
good luck

Heh, such games should actually be balanced by using massive amounts of Excel Sheets and data.
Everything must be mathematical correct.
But I don't have the time todo all that if I want to ever come far with this game.
So I just go with my feeling and the oppinion of my testers. =p

Working on the Quest Screen right now, It's really not that easy to show that much information within such a small screen. :x

Oh, and curse you C++ - I want to continue with my game not slowly learn to use DirectX with C++ ..
(It is ugly after being used to C# =P)
Good luck you too!

EDIT:
I've uploaded version 1.2b- This one just adds the Quest Window and is not password protected. (for those that had problems with the password; see the second post in this thread for the links)

Does V1.2b have anything new other than the quest screen?

Nope sorry; just wanted to release a version that is not password protected.
And why shouldn't it be the newest version? :D

Well, it isn't the newest anymore. I just finished the cloud overlay.
(Cloudy weather, cloady and rainy weather, cloady and snowy weather ..!) :]

Screenshot of the quest window: It's very basic - no custom sprites or anything yet. But I somehow like it ingame. ;)

I took me an hour to get from level 14 to 18

After alot of playing, I have found these things

Swords and Bows take too long to use
Takes too long to level up(Already said to you)
Boss is way too hard
Enemies sometimes get stuck(Can't be stopped)

Hi there! Sorry for not replying for so long. :)

I didn't work that much on it - but I've implemented 7 new cool high-level items
and tuned some parameters like the Experience Gain. I also leveled a warrior up
to level 21 - and I've to say they are IMBA! Gotta buff archers now!

Reason of why I didn't work that much on it is that I just began to learn XNA.
And now I'm thinking of porting the game over to use XNA, eleminating all ugly things/code which
the current implementation has, such as reducing the amount of time needed
to add new simple sprites.

Please say so if you are interested in the newest version, I'll upload it then.

In and out,
Tick

The new demo is good, but it is still a chore to level up past 18.

Things I'd love to see in the next few demos:

-More crafting (more stat potions, equipment, uses for the demon hair etc.)

-A shop (my character as arounf 4000 rupees that he can't spend)

-More enemies (The four enemies are good but it gets boring to kill them over and over, also there is a bit of a gap between the difficulty of the enemies and the boss)

-Enemies that attack in different ways (There should be some enemies that throw things etc)

-Plot (one guard with 4 quests isn't much of a plot)

-More NPC's

-A town (this would be nice)

-More dungeons or small challenges

-Alternative ways to gain stat points and skill points (This would allow people to strengthen their character without having to level up (it's always fun to have low level characters with uber stats))

-More areas to explore (even if they don't serve any purpose yet and don't have enemies etc.)

-Skills for characters who focus on stats like intelligence and agility.

-More items

I messed around with the xml files and made a whole bunch of new items/recipes/equiptment, but I don't know how to add new items except by just changing existing ones. I was wondering if you could tell me how you do it. Also how do you make the maps? And if you are looking for help (I doubt it seeing as I haven't seen you ask for it) I'd be happy to make some maps and items etc. for the game.

Anyway good demo and I can't wait for more.
