and i know you mean manga as " japanese comics", but i can't help but laugh at your manga fusion comic considering what you give as definition for american style.
erm, the same way as people say "manga style". Just like that manga has many kinds of styles and people still call them "manga" that's why I call it american style. And " but i can't help but laugh at your manga fusion comic", I never said COMIC, or else you are blind and don't know what the difference is between a comic or art. If you're laughing for something I didn't said or the fact that you're blind you're also very lifeless. Please shut up.
oh, sorry. that was supposed to be comment.

alright, moving away from the style crits, here are some thoughts about the drawing itself:

First, a question. Not just for you to answer, but to think about: Where is your light source? It looks like you want it to be directly above Link, but there are a good few instances of pillow shading.

I think the pose is really weak. He's just kind of standing there. But it's not just normal standing still, relaxed, it looks like it would be rather uncomfortable to hold that stiff pose, especially with the feet so close together. It almost looks like he's about to fall over to his left. It might be something that's difficult to change at this stage, and probably something you don't really want to change, but it's something you can at least learn from.

This one's an anatomy crit, so you might regard as me not quite agreeing with your style. I feel his head's way too big for his body (it aids to his off-balance look), and his mouth is small and a little low.

Now, some things I like:

I like the big eyes. They aren't quite Manga eyes, but neither are they the eyes of the more realistic comic-book style you referred to. I can't say why, but I feel they work.

I love the shading style. Dramatic in some spots, softer in others. I feel it works best on the face, with the eyes and everything. It really gives this piece a UNIQUE style, and that's something I admire. I can't wait to see it finished.

try using these as a style reference.  WAY to deformed right now but good attempt.

I don't know if this is a style complaint or not, but... You turned him into an emo kid. >.>
Uh... almost.

I think it looks pretty damn cool.
I'm not too sure what the major beef is with everyone who replied :P.

Only thing i agree with is that it's not American, but i enjoy it nonetheless.
And Invader is right about the light source. Just looks like you pillow shaded in a way.

It's okay, but not American-style at all.
