Wasn't "escaping into the world with a new never-before-exposed-to-the-light-of-day gun" enough of an opening for a sequel? Why do this to it?

IF VALVE WAS SMART THEY'D MAKE AN OPEN-WORLD PORTAL GAME SET IN NEW YORK CITY AFTER YOU ESCAPE THE LAB IN THE FIRST GAME. YOUR ONLY WEAPON IS A PORTAL GUN AND YOU JUST GET TO !@#$% WITH EVERYONE/EVERYTHING. IT'D BE ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE GTA CLONES AND POLICE CHASE YOU FOR PUTTING A PORTAL UNDER A BUS FULL OF CHILDREN AND THE OTHER PORTAL ON THE SIDE OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY. XD

I think they're just trying to tie it into the Half Life series, more than just references to Black Mesa.  The robot might have something to do with the Borealis or whatever in Episode 2.

 The Melancholy of GARuhi Suzumiya - you just assume Chell escapes and uses the portal gun to portal cakes into her house that she portaled the original owner into a volcano to get.

Kind of obvious something like this will happen, considering how the Borealis has the Aperture Science Logo on it.  And I know someone's going to jump in and say that it's not, so I'm coming prepared:

And Adrian Shepard is coming back... well, he should at least.  I guess the G-Man could potentially bring him back to use against Freeman.

Left 4 Dead 3 at E3 guys. We all know it'll happen, It'll have been nearly a year by then!
Seriously, Valve are starting to !@#$% me off with all this now, when the hell are they actually going to start working on Ep3? We don't need a sequel to a gimmicky game...

Turns out it might actually be hinting at Ep3...
