Awhile ago there was a topic her about Skyward Sword and it seemed that a lot of people really liked it and didn't like Twilight Princess ...  So I may be opening a can of worms here, but so far I am kinda disappointed in SS.  Granted I am only at the 3rd dungeon and am still playing it so don't go giving everything away on me.  Anyway.  There are a number of reasons I liked TP better than SS so far.

Twilight Princess
-Extremely involving environment/graphics
-did I mention awesome graphics
-Creative game elements including snowboarding, escorting the carriage, horse back battles
-You could skip text
-Perfect Musical Score
-Awesome level design.  I loved every level!
-Humorous
-Your guide (Midna) was cool and most of the time not annoying.
-Small text when you are too far away to listen in on someones conversation.
-The game was too easy though...
-I could go on and on.

Skyward Sword
-I liked being able to run...  But a stamina bar...  Ugh!
-Cartoony graphics...  Ugh!
-A very annoying guide (I forgot her name) that prances around at the end of levels and gives you hints you don't even want and can't skip!!!
-The guides voice is also annoying and hard to hear past when trying to read her annoying hints!
-Short/less creative levels...  at least what I have found so far.
-Way too easy!
-The one really cool feature is the motion control.  Attacking enemies is fun and each enemy is more of a threat than in TP.  I is funny to see them role down hills and fall off of tight ropes as well.
-I do find the shop back at your hometown humorous...  Thats a good thing too.
-Feels more restricted to me than TP did.  The path ahead of you is pretty linear.  so far
-I like all the items/bugs you can catch
-The sky theme...  when you are flying.  Sounds just like Super Mario Galaxy...  Just doesn't fit...
-You can't skip text!!!  Ugh!!!
-I can't think of anything else right now...  but you get the point

Anyway.  I am not saying that SS isn't worth playing because it has some good features and I plan to finish it, but it just seems like a letdown after TP to me.  Come on...  The western villige in TP was classic!  I was laughing and enjoying the game the whole way through with TP, and I was sad when it was over...  But the same can not be said for SS in my opinion...  So...  How about you guys?

Like I did with Super Mario 3D Land, you should not hurry to conclusions just yet. Finish the game first before you render a final verdict. In my opinion I think SS is better than TP.

I am not really a fan of the realistic graphics of TP. I like the more cartoony look of SS a lot better. And both have an equal good soundtrack and soundeffects. In gameplay there are a lot of differences. I like the controls of SS a lot better. SS definitely shows what the Wii's motion controls is all about. In sword fighting SS is far more involved than TP. Your swing does matter and the shield is more then just blocking. In SS there are more memorable characters then in TP. I would go in detail, but that would be spoiling. I can say, that you should watch out for Groose. And SS has its creative elements as well, but that would once again be telling. Storywise TP and SS are equally linear and humorous.

With the world and dungeons. SS's world seems small, because it is five different parts. But together the world is just as big as in TP. Also the overworld is filled more and you revisit a lot of places more often. I never missed the horse riding. In TP there are a lot of parts in the world that looked big, but that was mostly because they were rather empty. The dungeons seem small, because the maps do not show many floors and just a few rooms. But the dungeon is mostly made up of larger rooms, with several elevations. One floor in SS can easily be 3 to 4 floors in TP. I also think that one dungeon in SS is one of the best dungeons in the series.

I could go on but you first have to finish the game. I am not saying SS has its flaws, because it has some major flaws. But I find SS way better. Not to mention that the ending contains something that I really missed in OOT and TP.

In my opinion, OoT and LttP trump all.  Really have not enjoyed a Zelda game since except for a bit of Minish Cap.
While I had TP, it just felt like I was going through the motions to beat the game.  I had no drive to find any extras at all.  I do not have a Wii anymore, but i'd imagine the same could be said of SS.  Maybe Wind Waker took too much out of me because while it was a good game, I did not enjoy the sailing.  Watched a friend play SS for a while and it looks like the Flying is similar to the sailing.  He says that there is not really an overworld.  You revisit alot of places and so on.  Granted, I have not played it myself but he took about 50 hours to beat it, so he may know what he is talking about.
That said, I just have not enjoyed Zelda games as games.  Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past had me exploring the overworld, trying to find all the hidden items and heart pieces.  I felt as though I could really do what I wanted.  I did not feel hampered by story progression.  When I beat TP I really felt pushed to finish the story, I never enjoyed looking for anything.  After the first 2 dungeons I had a mindset of "I paid $49 for this, just finish it".

Maybe I am too much of a nostalgic person but the new Zelda games of late have not really grabbed me like the past generation of them did.
That being said, when i get my tax returns, I plan of purchasing a 3DS and OoT3d.  I am holding out that Nintendo will make a couple good Zelda games for the 3DS.

Oh and I 100% prefer realistic to cartoon when it comes to the 3d Zelda games.  For the 2d, I enjoy all the styles.
The only 3d cartoon styled games I really think had great graphics when the Kingdom Hearts games, but those were not cel-shaded best as I can remember.  Just anime styled.

Well...  I suppose I should give it more time before allowing myself to be too disappointed, but I do have to agree with theforeshadower on the graphics.  3D Zelda games need realistic graphics.  For instance I saw a teaser trailer for an HD Zelda game.  I suppose they showed it at one of their conferences or something.  and that looked awesome!  I am somewhat nostalgic as well I suppose.  I don't think OOT, or LttP will ever get old for me.  I will have to wait and see what else SS has to offer.  I will have to update my opinion of the game after I have played more of it.  But no matter what happen in the futer it is still really annoying not to be able to skip text, or to avoid hints and tips from sword chick friend...

On a side note... I have a theory that I suppose may be interesting.  Theforeshadower mentioned nostalgia for the older zelda games as I also have.  Could it be that gammers are simply more enticed by story lines when they are young?  Perhaps the young gammers of today will hold the same nostalgia for TP and SS, that we seem to hold for the older titles that we played as kids?  If you liked it as a kid one tends to like it for life!  But perhaps as we get older games have less of an impact on us...  So we are left only with the nostalgia of the games we played as kids.  I come to this conclusion because in all honesty there seem to be very few games that come out today that I seem to connect to like I did when I was younger.  This could be because the games made today are simply less interesting...  or it could be that it is because I am older, and less influenced by them...  Just a though.

Well, I have played SS for 100+ hours now and I am still not done playing. With TP however I finished the story after 50+ hours and put the game away for a long time.

Here we can agree to disagree. Because in my opinion a Zelda game needs the graphics fitting the story and gameplay. That said I still prefer the more cartoony style. And I hope seriously that the HD Zelda techdemo (because wasn't more than a techdemo) does not get made into a full game and that the next Zelda once more has a cartoony style graphics.

On a side note... I have a theory that I suppose may be interesting.  Theforeshadower mentioned nostalgia for the older zelda games as I also have.  Could it be that gamers are simply more enticed by story lines when they are young?  Perhaps the young gamers of today will hold the same nostalgia for TP and SS, that we seem to hold for the older titles that we played as kids?  If you liked it as a kid one tends to like it for life!  But perhaps as we get older games have less of an impact on us...  So we are left only with the nostalgia of the games we played as kids.  I come to this conclusion because in all honesty there seem to be very few games that come out today that I seem to connect to like I did when I was younger.  This could be because the games made today are simply less interesting...  or it could be that it is because I am older, and less influenced by them...  Just a though.
Nostalgia is definitely a factor. To me LttP is still the best Zelda game ever. But that has mostly to do with the fact that it is also the first Zelda game that introduced me to the series. The same was with other games. But as I got older you start to notice patterns and commonalities. You have tried at least one game in each genre and the "first time WOW" factor just does not happen anymore. As you also grow older you learn to look more critical, see flaws and dissect games. You learn stuff and you learn how to deal with it. It is not that the games just become worse/easier/boring (well some do), but is more that you get used to it.

Just compare the first time that you got to drive a car with the dozens and dozens of times after that. Each time you got more used to it and it became more like going through the motions instead of an experience.

This is good to hear!  I actually had just over 60 hours into TP.  But longer is better in my opinion.  As long as that game time isn't just absorbed by flying everywhere.

Agreed.  Its just artistic preference really.

That is a good example.  In reality many of the zelda puzzels are really quite similar from game to game.  You automatically become trained to look for certain things...  such as torches, or an eyeball on the wall...  Kinda makes you wish you could forget everything about zelda games each time you play a new one.

My first play through was 75+ hours, and I shall not deny that I did not make the occasional trip to enjoy the surroundings.

***SPOILER****
But I am followed by diving into the 2nd Quest called Hero Mode with the cursed medal in my pouch. The game is rather difficult at that point. Too bad you don't need to think about the puzzles and the story any more.
