BioWare technical producer Derek French has said that the PC versions of both Mass Effect and Spore will make use of copy protection that will require online validation every ten days to continue working.

"After the first activation, SecuROM requires that [Mass Effect PC] re-check with the server within ten days (in case the CD Key has become public/warez'd and gets banned)," said French in a post on the BioWare forums.

If customers do not come online after ten days, the game will cease to function. "After 10 days a re-check is required before the game can run," added French.

The check is run when users activate the game's executable file, with the first re-check coming within "5 days remaining in the 10 day window."

According to French, Maxis' Spore will also make use of the same scheme: "[Electronic Arts] is ready for us and getting ready for Spore, which will use the same system."

French also noted that the online requirement will be clearly labeled on the games' packaging.

Ways hackers can get around this...

1. Server emulation
2. Removal of SecuROM
3. Bypass of SecuROM
4. Patch to make SecuROM always report a success.

There is always a way.

Wait Spore's got this crap too? !@#$% man. I knew Mass Effect had it but that's not a big deal since I can just get it for 360. Spore on the other hand... I may have to pirate it just to get around DRM, and who knows if it'll work right pirated.

ok, I'm not really part of the whole pirating crowd, so correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be possible to get a key-code online, save it to a text document or write it down, and then just use that everytime it asks?
Umm, online validation... that means it stores the keycode in a database and checks if it's on a blacklist.

Yeah, and if people don't have internet?

!@#$%.. I thought Maxis was above this. Oh well, I will not lose faith in Spore being the greatest game ever.

What's gonna happen when the apocalypse happens and I'm the only one left and there won't be any internet? How on Earth am I going to play Spore and Mass Effect?! Those jerks!

All jokes aside this is honestly a joke (whoops I lied about the jokes) If they'd spend half as much time in game development as they do coming up with dumb ideas for how to keep people from pirating their software for an extra week, we would already have virtual reality.

Not only do secuROM schemes always suck, they always manage to !@#$% you off after the game's long gone.  What happens when the servers go down and secuROM can't check?  Your game is worthless, completely and utterly worthless.  First they make System Shock 2 a !@#$% to run on XP onward and now this ><
