Ill enter. I might end up doing a Zelda 1 remake, or something else,so dont put anything down yet.
Also, using Zelda 1 as an example, if I made it in PAlib, could it still !@#$% as old school if the menu was the bottom screen?
Also,(using the example from before) If I replaced the graphics with BS Zelda and updated music with floafs remakes, would that be legal? (In other words, do I need to make my own GFX and sound for New School?)Now if you did it BS style, then I would consider it still Old School since BS Zelda was a real game(though not in the states).
~LynkW-Now more annoying than a Lawyer.
Probably because they dont plan the contests ahead of time.Actually we do.
Quick thing, though.Because this competition is TFS's idea, he dosen't have any money to give. Had it been an admins decision money may have been available. I'll see what can be done.
Why is it that for the competitions that require little talent related to what ZFGC is *supposed* to be about (games development), you give out awards that aren't worth DICK, yet for things like effects, you give out awards that actually hold monetary value? :/
I'll probably be doing new school, FYI.He's got a point. Make it like, 1970 at LEAST <.< That way I can remake Adventure xD
Also, why 1985-1999 (I get the 1999 part, just not the 1985)? Tic-Tac-Toe was ran graphically on computers in 1952

:)
Pong was released in 1972, and The Galaxy Game a year before that...and Pacman was released in 1980. A lot of the games you suggested are out of the allowed area.
Pong was re-released on many consoles throughout the end of the 80s and the 90s.I'll probably be doing new school, FYI.He's got a point. Make it like, 1970 at LEAST <.< That way I can remake Adventure xD

How faithfully do these have to be made, by the way? Are we free to, for example, recreate the game from a different perspective, and with an updated engine? (For example, recreating Pool of Radiance in a top-down view, rather than using a first-person style, and using 3.5 edition Dungeons & Dragons rules behind things?)
New School | - you Must stick with to the theme and style of the game you have chosen
- your focus is to take an old game and give it a face lift. Update the graphics/sprites.
Give it some pretty eye-candy effects. Better music, etc.
- A plus is to also build upon the orginal game's gameplay. EXAMPLE: Add stomping to the
original Super Mario Bros. if that had been your choice.
I only mentioned the dating because a lot of the games he suggested were released before 1985 (I didn't think re-releases would count) which I thought would have meant something would have needed changing somewhere... :)

I remember some company releasing one of the old first person AD&D games in a more Baldur's Gate style.
Alright, no 3d-2d conversions, right? What about 2d-3d?Depends, what game were you thinking about? and if so, it would be a New School category entry.
If I wanted to redo a dungeon from say, Link's Awakening in 3d, would that not be allowed?Alright, no 3d-2d conversions, right? What about 2d-3d?Depends, what game were you thinking about? and if so, it would be a New School category entry.

*A fully functional level shows everything the original game had. If it is an adventure game(IE Zelda), you must either have a fairly good sized overworld or re-create a dungeon.*can you be more specific? should I just make a random dungoen with 3 items working, a few enemies, and sword?
Random...no. You would have to pick one of the dungeons.Since I love to ask questions:Quote*A fully functional level shows everything the original game had. Kind of late, but !@#$% it, I'm in. I'm probably going to go old school and recreate Contra 3. I would do Demon's Crest, but I couldn't bear to work on something like that.

It is just a modified Megaman X meets Castlevania type game. Since you only need one level, you could do the opening/graveyard level.

When I said, "One fully functional level." I meant a level from the actual game itself.

Since you are doing Zelda 1 I would say just the few screens leading to Level 1.Random...no. k, and how big would I need to make a part of the overworld if I did that instead?
So thats 8 screens. Ill probably do that, and include the bow and sword.(and the oktorocs) is this ok?Yeah. Just remember, though, the more effort, the better the score will probably be.
Now if you did it BS style, then I would consider it still Old School since BS Zelda was a real game(though not in the states).
New School in that situation would be LttP graphics or MC style...BS Zelda was a legit game hence I could not consider it New School even if you copied the original LOZ with just a BS Zelda face plate.
Is this thing only scored? or are there gonna be votes like in COMP4(Effects)Given that voting was abused last time, its probably going to be a mixture.
For this much work and stuff... that's not much of a prize.Well, besides not having much money, I really do not know what you ZFGCers want.
Not everyone here owns a Wii... but, I suppose the majority of people on zfgc do. In all honesty, I think $10, a pat on the back and some rupees is worth it.For this much work and stuff... that's not much of a prize.Well, besides not having much money, I really do not know what you ZFGCers want.
Since it this has Old School in it and New School, what about Wii Points?
You guys could use the Wii Points to either buy the classics or get the Wii Ware.

Dont most people here use the homebrew channel and the WAD thing?[/quote]
Personally, Im fine with ANY prize. This conest gave me something to do :p
Also,

Edit: God damn it, I cant choose the GFX style :(QuoteNow if you did it BS style, then I would consider it still Old School since BS Zelda was a real game(though not in the states).

So even if I had a different soundtrack, and some different gameplay elements, I still couldnt use (partially edited)BS Zelda GFX?
Heh, I'm still designing my actual game, but I've begun work on the basic engine. I'm building in in C++ pretty much from the ground up.Yes. The only Linux I have is Knoppix, but it's a LiveCD not on an actual hard drive. -_-
Actually, I've been meaning to ask something. I'm programming this on my Linux laptop, and so am using the X Window System at the moment. Will I have to port this to Windows for the contest? Because I could do that, it shouldn't take too long...just best to get a heads up now rather than later :)
..But it said we could use ANY lib or language....AND you will obviously be judged on your choice as well.
I'll do this one :DSo, New School then?
I'll remake Kirby's Adventure for NES. Hah I just realized that GBA game was a remake, but I'll do it in a different way.
I wish I could enter... I would meet both criteria, had my account not been mysteriously deleted. :huh:Probably because your account was inactive and pruned. I'm sure you'll be let it anyway.
Hmm... can I do the Special Stages from Sonic 3? Technically, it was its own game when Sonic and Knuckles locked on with Sonic 1...Yeah...old school or new? You made a choice a while back to do a new school project.

You going to keep it new school?
Also, good luck with the Lost Vikings, Infini, although I thought number 2 was better.Actually, I'm almost done ^.^, engine and editor are pretty much done, just need to map out the maps and sort out the intro scene. 2 probably was better, but I have more nastalgia for 1.
Infinitus won; trust me on this one XD
D: his remake kicks some hardcore ass right now
Makes no difference anyhow :P. I'm on staff so I auto-forefit if I win.Infinitus won; trust me on this one XD

Admin bias. :( NO MORE.
You better have the most awesome final boss music in the history of final bosses in it! (The one from that game of course!)Here so you can get off my back already!
Also, REPLY# 100! w00t!
I still have two weeks left, I'm not gonna rush. But then again, mine will suck. Ah well.10 days. Always good to rush yourself anyway, means that you don't get lazy and end up having to do all the work at the last moment.
...Actual submissions must be PM to me by August 1st. Voting will end August 14th. ...
I'll probably get last, but it's the effort that counts, right?See, I said it!
Wow I feel good about this, I actually finished most of what I planned on having. I did put an ungodly amount of effort into it though, lol it will be a while until I feel like game deving again XDYeh I know how you feel, I used to much time on mine to.
I really do not care about the contest, I just don't like putting code out there that is not as good as it could be. I like to constantly refine and streamline my code; but yeah, my engine has enough of the overworld feel lol.Oh get off your high horse, I'm sure yours is going to be leagues above mine. ;)

If anyone gives me over a 3 or 4 out of 10, I will personally slap them. I mean, I put effort in...but uh...not very much. In fact, I said "screw it" so I gave it a funny introduction.
Hell, I'm sure yours is going to be leagues above mine, Kylink! If so, then 4Swords' will be lightyears above mine!Nope, I bet you 50 rupees that mine will get a lower score. In fact, you don't even have to give me anything if you're wrong. If I get a better score than you, I will give you 50 rupees.
Owwwh, we're doing bets now are we? Awesome. I will give anyone 100,000 rupees who can take a screenshot of the ending sequence of my game :D
Whole first world. All the elements are there though to do the other worlds, it just requires someone to rip the graphics and map the areas.Owwwh, we're doing bets now are we? Awesome. I will give anyone 100,000 rupees who can take a screenshot of the ending sequence of my game :D
Did you do the whole game, or just some of it?
The original or your version? My version, my one has an original, crappy ending :D.
*gets a save state ready...*
And Kylink, mine is a horrible OW demo that doesn't even move fluidly. Yours is...?
