Other Projects / Re: [Demo] Super Smash Bros
« on: January 05, 2010, 03:42:50 am »
I really love the engine. It's the best Super Smash Bros thats ever been made in Game Maker. But still, I can't wait until you put some other sprites in this work.

Thanks!  Yes the character sprites leave something to be desired currently, but In order to fast track the development of game play some of the graphics have been kinda put to the side.  There is quite a list of sprites required to complete each characters actions, and if the truth be told I'm not the best spriter...  It took me a while just to sprite what I already have.

If anyone wants to help with character spriting I would be happy to post a list for the needed sprites and there dimensions.  Of course credit would be given along with my eternal gratitude.  They just can't be too good or my levels will look like crap... er  more like crap.  XD

Characters I'm interested in: (Also in first post)
-Link
-Kirby
-Fox
-Battletoads (I really want to put these guys in)
-Mario
-Luigi
-C. Falcon
-Chrono (From Chrono Trigger SNES)
-Magus (Also Chrono Trigger SNES)
-Pikachu (that little annoying runt)

-If you want to make a stage that would be cool too, but if you do that put the background and the actual platforms in different files. Any questions just ask.

As far as the controls are concerned I will go ahead and change them to the "uhjk" pattern as suggested so look for that in the next demo.

As far as an update is concerned I am still working on AI.  The holidays slowed me down a little.  The AI is using an A* algorithm with Airslide's Motion Planning Extension for GM.  They can successfully navigate a maze if they need to, and also pick up items.  I still need to make them attack, but it is coming along.  Also a few small glitches have been fixed.  Hopefully it won't be too long before I have the next demo out so you can test it and tell me what needs fixing.  Thanks for all of your suggestions and support!

Okay.  I have had a number of people say that they would like the controls changed...  If anyone would like to submit a suggestion for the layout of the keys until custom keys can be implemented please do so.  I would like to keep Player 1 on on WASD and Player 2 on the Arrow keys as far as movement is concerned.  Remember that two people should be able to use the same keyboard, so spacing is important.  Thanks!

My only peeve with this game is the controls, but this is by far the most flawless SSB game EVER (aside from SSB >_>)

That is understandable.  The reason I have been hesitant to change it is because I want to keep the keys close together to make it easier for two people to play on a keyboard.  Also because it is the way I'm used to setting up my keys.  It is difficult to satisfy everybody when the keys are not customizable, but I will consider changing them.  Thanks

Okay.  I have been working hard.  Demo 2 is ready to be downloaded.  There is quite a bit new.

-Links Boomerang
-Revamped Slopes ( interact better with items and characters)
-Jump through platforms
-Fixed bugs
-Can now choose from three different Levels
     * Hyrule Castle
     * Sector Y
     * A debug level I through in just for fun

-Some other stuff too

Take a look at it http://www.zfgc.com/index.php#?action=games&sa=view&id=147

Thanks for your time and feedback!

Oh yah.  The controls are the same, but I'm hoping at some point to make them customizable, if I can figure out how.

Aha! YES! One word: SMOOTH.

If people are turned off by the graphics, don't be. It's obvious that they're just placeholders.

This WIP really feels brilliant! The camera acts great! Everything is really feeling good to me here. :)

This has better potential than any other Smash clone I've seen. And I've seen waaay too many. :P

Yes the Graphics are not the best currently, that will come with time.  I have seen quite a few SB clones myself, and they never really were convincing.  That is actually one of the reasons I started this.  Hopefully, This one won't end up in the same category.

That is an incredibly smooth engine! You can definitely feel all the work put into it while you're playing! The movement is very fluid, and all of the attacks are there! Keep up the good work, and this game definitely goes on my radar!

Thank you I appreciate it.  Also not included in the demo is the ability to modify game play.  Features like gravity, teams, increasing and decreasing character sizes, acceleration, and attack power just to name a few.  I'll keep working on it as time permits.

Wow!  Well it has been quite awhile since I've been here, and I am quite pleased to see that this project is still active.  Just had to say like 99.99% of the people who have posted.  This is simply suburb.  The best Zelda fan game.  And it is proof to that fact that even in it's incomplete form it has won competitions and been attached to. . . somewhat awkward Google searches.  A fan game of this quality deserves recognition as does the mastermind behind it.  You would certainly be an asset to Nintendo should they (and they should) offer a job and heaven forbid let you make a little profit off of it.  Good quality work.  Keep it up KM!

Hey just a idea it may be an interesting idea to throw a King Mob in as a main boss to a dungeon.  Kind of a signature to your game.  But I would guess that by now you probably already have the bosses planned.  Well whatever you do will be good I'm sure.

Wow, I tried it and it is good.  I liked it.  It is lacking attack types though.  Like just normal punches and kicks in the various directions.  And why does kirby's ground pound thing last for so short.  You can only use it if you are just above the ground.  It should work no matter how high you are.  Another words it should last until you hit the ground.  Over all I really liked it though.  I hope that the fact that you are making it in nes style won't keep you from changing things that are easy to fix, yet greatly improve game play.  I like that you are sticking to the nes style of game, but to some extent it does need to be modernized.  I think the reason most nes games didn't have cool complex moves and such was because they couldn't program it.  If you can program more complex things now, I think it would greatly improve your game.  Good Job!  Keep up th work.

COOL!!!  I can't wait to try the Demo.  If it is anywhere near as good as it sounds you will be doing very well.

Yes actually.  I hope that they aren't too bad.  I am not that good at the drawing, so it took me a long time to even draw those.

Hm...  It looks like it should work.  I tried to run it on my PPC and it said this.

"There is no application associated with "Zelda". Run the application first and then open this file from within the application."

Is there a Phone emulator that I need or am I just missing something?  Sorry for the trouble.

Just based on the screen shots the items look a little too small, but the game looks interesting.   XD

Wow this looks really good!!!  Will it be posible to play on a Pocket PC?  Say a Dell Axim X30 for instance?
I play it on my Orange M2000 which runs Windows Mobile, and it works fine :)
So which version of the game would be the best to download to see if it will work on my axim?

Yes, BattleToads had very good graphics for the NES, but at least it is in the right time frame.  The SNES sprites are better mainly because they have more shading, but they could be toned down to match the sprites in your game.  I think even the NES sprites would need to be toned down a little if they were to match the sprites of the other characters.  I would take a lot of work true, but I think the character would be worth it.  Smash Bros Nes = Awesome Game!!!,  Smash Bros Nes with BattleToads = Unbeatable Fan Game!!!   ;)

I think the game was also ranked one of the Hardest Nes Games ever made.  I'm not sure about that, but I think it was.

Wow, I'm actually getting really exited about this.  I just realized ow much you really have to put battle toads in this.  Here is a sprite page if you didn't already have one.  I got this from the Sprite Database here http://sdb.drshnaps.com/index.htm.  This particular sprite page I got in the Snes section, but it is not to way better then the nes version sprites.  I will find some from the actual nes game.  Oo Oo Oo, please put the battletoads in your game.  It would be sa-weet!!!  XD, these were riped by ryan914 it says.  Battletoads was the best fighting game ever made for the nes!!!

Here are some screen shots from the nes version

The nes graphics aren't quits a good, but there are all the moves.  I am having trouble finding a sprite page though for strictly nes version.
