Who has a steam account? And what have you got on it? Would be intresting to setup some large matchs against zfgc players.

Updates / What Changes Do You Want?
« on: March 08, 2009, 04:29:09 pm »
Simple question really. There are a lot of members active here, but few posting. Presumably because you either don't like the way its run, or as some other people say "because your are scared we would ban you for posting anything off-topic".

Given that both I and 4Sword are now essentially the owners of this site, I think its a good time to ask what you want us to do with it.

Other Projects / [Completed] Steam Achievement Generator
« on: February 22, 2009, 10:08:12 pm »
It's a generator that generates steam achievement images? What more do you want to know?

Basically its just like the zillions of other ones that exists out there on the interwebz, this one just has support for a lot of games, unlike the others which generally have support for just one;

Entertainment / Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonda
« on: February 16, 2009, 08:27:56 pm »
*sigh* This is the last we're going to see of futurama by the looks of it. Shame really, was an awesome series while it lasted.

Anyhow, anyone else seen this movie? It's not officially released until next week, but there are plenty of uploads of it out there if you really want to get your hands on it.

Pretty good movie overall, though the story did seem random, shallow and out-of-character at times.

Other Projects / Sprite Sheet Maker
« on: January 04, 2009, 12:42:31 am »
Explanation

Basically sprite sheet maker is a program I wrote for my own use for one of my projects (written over the amazing time frame of about an hour u_u). I've decided to clean it up and post it here.

Basically it allows you to take poorly formatted sprite sheets and run them through this program and produce well laid out sprite sheets capable of being easily imported into most game engines.

Blah, blah, blah. Simply put I needed to convert a bunch of sprite sheets from some well known websites, none of them were laid out very well so I decided to write this little tool rather than spend ages ripping all of them.

The tool is crude, and its slow, and its far from complete (new version soon hopefully, hate the current algorithem) but it does the job I need it for. Perhaps you may find use of it *shrugs*.

Next thing I'm going to do if I can get the chance is to change the algorithm (my god its slow u_u), and to add a window where you can change the index of each frame, as well as making slight positioning changes (saves opening paint and doing it XD).

Example

An example of its use might be if you had a sheet like this;

You could remove the text and general crap, to get this kind of sheet;

Then run it through the program to get something like this;

+ A few positioning tweeks and you have a sprite sheet thats easily importable into a game engine.

This tool is pretty simple to use. All you do is drag an image onto the
left hand panel and the tool will try and process it into a more game
friendly format.

At the moment this tool is still very early in development and will
probably crash now and again. I apologise for this, all I can say is you'll
have to bear with my while I fix the problems.

Tips on use

 - Remove text or exterenuous data from the image first.
   If you don't do this the algorithem may pick up individual text
   letters as frames. You really don't want this to happen as it may
   cause very long progress times, and very messed up sprite sheets.

 - Keep images small
   The bigger the image, the longer its going to take to progress! Keep all
   images as small as possible to keep everything going smoothly!

 - Try and keep all things on one row
   This isn't neccessary, but it helps fix indexing problems in the final sprite sheet.

There are a number of currently know problems, mainly;

 - Very slow
   This is due to the inefficient segmenting algorithem the system
   currently uses. I'm currently working on implementing a faster
   more efficient one.

 - Emitted frames may not be in the correct order.
   This is simply a problem on the side of the computer. Deciding exactly
   which frames should go where is hard to determine, especially if they
   are not lined up in the original image. The program will try as hard
   as it can to organise them in a top-left to bottom-right grid but occassionaly
   you may have to reorganise some yourselves.

 - Problems with indexed color images (palleted images)
   This is due to the method I'm using to read data from images. This should
   be fixed soon.

 - Problems with artifacts around a frame (dust, particles, .etc)
   This is a problem with the algorithem currently in use. If the
   artifact dosen't touch the main body of the frame it will be considered
   a different frame by the algorithem. I'm currently implementing a
   "tolerance threshold" into the system so it will accept artifacts within
   a certain range of a frame.

 - Progress bar may hang at 100% for a few minutes
   This is due to some extra calculations which may take time but aren't
   factored into the progress bar. Should be fixed in the next release.

Entertainment / Call Of Duty 4 Server
« on: January 02, 2009, 07:20:54 pm »
I had some fun today setting up a hardcore tdm server for call of duty 4 on my server pc today.  Seems to be running ok, been playing with about 6-7 people at a time and they all seem to have a steady connection and lowish ping.

So if anyone wants to have a game (and preferably lives in the uk ;)) you can connect to it by opening the console (press the key below escape) at the game menu (you may have to enable it in the options->input menu) of cod4 and typing "connect infiniserver.dyndns.org"

With luck if the server gets at least slightly more popular it should appear in the server browser so the above won't be neccessary.

Other Projects / Fusion Game Engine - Source Code Release
« on: December 06, 2008, 10:52:13 pm »
Not quite sure which board I should post this under, so I'm going to put it here. Staff - Feel free to move it if you feel its better somewhere else.

Anyhow, as some of you may know I developed a game engine a year or so back under the name "Fusion". I used this to develop a number of in-house projects at binary phoenix, the main ones you may know of are Crystalline River and LOZ: Vengeance. The engine was abandoned a year or so ago as I felt that the actual coding in the engine was both very shoddy and rushed, and needed to be totally rewritten. Rather than just deleting this project from my harddrive I've decided to release the entire source code for it and for the LOZ: Vengeance game in a hope that some of you may find it useful.

You can compile it under Visual Studio 2008. Be aware however that there are a number of problems with the engine, due to it being abandoned in mid development. The most pressing problems are a horribly inefficient scene graph / graphics engine, memory leaking, and a few unfinished features in the scripting language. I don't intend to fix any of these, if you wish to though, please go right ahead.

Be aware that this release is a more or less copy/paste from my development directory with unneccessary things removed. There are no manuals, not instructions, and a hell of a lot of rude comments. Have fun none the less. And please respect the long hours of work put into this by abiding by the license, as well as not distributing this project elsewhere.

Anyhow without further ado, heres the download link;

Updates / [Community Administrator 12/2008] Candidate Application
« on: November 24, 2008, 01:06:04 am »
Do you wish to be considered as a candidate for the next administrator election for a term of 2 months? Make a notification in here and we will enter you into the next election. Be aware however we are imposing several limits on who can enter (mainly for security reasons);

1. No previous bans (though if they are only short term (a week or less) we will probably overlook them).
2. Have not been forceably removed or fired from a staff position.
3. Must be at least 16 years of age.
3. You must not have been elected twice already.
4. Must have been a member of this community for 4 months or more.

Please don't enter this unless your serious or you will most likely end up getting removed from your position if you are elected. Currently we will most likely remove you for the following reasons;

1. Duration of your term is up (2 months).
2. Inactivity for 10 or more days, without a good reason.
3. Gross misconduct (breaching any staff rules, forum rules or ToS).
4. Impeachment

The current election process is as follows;

1. Start of election
2. Campaign time (Setup like the character contests, 2 weeks long).
3. General populus vote (1 week long).

Anyway thats about it. If you wish to be considered please post here.

Graphics / Zombie Game?
« on: November 17, 2008, 01:05:35 am »
Right guys, I just feel like designing a quick top-down zombie survival shoot-em-up (waaay to much l4d) with totally over the top effects (gibs, bullet traces, etc, etc) :P. I wrote a lot of the base engine over the last few days. The main problem atm is it looks like !@#$%, not even got any animations for PC sprite (been spriting everything myself). Don't want to do any more work unless I get someone willing to do some spriting work for it.

Its not a huge task, as its going to be very short (mainly just a see-how-long-you-can-surive kind of game), mainly doing some sprites for the following;

Player Character (Animated)
Few Enemies (Animated)
Tileset (Nothing complex)
HUD
Pickups
Weapons

I'm hoping to do it in a cartooney, over the top kind of way, if you think you can sprite in a style that would fit that, then awesome, contact me. Resolution is 320x240 if that gives you an idea.

As you'll probably notice I added a dig button on the project board topics. Please don't abuse it.

Its not necessarily permanent, I'm just playing around, finding out how well it works.
