UPDATE: I decided to make him more modern so I can use him for my current project. He still has mostly pillow shading, but I worked on his shoes and thined him out abit, I know the stances look weird as well but I'm planning to touch those up alot after I get the final look down.

Dude, thats WAYYYY better then my first sprite, you rock.
-
good work hbrandinewm, you're talented =P
-
Awesome for your first sprite, but it's little pillowish and you should add more contrast with the shirt and pants. But, if you continue spriting, you'll be a great spriter for sure ;)
-
Very nice for a first sprite - you got a good pose and some nice shading.
The hand outline looks a little out of place, try a darker brown maybe. More contrast too.

Meh, it's ok, lots of crits though.
1. Pillow Shaded - The darker color is on the outside, and gets light towards the middle, giving it a pillowish effect.
2. Jagged Lineart - Anti-Aliasing is your friend bud :)
3. Bit to many colors - Makes it look a bit jumbled.
Those are the most apparent ones, but, nonetheless, good job for your first!
By the way, in no way was I trying to put you down, just giving you crits.

I changed him a bit, I made him look more modern (he looked like Auron from FFX in a sort of way.)
I haven't reshaded him but I did reoutline his hands in a dark color.

Don't understand what you mean in two. and for 3 I made his jacket a dark green and its not so poofy, more like a regular jacket.
-
Anti-Aliasing is a technique that makes your lineart look not so rugged, go to spriteart.com for a tutorial on it.
