Hi! I've decided to make some rather unique looking Zelda tiles/sprites and such, as it might be more interesting for a developer to have a game that doesn't look the same like so, so, so many others.

If anybody wants to use anything, feel free to do so(with credit given if it is made outside of zfgc.com of course).

Or maybe we could even try having a go at making a game together? It's supposed to be similar to LA and ALttP, with more vibrant colous, and a different take on Link while attempting to keep some of that oldschool feel with the random cutoffs as opposed to MC's seamless tiling. Only publishing here because it is no use having game art unless its being used for something :) I can make more directions for sprites such as Link and the example enemy and might be able to animate them myself, if such a thing is requested. Variation can be done via small edits and simple re-colouring, which is what I've had in mind. 18 colours+trans(pink) so far.

Title screen modules:

Super easy to put together a legit Zelda splash screen. Throw in some details and a drop shadow or something and that's it!

Current tileset:

It's kinda messy. I promise I'll fix that in the future! And add much, much more to it...

Current sprites:

Sprites is not my strong suite, but I try damnit! Might animate in the future...

Current HUDS(HUD2 is NES resolution since it is outlined, to allow for more shown on the rest of the screen):

Current mockup, including HUD and some sprites(GBA resolution):

NOTE: Apart from the tileset sheet, there are some stray colours in mockup, sprites and HUD. The palette included in the set has all the singular colours that have been used so far.

Looks pretty decent I'd say, though the screen looks cluttered.  Try making some of the icons smaller, and more in one spot, instead of every corner of the screen.  The less on screen, while still conveying the same amount of information, the better.

They look beautiful! Well done man!
It will look awesome if it was in a game, although it would be even awesome if you made an original game, zelda style. Be creative! You can create a new world with new races and such! You can make an original game with this tiles.

If you go down this route, I can help with ideas and tiling.

Hey again guys, thanks.

@Koh Thank you for the feedback. I am no programmer, nor am I a designer. I don't really know what works, and doesn't work when putting a game together. I edited the HUD quickly to a more OOT style fashion(also dropped some colours to make it stand out more, but I imagine it doesn't make that much of a difference once it is floating over a dynamic background), how's that? Better or worse?

@Spritonic I would love to participate in creating an original game, but one too similar to Zelda would forever be labelled a ripoff. There was a game on Kickstarter that generated a ton of money, with re-drawn Minish Cap graphics. Seriously, it was just in a higher resolution, but everything was in the exact same style(and some of it borderline traced, even the individual brances on the trees), and it got so much hate it was ridiculous.

Read about that game here: http://kotaku.com/midora-is-basically-minish-cap-only-with-a-female-lead-1592389294

Thanks for the comments, guys :)

Well, a completely original game would be awesome. Create a genre now that´s a challenge haha!
Have you seen the game Evoland 2 (the second game is better than the first)? It´s an awesome game that brings lots of different genres into one game. It has an awesome story, awesome characters, awesome graphics... Its an awesome game! Have a look: http://www.evoland2.com/

I believe you can make a game that awesome with the proper team! You already have the graphics!

Hey again,

I've heard of that game, and love everything about it, though I've never had the pleasure of trying it out, myself. Good stuff :)

I like your environment tiles, especially the temple tiles. But I feel the Link, NPCs and HUD could really use some work. It looks like you got multiple styles going on.

Dude, those are really beautiful. I love the depth of color that they have, the environment pieces look very smooth and have a lot of dimension. I think Link looks great too, and he also seems like he'd look natural moving around the environment. The houses, to me, seem a little less integrated, but I think it's just the roof. Possibly because it's such a large area of a single color, it looks kind of flat, maybe boring, compared to the rest of the environment which has such depth and detail. You set a really high standard for yourself! ;P

I felt like the author should have probably been a little less blatant with the graphic ripoffs, especially the trees which were so similar but at the same time, it looked amazing. I really wanted to play it when I saw it, and had respect for the artist who was doing it. Because it looked freaking beautiful. They kinda stole Minish Cap's style, but they really nailed it. I feel for them, it'd be rough working on a project with a bunch of people hating at you :/

You sir has a great knowledge of breaking the tile pattern, I am impressed with what you were able to do with minimum tiles.

I prefer the hud in the GBA mockup example than the one in the rest of the images, the circle around the item looks bad, perhaps more AA might do it, another concern, outside tiles (the mockup of the village), the color require some tweaking it looks like an interior, the first time I saw it i thought it was a house inside a grass dungeon haha.. perhaps change the bricks and wall tiles into more brown color?  Also I love the minimum colors, are you using Arne's 16 color palette for this? Or what is the inspiration behind the colors?

PD: Start animating this:D?

Hello again!

Thank you for the kind posts, I'll see what I can do about everything...

@Shane
Yeah, I'll see what I can do about the HUD. It is really bothering me, because I want to keep it minimalistic, but since I detailed the sprites(I really want them to pop out of the background) I kind of locked myself into a bad situation, eh? Normally pixel art games are opposite to this, and have more detailed backgrounds with less detailed sprites, but I decided to go the other way(it'll be a !@#$% to animate). The Link is a really, really old design of mine, and I have a verson of him with less colours tattood on my arm, actually.

@Donotfeedthemax
Yeah, I haven't gotten around to texturing the houses yet, so they're really bland. I think this is even less detailed than ALttP, haha... I messed up when I drew the houses, since I can only tile them horizontally now, and I really didn't want to bother. since it's so late I just know I'll mess them up! I'll see about texturing the roofs tomorrow or so, or when I have time.

@Kren
The HUD is not anti-aliased at all. It is made out of single colours. I think I might ditch the bomb/arrow/key counter, and definitely the green and blue circles. They are 16x16 shapes, which is the same size as the item sprites(imagine placing a bomb over a circle, it'd just hide the circle completely!) All tiles are going to be recoloured at some point to allow for more variety(grey to brown, blue, red etc) in order to allow myself to be lazy and have them function for different areas, rather than drawing new tiles. It's a bit of a hassle though, because I haven't added a single colour yet, though I was really close to adding a lighter green, since the lightest greenish shade I have right now is a pure yellow - see (badly drawn)bushes. I do indeed intend on having the ground bricks be brown, too(see bushes again). As for the question regarding Arne's palette; No, I don't think I have ever used a premade palette. I chose all colours by eye, which actually do set me back a lot of the times since I never think all colours through. For example, right now I have a colour that acts as a dark purple, dark green and dark blue, and if I change it to a brighter blue, which I'd really like, it would mess up the greens and purples :( I'll have to see about tweaking all of the colours in photoshop or something...

Phew, that's a long message. Thanks for the kind replies guys! :)

Don't mind the shitty Zelda, I just threw her in there for fun

Started some desert tiles, which was simpler than I'd have thought to make. Also went ahead and worked more on the houses, so they tile really well, and I hope the simple ALttP solution with adding a stake in each corner does the job of conveying a less empty feeling, since I'm not sure how I'd go about texturing it without having it look too much like Minish Cap. Had to add another colour :(

Current OLD version:

Everything has undergone some minor fixes again, and some things have been added, so here's a new mockup with some slight updates:

I just love what you've got going on so much. The colors especially, and also the cheerful style. Feels like a game I'd really enjoy playing. Especially the way you can see through the water to underwater, it looks great.

It's cool to see the trees as a work in progress. The black lines are pretty jaggy, and the dark green space in between the combined trees seems particularly large, but it's going well :D

Hey thanks Max! Glad somebody appreciates the work I am putting myself through, haha...

Here's how the trees tile without some of the empty green-ness in-between. I also changed some blacks to a darker grey here and there, and made the spacing between the trunks 2px rather than 4px. The 2px black/grey lines are because the tree is 32px wide, with black on both ends, so it's difficult to avoid(Its symmetrical in true Zelda spirit, and everything is outlined as a way of defining this specific style):
v1
v2
v3(current)

Since the trees kinda bother me at the moment, I decided to add two frames to my Link. I am by no means an animator, though. This has to be the first animation of any kind I've done in the past 10+ years!

wow! really nice, the clean and cartoon style makes everything pop out, great job! I'm diggin' it.
I have two minor issues though:
I think the trees look really small compared to Link (or everything else for that matter). The other thing is the browns on the palette you have, they feel really saturated in comparison to the rest of the colors, which makes the brown things stand out a lot, even more so than Link.

So yeah, all in all, it's awesome to see a new Zelda style taking shape. Keep ' em coming :)

Hey Darklink! Thanks for the feedback dude. I have noticed the issue with the brown, myself. I ended up having to add an extra colour just for the sand, which was a real shame, as the others were too contrasted. I'll see if I can't adjust all of the levels in photoshop or something eventually.
As for the trees, yeah I see what you mean, haha! I'll have to add bigger ones afterwards. I kind of had Link's Awakening in my head when I drew them, but it completely slipped my mind that my Link sprite is 16x24 rather than 16x16, so it just sorta happened. I'll keep them in there and come up with 64x64 ones or so in the future. Thanks again, bro :)

Edit: I went ahead and did a quick re-colour to more satisfying browns on the tileset in the original post. The sprites and HUDs still use the old colour palette as there are stray colours here and there in them..

Edit 2: Aight, I went ahead and started the bigger trees. Haven't gotten around to fixing the vertical tiling yet, only the horizontal one. Any opinions?

Perhaps a bit too LttP with the 2px outline? Though, I did do the same on my houses...
