The difference between this and the DS Niek is that the DS came out when the Gamecube was still pretty high end.

The 3DS is coming out when Nintendo's console technology is nearly 10 years old. I say 10 years old because the Wii is essentially an enhanced gamecube with motion controls.

There's no reasons handhelds shouldn't have the Wii's graphical capabilities.

Also remember that Nintendo wants to keep things affordable for people, without them having a loss margin in the sales. This means that the technology will not be to high tech. Also why would Nintendo hold back info on processing power.

Just say, don't get your hopes up to high or you'll only get disappointed.

Sorry; I didn't see a mic on the pics of the 3DS I saw of it. Good to know that it has one though. ^_^

Using smaller versions of 10 year old technology wouldn't be cost effective? :P
The Wii was made to be affordable, hence the slightly upgraded GCN graphical capabilities.

I think it would be safe to say it wouldn't be cost effective to use 4 year old technology in a handheld (360/PS3 tech), but Wii tech should be just fine :P

I don't know how cost effective certain technologies are and I don't know how small the chips have to be with the touchscreen, 3 camera's, motion and gyro sensors, 3D slider, buttons, 3DS/DS cart slot, SD card slot and slide pad.

What I do know is that to make tech smaller it also makes it more pricier. But most important of all. The resolution that the 3DS produces (400x240 & 320x240) is a lot smaller than the Wii can produce.

Your resolution specs are a bit off on the top screen;

Top screen res is 800x480 with visible pixels of 400x240. The graphics will be much crisper on the top screen in comparison to the DS's graphics :P

No I'm not. From the nintendo E3 site:

Quote
Top Screen:
3.53-inch widescreen LCD display, enabling 3D view without the need for special glasses; with 800x240 pixel resolution (400 pixels are allocated for each eye to enable 3D viewing).

Meaning in effect it is 400x240

Ah I see; I thought the true res was doubled the "visible pixels", but that makes sense for the effect

PS2:

3DS:

Essentially it's a bit better than a PS2 if you put thought into it. 3DS doesn't have AA, sure, but AA takes up a lot of resources. 3DS also has Pixel Shaders and Bump mapping, something PS2 couldn't produce. Gamecube didn't have them either. Xbox 1 had Pixel Shader 1.0 if I recall.

3DS also uses resources to produce 3D. Now take away the 3D resources and it's even more powerful. These are also Tech Demos/Launch Titles basically. Every console started off a bit weak, then grew (PSX with FF7 -> FF9). Give it time, the 3DS will produce even better results.

That's a great comparison shot there, Porkchop. The 3DS does look mighty purtiful... :D
