Alright, I just got Oblivion, but I can't play it, even on lowest settings!

The minimum specs are:

    * Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows XP 64-bit
    * 512MB System RAM
    * 2 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent processor
    * 128MB Direct3D compatible video card
    * and DirectX 9.0 compatible driver;
    * 8x DVD-ROM drive
    * 4.6 GB free hard disk space
    * DirectX 9.0c (included)
    * DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
    * Keyboard, Mouse

I have:

Windows XP Pro
640MB Ram
Pentium 4 Processor 2.39ghz
256MB Nvidia GeForce FX 5500
DirectX 9
50 GB hard drive space left

So what the hell? Why is it so slow it's not even playable?

I have the latest video card drivers from the offical Nvidia site.
The official Oblivion site said it supports GeForce FX cars.

So...

Just because you have a little more than what the minimum requirements call for doesn't mean you can actually run it well enough for it to be playable. Really the minimum requirements are only there to tell you what you need to have so your computer doesn't kill itself.

My verdict? Go 512.

Hear the haunting words (They'll find you alone)
lost children with no heart are crying (Turning their hearts into stone)
and you're the lost mother they're calling
Go now, run and hide (seek more than vengeance)
I hear them crying at night (your pain is their satisfaction)
outside when the planets are falling (for the rest of time)
They want to feel and know you hear them (Go now, run and hide)

Okay, with those specs you'll have to do a lot of optimising. You'll have to turn off grass and trees, use it in the lowest resolution possible as well as other things.

Did all that, still lags like hell.

I have the same graphics card, it just isn't enough.  Playing inside towns is okay once you the settings down.  Playing in the overworld is hell though, damn near impossible really.  I would suggest using Oldblivion (http://www.oldblivion.com/).  It makes the game manageable for systems that do not have the proper amount of power to run this beast of a game.

Dude, upgrade your system.  You can get much better graphics cards for pretty cheap these days, and get some more RAM.  It doesn't have anything to do with this game, but get another Harddrive as well! (you can get like 500 gb for $100 nowadays :D)

WAT.

In the install directory is a .ini file. This contains all the settings used by the game, including a lot of graphical settings not available through other means.

I plan on getting a whole new computer all together...

I've seen like really really nice ones for like $600.

2.4ghz dual-core
315mb graphics card (or some !@#$%)
2gb ram
250gb harddrive
etc.

Or better yet, leave the DEFAULT SETTINGS FILE ALONE and edit the one in My Documents/My Games.

There's such a double standard about religion in the modern world. Catholics can gather, wear white robes, and say "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti" and be considered normal.

But if my friends and I gather, wear black robes, and say  "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn", we're considered cultists.

I usually edit both and just make a back-up :P Meh, I'm used to/prefer Morrowind anyway, as I can't stand Oblivion as an RPG, because it's not a !@#$% RPG. It's an Open-Ended FPS with swords. It's as much of an RPG as Crackdown is XD

I guarantee you that this so-called 315MB graphics card is some integrated !@#$%. Either way, you're going to have to buy a new one. Personally, I use an ATI Radeon X1650 Pro 512MB AGP 8x, and I could run Oblivion on the highest setting prior to it pretty much going through a wood chipper. (I plan on upgrading again to a 1GB if I can find one. Perhaps I can use both my 512MB and a 1GB in unison.)

*rolled up newspaper* no.  That's nowhere near good for it's price.  Go to cyberpowerpc.com and look at the mega specials that're priced around $600.  Most of em have a Geforce 8500 GT, one of em ($55 more than 600) even has two in SLI.  And every OTHER spec blows all of those away too.  Granted, for the price, it's mostly barebones hardware, but since you already have an OS and a monitor you can transfer both those over and you're making a killing.  Where the hell did you find those specs for that price?  X-x

Or if you're looking for some hardcore gaming, go with a Geforce 9600GT or the newer 9800GTX Nvidia series.

The 8500GT is super fail, and SLI is only good for true performance enthusiasts. The best route to go is to just build your own computer. There are plenty of tutorials online to help you with what you need to look for, and I am also willing to help with any questions you have.

To put it in perspective, I built a computer that plays Team Fortress 2 on all high details at 1440x900 for $300, not including a new monitor.

EDIT: Specs of my computer:

AMD X2 3600+ Dual-Core 45 nm processor, overclocked to 2.14 ghz on stock cooling (with new thermal paste)
1 GB DDR2 800 RAM (got another gig coming in the mail)
Nvidia 7300GT w/ 256 MB GDDR2, overclocked to 440 mhz core on stock (this will hopefully be a 9600GT by the end of the summer...it's the best mid-range card available)
160 GB and 60 GB IDE Hard Drives
Acer X203W 20" Widescreen Monitor, 1680x1050 resolution

Yep, $300, and it gives me incredible performance for how little I spent. The 60 GB was second-hand, and I bought my external DVD burner from a friend for $20. Also used my old case from a Pentium III system.
