I need some inspiration to counter those February blahs.
Help me make a game, ZFGC!

Here's what we know right this minute. More points will be added as we develop the idea.
  • It will be a platformer.
  • It will be made in GM.
  • Our intrepid hero is a samurai badger.
  • The goal is to collect a finite number of mushrooms.
  • The setting is a remote island that acts as an intermediary point for black-market mushroom smuggling.
  • The mushroom smugglers will be bird pirates. Other animals will play parts, such as mammal gangsters, crocodiles, and so forth.
  • There will be _X_ mushrooms to collect.
  • There will be _X_ distinct areas of the island.
  • The island will consist of (a) world/areas/levels in a style similar to Super Mario World.
Fill in those blanks!

The setting (added on to what Mammy and Cypras said): A remote island. This island is planned to be used as a midway point for smuggling Cypras' illegal and highly addictive mushrooms overseas. The massive shipment of mushrooms has already arrived at the midway point. The Samurai Badger must use his awesome skills to make sure that none of the mushrooms get shipped off of the island.

(if the setting/story sucks, I do apologize. it's about 3:10 AM right now)

The crime lord for the Cypras Mushroom Smuggling is on the island, (he's a panda with a gold tooth and a suit... duh, crime lord) and you have to break into his HQ at some point and rescue the mushrooms he has locked up there!

Also, I'd like to see how this turns out xD

Alright, this sounds fantastic so far. Now, let's decide who or what the smugglers are. Let's also impose a couple limits on development - for now it's ideal to have a goal to shoot for, and there's nothing stopping us from increasing these limits when we've reached them.

  • The mushroom smugglers will be _description of the smugglers_.
  • There will be _X_ mushrooms to collect.
  • There will be _X_ distinct areas of the island.

the group of smugglers is leaded by a gorilla called BaBoo, but mainly hyenas work for him. some of these hyenas will be carrying wooden boxes containing mushrooms.

  • The mushroom smugglers will be _bird pirates sometimes visited and aided by mamal gangsters._.
  • There will be _7 Golden mushrooms and 84 normal (3 per level)_ mushrooms to collect.
  • There will be _7_ distinct areas with _4 subdivisions_ of the island.

There's another good point to add. Choose from the following.
  • This game has levels and worlds.
  • This game is an open-world Metroid-type game.

Or, suggest another option.

By levels and worlds, do we mean a Super Mario World approach? Or do we mean a Mario 64 approach where there are objectives to complete in each level, and you access each level multiple times?

I was more thinking of the good old classic Super Mario Bros (NES edition) approach.

So if I'm understanding correctly, players would see a total of how many mushrooms they got at the end of the game, and the game would have no save feature? And the golden mushrooms would be an accomplishment similar to Chaos Emeralds in Sonic?

I'd perfer to see it like Super Mario 64.

I must admit it would be pretty awesome playing a samurai badger collecting mushrooms on an island with loads of bird pirates sometimes visited and aided by mamal gangsters.

I'll flesh out the choices a bit.

  • SMB style: Levels are differentiated from each other by worlds and numbers. Each level has mushrooms in it, and each world has a golden mushroom. Progress is not saved; the player is encouraged to play the game repeatedly and receive a higher score upon beating the game.
  • SMW style: Levels are individual dots on a world map. Levels are replayable, and the game keeps track of which mushrooms you have collected in each level. Worlds would end with boss fights(?) after which you receive a golden mushroom. Progress can be saved; the player is encouraged to repeat levels and collect every mushroom in the game.
  • SM64 style: There are a number of worlds, and each world has several objectives which reward you with a mushroom upon finishing them. Progress can be saved; the player is encouraged to collect every mushroom in the game.
  • I'll suggest another style as well: The Great Cave Offensive from Kirby Super Star, with Metroid touches. The world is split into distinct regions, which have various mushrooms to find and collect. Our hero would get additional abilities to aid in exploration. Progress can be saved at save points; the player is encouraged to explore every nook and cranny of the island to find every mushroom.

I'll update the first post with the details about the smugglers when we've had a few more opinions about it, since it is a fairly big point.

I think the Great Cave Offensive idea would be really cool.

So, smugglers... I'm picturing piratey lookin storks, a big, green crocodile type, and a few mebe beaver or possum/rat mammals.

Probably 50 or so mushrooms, with 5 or 10 goldens, which unlock stuff or whatnot.

Most likely 5 Overworld areas, you know, Mushroom Kingdom, Gritzy Desert, etc. Each one probably has 10 mushrooms distributed, and 1 golden. Then, after those overworld areas, there's the "Base of Operations". Each, save the Base, will probably have 4 subdivisions.

I'm just popping in to mention BADGERS ARE FRIKKIN' AWESOME!!!!!!

The Great Cave Offensive idea is great, reminds me more of another awesome Kirby game, The Amazing Mirror (my personal favourite Kirby game).  I kinda like 30, so that's the mushroom number I suggest per level, with 6 of them being the special kind.
