Hey everybody!

I've been working on this game on and off for the past couple of years. The off time has been due to school, but I'll be graduating in 2 weeks so I'm picking it back up again and thought I'd share it with you guys.

I'm remaking The Legend of Zelda in LttP style. The game is being written in C++. I have a few screen shots posted on my website, so check it out:

http://www.errornix.com/staticpages/index.php?page=moh

It's a new page so there's not a lot of content there yet, but check back again soon!

Not many screenshots... so, how far is this completed?

You haven't said much... it looks more developed than Zelda 1, but then again... I'm all for remakes of the first games, but will there be any new content? Is this Zelda 1 in ALttP graphics, or is it Zelda 1 with ALttP graphics, different dungeons, more complex puzzles, plot, etc etc?

It looks okay, but the screen resolution is massive for a 2D Zelda game. Make the resolution about half of that and you should be okay.

I suppose I should have given a few more details...

It's tough to say exactly how close to completion it is, but here's a quick rundown of the games status:
-The game engine it self is finished, there is still plenty of tweaking and optimizations to be made, but the system is there.
-I have nearly all of the sprites/tiles, except for some of the bosses (for which I may need the help of you guys)
-A little more than half of Link's items are coded and finished.
-A little less than half of the enemies are coded and finished. (No bosses are finished)
-I still need to add a save game feature. This will probably be one of the last things that I do.
-There are still non-gameplay things that need to be finished, such as an opening sequence, rolling credits, etc.
-I have to add animated backgrounds (moving water, those dancing flowers, etc)

What's different in MoH:
-Obviously the biggest change to the game is the graphics.
-Gameplay more closely matches ALttP as well. For example, Link can move diagonally, perform the sword spin, pick up and throw objects (including bombs).
-In LoZ, the camera only moved whenever the screen changed. In MoH, there are areas where the camera follows Link, but it performs the "classic scroll" when he reaches the edge of the map, like in ALttP.
-The overworld is now divided into different regions, and each region has it's own music, rather than playing the same theme throughout the entire overworld. Likewise, the dungeons now have their own individual themes, both musically and graphically.

About the screen resolution:
It used to be half the size that it is now, but I really wasn't happy with it. I much more prefer the way it is now because it really makes the entire overworld feel MUCH larger and it gives me a little more freedom when creating maps because I don't have to try to cram things into a smaller area. You might think this would cause a problem with having to travel a longer distance, but Link moves fairly quickly, so I don't think that will be a problem.

Seriously though, big resolutions with small sprites look bad and unprofessional. Its cool to hear you're so far into production, but your game will look so much better at a normal resolution. Try 320x224, the Sega Genesis screen size.

Well, I suppose it would be possible to make the resolution optional. I'll definitely consider it.

Well, right now there's a lot of open space and it looks repetitive.
Still, I've always wanted to see TLoZ with the ALttP engine. I hope this is as good as it sounds :)

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by sliding.

Ah, so a nice engine for Link? Good. I hated the engine in LoZ. Of course, I hate just about everything in LoZ, hence my love for remakes.

So, will enemies be good, too? I imagine Moblins will need a complete reworking. I'd love it if they worked like the Knights in ALttP.
I do see why the bosses haven't been done yet. I tend to do bosses after I do a dungeon, and they can be harder than alot of enemies in ALttP style.

And the different areas sound good, too. They're use could be quite beneficial to the game.

If it's in C++, it'll work on Vista.

HAHA!  That's definitely a cool idea. I don't know anything about DS development though, so don't expect it.

Yeah, I'm definitely expecting it to work with Vista. I just didn't want to explicitly say that it would, just in case.

By the way guys, thanks for supporting this project. I wasn't exactly sure how you would all feel about doing a remake instead of an original game. I've actually gotten some pretty rotten emails about it in the past.

On that note, already been done, remakes suck, etc.

Neat, I'll try the demo on my Vista machine, see what happens. Any chance of opening the source up to the world?

It looks ok, but Z1 remakes have been done to death, does "Zelda Classic" (the program) ring a bell?

Yeah port this to DS, "i will cream EVERYWHERE".
I'm sure this is possible with C++ without rewriting your code.

sliding is when you walk on a diagonal cliff/barrier and the player slides with it
