Contest Description(READ):

Comparison : Old School or New School

Disclaimer: No, I really did not mean to use Mountain Dew's contest name but it fits really well.

Are you old school, or new school?  Do you like remakes?  Do you ever think you could have made a remake better?  Or, are you the type of person who says to leaves things as they are?
Now, YOU get to decide!
If you decide to enter this contest, you must choose whether you are old school or new school( you are allowed to enter both categories...this will be explained further).  After you have chosen, you must then go and select a game that was made anywhere from 1985 to 1999.  You may choose a 3D game but know this:
IF YOU CHOOSE A 3D GAME, YOUR CREATION MUST BE 3D!
This is not a 3D-to-2D contest.

Here are some more guidelines:
Old School | - you MUST use the original graphics, gameplay, music, etc. from the title you choose to                             recreate
                  - your focus is recreate the game almost as close to what an emulator does

New School | - you Must stick with to the theme and style of the game you have chosen
                   - your focus is to take an old game and give it a face lift.  Update the graphics/sprites.
Give it some pretty eye-candy effects.  Better music, etc.
                   - A plus is to also build upon the orginal game's gameplay.  EXAMPLE:  Add stomping to the
original Super Mario Bros. if that had been your choice.

*A fully functional level shows everything the original game had.  If it is an adventure game(IE Zelda), you must either have a fairly good sized overworld or re-create a dungeon.*

You may enter both categories but you MUST choose different games for each category.
You may work as a team.  Submissions will be taken in by me via PM.  This is for contestants
to decide whether or not they want their source code released to the public.
Source code is REQUIRED.

Suggestions for beginners:
Pong
Moon Patrol
Pacman
Asteroids

Suggestions for more advanced programmers:
Super Mario Brothers
Legend of Zelda
Megaman or Megaman X
Sonic
U.N. Squadron (Area 88 in PAL countries I believe.)
Bionic Commando
Cabal
Bad Dudes ( <3 )
Final Fight

Remember, the more effort you put into this, the better your score will probably be.
MOST IMPORTANT: Have fun while you code!

Ill enter. I might end up doing a Zelda 1 remake, or something else,so dont put anything down yet.

Also, using Zelda 1 as an example, if I made it in PAlib, could it still !@#$% as old school if the menu was the bottom screen?

!@#$%? olo

Hmm. Well, yes.  I'll still count it though it may take away some slight value away from the score(not much maybe like a .25 of a point or something).
I'm willing to work it out for ya.  I'm not going to go all out and say no.
I am flexible.

Also,(using the example from before) If I replaced the graphics with BS Zelda and updated music with floafs remakes, would that be legal? (In other words, do I need to make my own GFX and sound for New School?)

~LynkW-Now more annoying than a Lawyer.

Now if you did it BS style, then I would consider it still Old School since BS Zelda was a real game(though not in the states).

New School in that situation would be LttP graphics or MC style...BS Zelda was a legit game hence I could not consider it New School even if you copied the original LOZ with just a BS Zelda face plate.

So we can use resources(except code) than we didnt make in NS.

I think I know what I will do.
Show content

A LOZ remake on the DS in PAlib.
GFX: LTTP Styled LOZ GFX
Sound Effects: Unchanged. (Wait. Were there any?)
BG Music: Floafs remakes(Yes, I have permission to use them.)

Gameplay:
CPad:Move
B:Sword
A:Item
L+R:Pause(Maybe)

On touchscreen, LOZ like menu thing appears. Touch icon to change A Item HUD stuff(hearts, rupees, etc) also displayed here.
On TopScreen Game happens.

Above is CopyRight LynkW.

~LynkW-Currently collecting all GFX and Sounds.

Assuming that an upcoming one-week vacation and one week of bailing straw will not be that much of a hindrance, I will enter this as an "old school" participant with the game I am replicating to the best of my abilities being Pokemon Blue, if that is alright.  I am going to make it in Game Maker 7 which I have although it is unregistered; this does not produce much of a problem in that there are almost no issues with transparencies.  This contest is convenient in that I was starting to make such a remake just last week.

Throw me in for a "new school" entry.

Quick thing, though.
Why is it that for the competitions that require little talent related to what ZFGC is *supposed* to be about (games development), you give out awards that aren't worth DICK, yet for things like effects, you give out awards that actually hold monetary value? :/

There's such a double standard about religion in the modern world. Catholics can gather, wear white robes, and say "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti" and be considered normal.

But if my friends and I gather, wear black robes, and say  "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn", we're considered cultists.

Because this competition is TFS's idea, he dosen't have any money to give. Had it been an admins decision money may have been available. I'll see what can be done.

I'll probably be doing new school, FYI.

Also, why 1985-1999 (I get the 1999 part, just not the 1985)? Tic-Tac-Toe was ran graphically on computers in 1952

:)

Pong was released in 1972, and The Galaxy Game a year before that...and Pacman was released in 1980. A lot of the games you suggested are out of the allowed area.

Pong was re-released on many consoles throughout the end of the 80s and the 90s.
I chose this time frame because it was a very important time for videogames, IMO.
Remember, videogames were actually in a bad slump until 1985 when the Nintendo was released.
Then 1999 signifies well not exactly the PS2 launch (It was 23 days after 1999...Jan. 23, 2000) but essentially the birth of more advanced games.  Some may argue that the Dreamcast was.  Whatever.
This is not what the contest is about.  I chose '85-'99 because that's what I chose.
Simple as that.

Also, those of you who wish to enter and have yet to pick a game, you have until the end of registration to post the game you choose.

EDIT: Also, for those of us who have chosen a game already, you may change your choice of game if you do so before July 6th.

My suggestion would be not entering the contest if you don't like the specifications for the contest. Ranging between prizes/awards and specific bits in relation to the contest's regulations.
