*splashes around like a Dolphin*

You remind me, why hadn't the GCN just stuck with it's codename?  I'd have preferred the nintendo Dolphin to the nintendo Gamecube.  This change I don't think was so bad in comparison.

Honestly though, I quite like the name.  It's simple, unique, and interesting.

signed, and spread.  Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I agree that it'd be a horrible thing to lose network neutrality.

Here it is boys and girls, the most expensive PC ever:
STARTING at $9930

Who would pay that much for something that in a year or two won't cost more than standard computers today?

Also, I doubt it's the most expensive PC ever, seeing as back in the day, those crappy old macs went for $10 - 15 K. I've seen ads. It's laughable.

That's cheap by that time's standard  ;)

I also remember using stuff like This,  this, this and as far back as I remember my avy, this.  The sig changed a lot more often :P

Anything by Dell ensures it's gonna be packed with several Dell labelled programs 'powered by dell' which will slow the computer down immensely, several of their own size specs for hardware so they an try to make you only buy from them, and of course a bomb inside that will explode if you start shopping for a new pc from anywhere but Dell on the internet (don't test this theory, the things I've seen...*shiver*).  Doesn't look like it has the best ventilation it could either, which is stupidity when you get to the point of 4 gpx cards, that much ram, and 2 HDs.  Components'll wear fast too (it's a Dell, they build their pcs expecting you to upgrade through them in the next few years).

Four of those Geforce things will run any game on the highest settings, with beautiful graphics

Some games only run on ati cards, for example Thief 2: The Metal Age (a great game at that)

Better off building your own, or choosing a different company.

Entertainment / Re: Recommend a band
« on: April 25, 2006, 10:13:28 pm »
Since everyone else is posting rock, metal, and progressive, I'll vary it a bit with some Ecto bands (I will add a few of the aformentioned though  ;D )

I'll post links to band info elsewhere if some other page explains enough.

The Jazz Mandolin Project

Splashdown: I'm really into some of the songs made by Splashdown.  Something interesting is that when the band broke up, they made their music free to share online, even their unreleased album blueshift.  Almost all of their songs can be downloaded here.  Their music varies, so one or two songs don't reveal how different the band can be at times.  Also, if anyone's played Amplitude for the PS2, Melissa Kaplan (the band's singer) offered her vocal talent for "Shades of Blue" in the game.

Kyuss: A song I highly recommend by them is Demon Cleaner.

Threat Signal: Pretty good metal band.

Fear Factory: Pretty GREAT metal band.  Their songs tend to be in three different styles, depending on the album usually.  There's a hardcore (and their original) approach to metal, remixes that they do of their own songs every now and then, and then they have an awesome combination of the hardcore style with emphasized vocals, which changes it a lot.  For the first style, I'd recommend H-K (Hunter-Killer) from their album Demanufacture.  For the second (which is my least favorite, to be honest), try Genetic Blueprint from their remix album of Demanufacture, titled Remanufacture.  And for the third style (definitely my favorite), the vast majority of their new album Transgression will do, but I highly recommend Supernova and Moment of Impact.

Refused: Fantastic hardcore punk band.  The album I'd recommend from them is without a doubt, The Shape of Punk to Come[/url]

The Dandy Warhols: Very interesting band.  Claimed to be rock, but sort of different from traditional rock I'd say.  Worth checking out.  The styles in their various albums vary greatly, one or two songs of their are available on their myspace

I'll post more some other time.

Debates / Re: Overuse of guitar in music?
« on: April 25, 2006, 04:20:45 am »
Hmm, the guitar is a great instrument. But its a lot of the same usually.

But theres a difference between electrical and acoustic.

And theres an interesting medium between both when you use an electric guitar not hooked up to anything.  For some reason, I like the sound of it quite a lot and wish more songs used it on occasion (such as the song Hollow by Stutterfly, which blends it with metal in the opening, but unfortunetly doesn't seem to use it much at all after that)

I only have Invisible War, the sequel.  What I can say about Invisible War is that it's an incredible game, but has serious problems when it comes to even getting a level to load without crashing to desktop (luckily, a fanmade patch was released for this, although tedious to find), and especially with slowdown.  It's my opinion that they didn't seem to give any regard to optimizing graphics, as Half Life 2 and other games with better graphics run faster on my pc than it does (and there are apparently huge problems with it crashing on a few xboxes as well).  As far as gameplay however, it's extremely fun.  People have told me the original doesn't have so many problems running, so I hope to find and play it someday.

Heh, you people and your ketchup.  I much prefer BBQ or steak sauce with my fries (yes, I'm weird) and don't like ketchup all that much.

Well, after reading the entire thing, I'd say that while he does bring up a lot of interesting points, there are many active examples today of non-clones, games standing on their own imaginative ground, games that are made with less production values but still hailed amongst us actual gamers.  For example, the title Guild Wars was created by Ex Blizzard employees.  Thats one bit of proof that some developers still have it in them to take the risks necessitated for the cycle of industry.  What worries me personally about the next-gen systems is simply the fact that people are expecting more and more.  Well, ok, you have better hardware, and at the same time you have even more complicated teams for game production.  It is hitting a technical roof, not because of technology reaching a limit, but because those with creative, original concepts will no longer be easily able to present those ideas.  Indie Console Developers, from the perspective I see it, are fading away.  Even in the last generation of consoles, you saw unique concepts and creativity injected into the industry.  The most singled game that comes to my mind was Max Payne, which introduced Bullet Time.  Max Payne and GTA III effectively projected Rockstar to the 'industry giant' style fo business practice.  And I saw a lot more surprise about Max Payne when it was first presented than I did about GTA3, because it introduced something unseen to the industry.   As development costs go up for systems, it'll offset and cripple the ability for those who haven't worked in-dev before to introduce such new concepts.  The PC Market however will increase in diversity the way I see it, for several reason, the most important being availability.  Simple games, concepts, ideas and newer ways of viewing games as a form of entertainment, media, and art remain easier to create on the PC, modern examples show this very well.

Entertainment / Re: Silent Hill *MY REVIEW - Spoilers inside*

Nice review of the movie, though a bit giveaway-ish of quite a bit of the plot (yes, I'm aware of your spoiler warning, I just think theres a bit many of them for the audience you're writing for, considering that you're explaining a substantial amount of the plot).

I'd like to note for those who've played the game (because I saw it a few hours ago), there are changes, but they aren't that bad.  Expecially considering that the equivalent to the opening scene of the game (backalley, etc) is perfectly executed, even the camera angles match those in the game to the tee.  The movie itself is extremely well made IMO.  For those curious about how biased I may be adding these facts, I was rather critical while watching the movie, because the game is definitely among my favorite of all time.
