Demo 3.1 Released! (April 28th, 2006)

(Direct copy from DSR >_>)

Demo 3.1 for Oot:Gb is now complete! Download it with the link below.
Check the Readme file to see what has changed.

If you have never seen this game before...
This is a remake of Ocarina of Time for N64 with Gameboy type graphics and gameplay. Almost everything that was in Oot will be in this game, although some things will have to change in the transition between 3D to 2D.

The demo contains all of Kokiri Forest, Lost Woods, and the Deku Tree Dungeon. Including all enemies, items, Gohma, etc.
You can play up until you get the Kokiri Emerald but cannot enter Hyrule Field.

I just played it (not all of it, I died D= lol) To how authentic the levels are compared to the real one, I don't know, because I haven't played it in quite a long time, but things seemed to be where I expected them to be. It was fun one thing though, it looked pretty dang good. Then engine worked well. I didn't have problems with collisions or anything like that. I noticed one thing that bugged me. It was waaaay to easy to jump of a cliff or something, I'd barely get an edge, and JUMP lol. Other than that it seemed to be really good. I'll have to play more later, those lil buggers killed me arg....

=D I haven't played through all of it yet, but from what I've seen, it's great! I noticed a few glitches, though. When entering the shop for the first time, either when you start playing or after you die, you're forced to move upwards. Link moves himself until he hits the back wall and stops after a few seconds. It also happens when I leave the shop and when I enter the Great Deku Tree. The other glitch I found was in the Lost Woods near the Deku Scrub. I had jumped off the small cliff on accident next to the tree and I was stuck between the two of them. [Cliff and tree] .. so then I died because the Scrub had a clear shot. Hah hah. Anyway, those are the only things I've noticed so far. The controls take a bit of getting used to.. love it otherwise. The change from 3-D to 2-D is flawless and the changes that you had to make in order for it to work blend wonderfully.

Ugh! I'm stuck on Gohma! How do I get her down?!
Other than that, excellent work! Keep it up.

There's a glitch when you're in the first sub-level. The deku-baba in the downer right corner - if you get hit by it, you will bounce away, and with a bit of trying you get in the edge of the door and get stuck.

But this demo simply pwns. :)

Its good for the first oot 2d kokiri forest demo but I don't think it was acurate enough. Hope Hyrule_boy's does a bit better at recapturing the oot spirit. No offence.

The 2nd Mirror worked fine for me. :)

I must say, this demo is....mediocre.

JUST KIDDING!
It's so !@#$% awesome. Seriously, it's the most complete demo I've ever played. It's so accurate, too! And fun! I got to the boss fight with Gohma, but her little spiderlings killed me. They are really hard to kill, perhaps make them weaker in the next demo. :P

This is amazing, dude you rock.
Perhaps add a rolling feature as well.
keep up the awesome work!

It's really awesome, congratz.
BTW, two things:
1 - bug, Mido's house, the downer-left treasure, when I opened it, Link disappeared during the (Ta-da-da-da moment).
2 - is there a way to put it in window?

Well, I just have to say congrats! The demo is almost like OOT
The control isn't the greatest for me though, but your enemies and
your other programing is really good!
Congrats!

Title: Re: "Ocarina of Time: Gb" Demo 3.1 Released!
Post by: FarFromHomeFish on April 28, 2006, 05:45:27 am
Excellent demo. You've really worked with the constraints of the medium to present a fine product. I seem to remember the Deku Tree dungeon being rather more complcated (with three levels in the entryway)... but perhaps you were held back by the 2D nature of the engine, and had to cut out some minor details?

Caveats: sound effects are much lower in volume than the music. I also don't like the way that the gui is part of the room, instead of an overlay (note how the gui scrolls with the room when you move from place to place - did  Link's Awakening also act like this? If so, then never mind.)

And this:
(a) How is it taking up this much memory? You don't have that many graphics/music/sfx in this game to warrant such a huge memory footprint, even if you loaded all the resources when you first start the game...
(b) You're not loading all the resources when you start the game, are you? No wonder the game takes 15 seconds to boot up on my computer! I'm not sure if this is possible in GM, but definitely look into it.

Sure, 100mb of memory isn't too bad... most people have 256mb of ram these days, and 512mb is common. But if you're taking up 100mb of ram for just the first town and dungeon, good god, the final game might take up 10x what you're using now. That would be a bad thing. =P

I'll end with another positive take, to balance out all the crits I posted above. This is the furthest I've ever seen an OoT 2D demo progress. You've soundly trounced that TRM-fellow. Well done. I look forward to seeing this game develope in the future! =)
Title: Re: "Ocarina of Time: Gb" Demo 3.1 Released!
Post by: AoDC on April 28, 2006, 05:55:55 am
My game takes up 70mb of ram. It's GameMaker that does it, not the game. Its odd, because huge MMORPG games take up 10mb of ram with 10x more!

I keep dying when I get to Gohma! Those little critters hatch way too fast! And the eggs should be destroyable with sword.
Title: Re: "Ocarina of Time: Gb" Demo 3.1 Released!

you can destroy them with your sword...
gohma was actually pretty easy, just like... RUN AWAY from those little things and they wont get you.
and it was just a demo, so im glad it was difficult there unstead of increadibly easy. it wetted my whistle :P
(im looking forward to your next release)

Yes there is, it's called JoyToKey.
I tried that program on this game with one of my gamepads
and it works fine.
And I will have customizable controls in the next demo.

And about sprites disappearing after opening a chest or something, I think that's gamemaker error(It happens with all my fullscreen games) It should only happen if you alt+tab while the game is open, so don't do it.

It was way too difficult Knightmare :P. You should probably consider making it a little easier :P. Because, Gohma was not that difficult in the real game.

Good work Knightmare ;).

The only one to finish a demo from deku tree... Yet. Anyways, very good. I loved how you converted some 3d things to work in 2d! It was pretty hard, but i like challenges. And like HoF said, Gohma shouldn't be so hard :/. I'm expecting great things from this oot ^_^

If your smart enough to kill those little eggs before they hatch then yes, it is increadibly easy... if you let them hatch and dont run away, then you die fast! lol
...i must have played through this demo like 5 times already...
Title: Re: "Ocarina of Time: Gb" Demo 3.1 Released!
Post by: Kleaver on April 29, 2006, 12:10:47 pm
Those little larvas are way too fast and hard. I can hardly defend myself from them.

Gohma should stay down MUCH, MUCH longer...cuz when I finally kill those eggs Gohma climbs up again.

In OoT I hardly even GAVE Gohma a chance to climb up, I killed her fast.

Here's some help to beating Ghoma's pesky larva (who are more difficult to kill than Ghoma herself, imo.) Use your slingshot, and if you run out of ammo, cut the bushes in the corners of the room (which regenerate after a few seconds.) If this spoils it for anyone, let me know and I'll refrain from any further hints...  ;D
Title: Re: "Ocarina of Time: Gb" Demo 3.1 Released!
Post by: Alex2539 on April 30, 2006, 09:37:04 pm
Yeah that was what I did. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't shoot Gohma off the ceiling like in the 3d version because in the real one, I've never given Gohma the opportunity to drop eggs... ever. Your version was much more challenging :D.
Title: Re: "Ocarina of Time: Gb" Demo 3.1 Released!
Post by: FarFromHomeFish on April 30, 2006, 09:48:40 pm
Gohma was easy for me, but I exploited the engine to win. Doubtless had I tried to defeat Gohma normally, I would have failed miserably. Here were my tactics: when the larva hatched, I 'hid' behind the block radius of one of the pillars. The little larva don't actually path find towards you; they just close in on a direct vector towards the character, thus, if you put something between you and them, they'll just hang there until they see you again. Thus, I could jump out from behind the pillar and aggro one of them at a time. =)

The reason they're so hard, with normal tactics, is that they bumrush you all at once, and your sword hits only stop one at a time, even if the sword slash LOOKS like it intersects more than one of them. If this bug was fixed, then the little buggers would be much easier to kill. =)

So, two suggestions: look into the sword intersection bug I described above... and then implement path finding if you can. =)

I'd like to reiterate my previous point, just to stick it to someone whom I've naught but contempt: this is a tremendous demo; it's far more advanced than TRM ever displayed the skill to finish. Keep it up, I look forward to your next demo. =)

dont release a demo every time a dungeon is finished, i suggest you wait until you get up to the master sword to release another demo, then after that wait until the game is done. that way we will enjoy it much better than if you were to release one demo per level.

You should be able to defend against the gohma larva with your shield.

But at least release some screenshots if you are going to do that please!

Also, what does the "Hard Mode" do? Just add more ennemies?

What are you working on right now? Hyrule Field? You should really get inspiration from HoF's version, you would finish it a lot faster!

EDIT: sorry knightmare, i didn't mean it unpleasant. it's just an advice
Dragon, before you comment like that I suggest to try to make a UN-BUGGY, AWESOME SPRITE OoTGB. Then I might take your suggestion into thinking.

Amazing demo! I applaud your work, Knightmare! It is nearly flawless in design, however, I did find just a couple of errors:

*After the battle with Gohma, when you recieve the Kokiri's emerald from the Great Deku Tree, Link will be unable to use any of his weapons, even if you set them to different buttons in the menu. I have found that diving into the deep water near the shop can reactivate weapon use, however.

*It seems that Gohma larva can still fall outside the room via the part where the closed door is.

*This isn't really an error, but when Link is being teleported out of the Deku Tree, he stops at the wall, making the illusion of him floating upward foiled.

*If you throw an object (i.e. a pot) while you are facing downward, but have a wall directly behind you, the object will hit on the wall behind Link, and break on the floor, instead of being throw away from it. I know this may sound a bit confusing, but you'll see what I mean when you try it.

Otherwise, this demo was great! Keep up the good work!

That would be the Forest Stage. If you wear various masks while standing there (I presume on the little tile right below Link seen here), you will get various effects. The Skull Mask will get your Deku Stick carrying capacity upgraded by 10, the Mask of Truth will get your Deku Nut carrying capacity upgraded by 10, and the other masks will get one of three random reactions: the Deku Scrubs will leave you Rupees, they will spit Deku Nuts at you, or they will stare at you quizzically.

(BTW: the second Deku Stick upgrade is to be had from a Deku Scrub in the screen beyond the Skull Kid, and the second Deku Nut upgrade is to be had from a Deku Scrub at the bottom of a hole beneath a bombable boulder in the Lost Woods.)

Hey, this demo looks fantastic! I'll download it tomorrow, can't wait to play it :) But, here's a question. Does this actually run on the GBC, or, is it an actual exe?

Oh ok, cool. I hate to keep pestering, but is there a chance it will be on the GBC? I mean, has the dev team expressed intrest in a GBC port?

pfff... it's nice but very buggy dude,

Where was it buggy? If you tell me, I could fix it.

There is much problems with doing things like Turn that thing with fire on with a dekustick. The only manner to do that is doing backwards, and Fighting against moving objects can glitch the link or kill him once.

Yeah. The funny thing is that I can use cheat engine to view bits of code in the memory.

Also, through use of programs, I can completely decrypt OOTGB back into its GMD form - but I wouldn't exploit this.

Thats possible? I wonder if Invincibull would continue on with his game if he could get his Gmd back. Can it decrypt Gm6s?

Its Great! ;D I played it through and only found one glitch which really is quite hard to figure out how it happened anway ???. I was basically pushing the left and down arrow keys after talking to Mido, I couldnt stop link from moving when I had released the keys and had to end as I couldn't get control back. :o

Its good anyhow and if made into a full game, I would definitly play it to the end, keep it up! :P

this is the oot remake which has the most content i've ever played. and i loved every minute of the demo
and i love how you stuck true to how oot is and especially how it sticks true to all gb zelda games and how they work, yet the oot puzzles still manage to be the same and where there was a thin line between gb zelda and oot in parts, you got it on the right side of that line (well i think so anyway)

all i can say is, i cant wait for the next demo :D, keep up the good work :)

This is an awesome demo, but when fighting Gohma, her spawn killed me too many times! I usually have to get two pillars between me and the spawn and quickly shoot them with the slingshot! Also, when I was trying to hit her eggs with the sword, she dropped an egg and it went off the screen, and she wouldn't come down until it was destroyed!

The last thing I encountered was this, and everytime it appeared, I'd wuickly have to click "Ok" so the game screen wouldn't minimize. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Awesome Demo!

Updated link for Oot 8-bit music
The project name is "Triforce", and it will be a remix of the entire Oot soundtrack in NES/GB music chip. Its by some guy named Spamtron.

Knightmare, if you want your OotGB remix to be authentically GB sounding, ask him if you can use these... cuz these would sound awesome In OotGB

mp3's slow the game down? :S, or do you mean make the filsize bigger so it takes longer to download?
how about having the game downloaded with midis as default, but have a seperate mp3 pack downloadable too? :P

Gamemaker doesn't use C or C++
It has it's own code library (I think)

And the demo = very cool :P
fighting gohma is easyer than on the N64 (I think that's a positive thing)
And the inside dekutree level: It's VERY good
A ocarina of time 2D demo has never made it this far! ;D

Excellent demo! The engine was almost flawless except for the 'walk-automatically-in-one-direction-after-leaving-abuilding' glitch and the sensitive cliffs. However, I forgot how to do that one room in the Deku Tree where you had to set the torch alight with the Deku Stick...I have no idea how to do this because Deku Sticks can't be left out as far as I'm aware.

I found a pretty major bug I think. O_o
If you hold down when you leave Mido's house it turns on like a auto-walk (walking down-ward) and you cant reverse it.
I basically had to quit the game to fix it. >_<

But besides that, the game looks AWESOME! Very very nice looking and very close to OOT. The only things I saw that could be improved would be the sensitivity of jumping. (Couldnt get that rupee on the bridges so easily cause of it. >.>) And fixing that Mido's house problem I just mentioned earlier.  ;)

you sure thats not because you hold down and then put the game out of focus, then brought it back into focus? as if you do that with any key in gm, they all act as if they are still being pressed and you can fix it by just pressing the key again. but i dont thats it in this case though :P

Beat it. Gohma, this time, you have to either destroy the eggs or kill the larvae. If you have to kill the larvae, I find the slingshot comes in handy ;) Great job, Knightmare. Keep it up.

Question:When you are in the room west of the room with the pit to fall down to the 3 deku scrubs, when you burn the web to the north wall, how do you get through the door with that wll there?

Problem:The deku tree is actually supposed to be on the west side of the forest and the exit out of the forest is east.

I was just going up against Ghoma and she got stuck on the ceiling and nothing I did could get her down weird...

How are you supposed to beat Ghoma anyway she nearly always goes right back up before you do anything, and when she doesn't my seeds go right through her as if I never had shot her or she isn't there.

ok, ur computer has a graphics problem, because on some computers it doesn't show ghoma's shadow. you are supposed to shoot the shadow and ghoma falls down, then you slice her.

I've seen the demo a few days ago...

and...
IT'S SO DAMN !@#$% AWSOME!!!

well...
doesn't anyone have the .gm6 file of it?

please, I could need it, because of the text engine, and opening...
and I have problems with creating the right HUD...
I don't know why, but the Icons never appear on the same place...
as you see, I'm quite a noob...

but about the demo:
I think that you really should change the controls a bit...
it doesn't feel right with having to equip the sword to a button to slash...
I know it's gameboy feeling, but it doesn't match OoT...

If you're so new to game design, you wouldn't be able to make heads or tails of the game's source anyways.

Get some tutorials, open game maker, LEARN ON YOUR OWN. If you cant figure out how to make a text engine, how to use views, how to make your own HUD, etc, you'll never manage to make your own game.

Onto my playtest of the demo
It was great! (what I played of it). True to the GB Zelda feel, and still true to OOT. Although it does feel different having to use item slots in an OOT game for a sword & shield, it makes perfect sense in the GB Zelda system. This is the first 2D OOT remake that I have found to be promising. Keep up your good work! And if you start falling behind, remember this: you're already farther than anybody else has gotten on an OOT2D game, so nobody can !@#$% at you for it! :D

Hi, and welcome to ZFGC! You should be able to find tutorials, examples, and answers to your questions in our Programming section (http://www.zfgc.com/index.php/board,10.0.html) of the forum. Also, it might not be a bad idea to have a look at the official GameMaker's site, as they have a FAQ (http://www.gamemaker.nl/faq.html), tutorials (http://www.gamemaker.nl/tutorial.html), a forum (http://forums.gamemaker.nl/), and countless other resources at your disposal. Also, Games Showcase (http://www.gmshowcase.dk/) and the Game Maker Games (http://www.gamemakergames.com/) websites offer a plethora of games made in GM, some that include the source code!

Well good luck with your programming and hey, everyone has to start somewhere.

Played it and liked it. This is the first 2D zelda game that I have ever played that is more than just walking around in a random field with plants everywhere. This looks really nice. And it was fun.

Now for the criticism. When leaving a house or something, you aren't fully at the exit before it changes rooms. It's very minor, and doesn't effect the gameplay at all, but it's probably something that would make the game look better if changed.

Also, when I entered the Great Deku Tree, it was like the up button was stuck. It wouldn't let me walk down, and continued to walk up even though I wasn't pressing the button. It was the only time it happened to me.

Anyway, great game. Keep up the good work!

The load time is already pretty long Knightmare and it will only get longer, How farther you will get! Extern resources are the future. I hope you already got over the *People can steall the resources* part. There is just no frikking way to prevent those !@#$%'s from stealing the resources. They can even see our coding so it would be wise if you woud put the sprite's/sound's/Music/etc extern. People don't want to wait 10 minute's for your game to load. I was very impressed by your demo, I did notice a bug though. If you exit a house and don't press the down arrow key, you will continue to move down. A few things bothered me mainly just the edge thing...It would be a lot better if it wasn't as sensitive, and maybe implement and hanging on feature? I hope to see music and sound for the next release, and navi have more implementation instead of always saying "SEE THE GREAT DEKU TREE!" Overall, I liked it alot and played with it for over an hour without even noticing the time had gone by. Keep up the great work.

'Tis a shame this project seems to be at a halt. It was so great, I played it twice  ;D. Very accurate, and surprisingly no bugs for me.
Please, Knightmare, come back and finish the project!  :(

Ok, so err...

Sorry about not updating or posting here in such a long time. Truth is, I've been slowly losing interest in making this game, and I have hardly made any progress since the last demo.
Although I don't want to cancel this since I already put so much work into it, this game is now on hold for awhile.
The good news is, you have something new to look forward to. I've been working on an original zelda game for the past few months. I should have a playable demo (with at least one dungeon, hopefully two) by Z3 (whenever that is).
I might continue Oot:Gb after I finish that >_>.
The new game isn't too long, so it shouldn't take too long to make.

I think I speak for the majority of people when I say I'd be more disappointed to find you have been working on ootgb these past few months rather than an original game ;)

Unfortunately not, I'm afraid.  It's made with Game Maker (http://www.gamemaker.nl/), and it'll only ever be able to work on your PC.

Actually, if you wanted to spend decades attempting this, it is possible if you have a team of like 10 people who work for several hours hecking the OoA/OoS/LA rom, expanding it, adding new items and text and remodeling dungeons. But that would take a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time.

what do you guys even think about that?! its a game maker game! if he wants to make it in different systems he would have chosen c/basic or something else and not "Game maker"... gm is for pc and nothing else...

He said it was on hold and that he is not working on it for a while.  If he wants it moved back, then it can be moved back without an update, but if a month goes by, then he can only move it back with an update.  It was moved mainly due to him putting it on hold and so he would not feel pressured to continue when he did not want to.  If he wants to make it good, then he needs to feel motivated to make it so.  If he feels this moderation action was unjustified, he can PM the moderation staff to get it fixed; PM me and I will get it done the quickest.

I am not the one who originally moved it.

Ok, wow.
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.
That is my expression on my face to your game. I'm amazed, and I loved the GB style (especially the sounds of the text bar ^__^). The only thing that sometimes bugged me was the monsters... I had trouble hitting them.
Other than that I was amazed, some sounds need to be fixed up and you're golden.
GOOD JOB :D
