Interesting. Yet makes me wonder, If Mega Man is going to be in it, who else could he possibly put in that looks so out of place?

Gyromite?  Who knows.

I fixed the Youtube link by the way (when using the tag, just put in the stuff after the "v=").  I like the concept, but some of the movements look blocky and strange even at a lower speed, but I like the level design and the amount of effort put into the menus, characters, etc.  Good job, and I look forward to this project.

This game is going all the way. I know just because Drew NEVER fails to finish a project, and he's already made amazing progress on it.
It's not complex like Linkman00's SSBM 2D GM remake (years and years ago, never finished), but much nicer and smoother.
Join up his forums if you have suggestions and ideas.

You didn't read my post?

"The game play is also half the speed of what it should be in that vid, that's because my video recorder slows EVERYTHING down while it's running.
(see, it's running at about 20 FPS when it should be 40 FPS)
"

And thanks! :)

Please tell me you'll use the same policy you're doing with the characters and lift music from the NES games instead of those MIDIs. Please?

Looks interesting. You might do a pretty cool job of it :P.

I await it's completion.

The only way it could really happen is if I find a composer. I'm not that deep into music making/audio myself, so I couldn't personally re-create the "Break the Targets" music for example into NES sounding music.

Load the music into Jazz..change the instruments and use a conversion tool...it will convert it into a mp3 or wav...could even try iTunes to convert after you have changed the instruments...

The game looks cool, although i wish you had included some combat in the trailer instead of just a target test, is the A.I. done yet?
Title: Re: [Trailer] Super Smash Bros.: NES

Cool game. I'd like to ask, how many players (including CPU players) can play in the same battle?
Title: Re: [Trailer] Super Smash Bros.: NES
Post by: Colbydude on July 26, 2007, 05:37:03 pm
I'm guessing 4 just like the real game. Since it's NES style think you could add Snake into the mix?
Title: Re: [Trailer] Super Smash Bros.: NES
Post by: Drewdelz on July 26, 2007, 05:40:49 pm
The A.I. isn't done yet, I'm waiting until I come up with the final build for the character roster.

As far as players go, like playing on an NES, there is a max of 2 human players. But you can have 2 more CPU players if you want.

There's already plenty of chars/stages in and coded now.
I just don't think I will ever release a playable-demo, only videos.
Title: Re: [Trailer] Super Smash Bros.: NES

You should release a demo for certain people to test to see what could be improved at least.

Thats a good idea for beta testing, maybe make a poll saying like 'Its good' or 'needs improvement' or something and post a link so people can download it, then the people can say what they think it can improve on or make it look better in any way. just an idea

<_< Still waiting for Gangwars 2....

On a lighter tone, it is looking pretty cool right now, although I wish we could see a bit more. I'm actually glad someone I can trust took over a Super Smash Bros 2d project (God forbid the ones at the GMC.), especially someone with such a high completed games record.

 Good luck. :)

As you can see from the below screenies, I've already implemented graphical improvements, also, I finished the time record keeping system.

You now see the record of the current selected character.

There is now an in-game HUD showing the ammount of targets left, and the time you've taken thus far.

Just showing you the improvements in that area since the beta vid of Break the Targets.

Oh, and in the character select pic, I had two secret characters unlocked at the time, so I sort of "blurred" them out so you couldn't see them. lol

Samples?

And shouldn't it be a lower resolution?

Lower res? No thanks.
With a game like this, higher res and large fields of view are important.

I got a couple questions about the contest.

- In the banners, do they have to be sprites or can they be pictures of the characters from any game they are in?
- Can we post banners here if we don't want to sign up to your forum for the game?

They don't have to be NES spritess only, but in my opinion, they'd look better if it was.
And you can post them here too I guess.

God you're my hero, this idea has been on my mind for a long time, never had the time to do it though. Looks amazing so far but a few questions, any chance of online? And will each character have 4 special moves (^b,< or > b, vb, b) like in melee, or just a few? Because from the target test with link, I think I only saw 1 special move in play. Good luck completing it either way.

edit:Checked website, answered both my questions, so no need to address them.

Horrible.

Please don't get me wrong.

The idea is very nice. The graphics are good.

The programation and its physic are very poor and it lacks on movements (link's spin attack is a downward thrust?)
If you want to make a good game make at least an animation of 2 frames for each movement.

Please check the physics. They are VERY poor.

Some advices
-When a player presses the jump key in midair the character sprite goes to the stand position for 0.5 secs and then he jumps (so you can see the 2nd jump)
-When a player falls change the sprite into a jumping one.
-Make the selection screens with less details. Make the logo and above it white words Game A and Game B (those are solo and multi, that's cool cuz it gives a touch of nostalgia) Remove details from the character selection screen. Don't forgive that it's a NES game!
-Remove quality to the midis
-respect the 8x8 sprites and backgrounds order
-Add more vertical acceleration
-If links makes the spin attack in the midair and before it finishes it he touches the ground cancel the spin attack
-NEVER EVER make transparency
-Respect pallets

I think that's all lol

I'm a spriter. If you need anything, just ask me ;)
Title: Re: [Trailer] Super Smash Bros.: NES

I'm a spriter. If you need anything, just ask me ;)

Personally, after that first impression, I don't want anything from you.

You talk as if you know exactly how this game should play. Does link HAVE TO have an upward spin or something? You should listen to yourself. "Remember, this is an NES game!"
That move never even existed for Link back durring the NES era.
And you're complaining about stuff that is only even slightly visible at less than half gamespeed.

Do some research on this game before you try to tell me how it should be done.

For instance... Vertical exceleration??
If you would of even bothered to read over the site, you'd know that Link is a faster character, and falls faster also. (sort of like Fox in Melee, but not insanely fast)

And I'm aiming towards having content that was only out durring the NES period, I don't really care if the pallet is perfectly 8-bit.

Here's some good character ideas for you:

Donkey Kong  (from donkey kong arcade)

Luigi  (from super mario brothers 2)

Toad  (from super mario brothers 2)

Peach (from super mario brothers 2)

Bowser  (from super mario brothers)

Simon  (from castevania)

Nana & Popo  (from ice climbers)

Pit  (from kid icarus)

Justin Bailey Samus (from metroid)

and you could change the mario sprites to super mario brothers 2 sprites sense it was on the NES.

And you could also add the mario bros arcade stage.

Saying "add_character" is pointless since we don't know who's in the game already.
since we don't know who he has exactly, we may as well suggest just in case.  I have a few suggestions myself.

-Battletoads-   All the way!!!  They already have allot of fighting sprites too.
-Contra-, they would take some spriting though.
  -Double Dragon-
  -Bomber Man-, Oh ya!!!
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-, Kowabunga Dudes!!!
  -Ninja Gaiden-

There are more but I can't think of them so I edit later.

Straight from the FAQ:

Q: Will this game support gamepads?
A: This game will not have built-in Joypad support.
However you can use this program, JoyToKey (http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm).

Thanks for the positive feedback! :)

This actually looks pretty pwnsome, and has inspired me to try fooling around with my own SSB project and MAYBE releasing it if I ever finish it.  I've never been good at making side-scrolling games though, because the character objects always get stuck in the ground and don't jump the way I want them to.

Wow, I'm actually getting really exited about this.  I just realized ow much you really have to put battle toads in this.  Here is a sprite page if you didn't already have one.  I got this from the Sprite Database here http://sdb.drshnaps.com/index.htm (http://sdb.drshnaps.com/index.htm).  This particular sprite page I got in the Snes section, but it is not to way better then the nes version sprites.  I will find some from the actual nes game.  Oo Oo Oo, please put the battletoads in your game.  It would be sa-weet!!!  XD, these were riped by ryan914 it says.  Battletoads was the best fighting game ever made for the nes!!!

The nes graphics aren't quits a good, but there are all the moves.  I am having trouble finding a sprite page though for strictly nes version.

Battletoads NES graphics weren't that good?? O_o
The game is known for having the best graphics of all NES games.

Yes, BattleToads had very good graphics for the NES, but at least it is in the right time frame.  The SNES sprites are better mainly because they have more shading, but they could be toned down to match the sprites in your game.  I think even the NES sprites would need to be toned down a little if they were to match the sprites of the other characters.  I would take a lot of work true, but I think the character would be worth it.  Smash Bros Nes = Awesome Game!!!,  Smash Bros Nes with BattleToads = Unbeatable Fan Game!!!   ;)

I think the game was also ranked one of the Hardest Nes Games ever made.  I'm not sure about that, but I think it was.

I've been playing it since I was 4 years old. And even now I cannot beat the entire game without cheating.

One thing that bugs me about that screen is that I can barely make out the HUD text. Maybe make it white text with a duplicate in black underneath and to the right a few pixels? Or outlined in black. That way you'll be able to see it no matter what the background. :D

Ah, I see. Yeah, his suit does change depending on the selected weapon. That's cool, though! So each special changes his color? (While I've played Megaman before, all of the Megaman I've played have been really hard... I can't even beat Cutman's stage in the original! D:)

Neat, but didn't feel like any Super Smash Bros. =/ It was more like a normal platformer, but anyho, I only tried adventure =P
By the way, are bad guys supposed to suddenly blink into existence in the middle of the screen while I'm jumping? I got kinda annoying on second level.
Title: Re: [Demo] Super Smash Bros.: NES
Post by: hawthorneluke on October 11, 2007, 04:48:09 pm
haha, that was fun, but i think having the jump height determined by how long you hold the jump key is important though
all in all the target practise and adenture mode seemed to work well ^^

getting kirby's damage up as high as possible and seeing him bounce around the place on his target practise level was great XD
but the attacks didnt seem fast paced enough, or maybe i just hadn't got the hang of it all yet though :/
and also, i had some weird sound playing problems sometimes. just with the sound mucking up for a second sometimes

by the way, whats the difference between the vista and other version?
Title: Re: [Demo] Super Smash Bros.: NES
Post by: Drewdelz on October 11, 2007, 05:09:07 pm
The vista version works on Vista, the Windows XP version doesn't. Simple. XD

The Vista version WILL work on windows XP also, but the filesize is almost a MB bigger so I put for both versions.

Great, but I encountered a glitch. I was playing as Kirby in target practice, when I died several times in a row (Die, load Kirby, play and repeat). Rather than going back to character select, the Failure message remained, and Kirby respawned on top of a yellow block which he bounced off of. The yellow blocks were at the part where it goes

Block nothing nothing

Wow, as far as coding goes, I honestly don't see how that could happen.
Because once the failure message appears, the game is paused and it's scripted to exit right away.

Also, I tried replicated the glitch, but it dosen't wanna do it for me. :\

Very odd indeed.

i meant technically >_<

but i just read some topic that said gm6 doesnt work on vista, but there's some converter you can use to make it do so
so i'm guessing you made that in gm6 and converted one exe to work on vista like that? lol

haha, the times when games seem to do the impossible
but, as long as the cause of the problem is correct, there's always at least one reason why it happens, of course :/

You know, it would increase the game's playability substantially if you added some way to cut to the menu during gameplay instead of having to lose all of your lives. Make it to where pressing escape while paused takes you back to the Select Character screen.

Press ESC while the game is paused... But... Drewdelz beat me to it... X_x

Ehhh... I don't know what to say... The characters' attacks could beat a little faster, I think. I enjoyed the Zelda II stage, BTW. I've been playing  Zelda II and Earthbound lately, so yeah. XD

My favorite feature, however, is the un-NES-like announcer voices!!! FEMALE AND MALE ANNOUNCER?!?!?!? Jeesuhs!!! That's pretty cool stuff right there... (Which even Nintendo hasn't done; they only have a male announcer!)

So yeah... Definitely needs more work, but all in all, pretty good so far.

About that demo:

The graphics are okay, I see you got them from existing games...

The particle effects look quite good, and fit a NES game.

The female and male voices are a cool feature, but the intonation could be better.

The gameplay didn't impress me. I expected it to have more fighting moves, such as punches, kicks, grabbing the enemy, etc.. And more special moves would be nice too. Also, it didn't feel like a fighting game, but more like a platformer. In this point I expected more.

The A.I. of the avarage enemies was very good, and metaknight's jumping also seem to have been difficult to program. But to tell the truth the fight against him was quite boring... he doesn't attack you often, he only keeps jumping and jumping all the time... I also expected more here.

The sounds and music were okay, but could be better too.

The mechanics seemed to be working well, but there is a bug in the collision.

Yeah, but it IS NES, and Drew tries staying true to the NES Nature.

Graphics, they are NES o_O Can't really make better ones than the exisiting ones.

For the gameplay, once again, its NES, if its staying close to the nature, its pretty hard to do things like that. Can't really make it all advancey like a Gamecube game or something.

Sound and Music, once again. NES.

ok seriously now, why the hell would anyone make a nes styled game but say "oh sorry, it's 100% nes style and so i can't make the gameplay too advanced" O_o
im pretty sure the nes style ends at graphics and sound for fan games
making the gameplay crap on purpose because its supposed to be nes like just sounds very stupid to me O_o

Actually, to downplay gameplay to suit the NES, you'd have to downplay the particle effects too, and replace them with either flickering sprites or the classic spinning world x-4 flame thingy from mario 1 :P

I think its a good game, personally ^_^ with the exception of a few issues (IE samus should be able to still move while firing a missile :P)

To add on to what Hawthorneluke said, some NES games had somewhat advanced gameplay systems. The only reason we view NES games as not-as-advanced is because the programmers weren't as advanced as they are now.

the programmers evolved that much?
i think system limits had quite a bit to do with it though :P

but yeah, some games really surprise me though on early systems, with how advanced they got to be, of course thanks to the developers

I don't know very well how programming in NES is, but I think it would be like making a whole game in Assembly language...

It was a pretty good demo, but I really just don't like the attacking style. It would work so much better if Z was regular attack and X was special...but its up to you I guess.

Hmm, well if you have a joystick/gamepad you can always use this program (http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm) called JoyToKey to re-arange the buttons. Plus you get the bonus of playing on a controller! :)

You could just get some nice person who can make windows apps to make a config program that saves controls to INI, and then the game loads them and uses then ingame. Alot of games are like that, it's just that you could get away with having that look like it's special instead of just a limitation.

whats making windows apps got to do with saving controls to an ini file? O_o

also, i'm fairly sure you can add pad support in GM, even if you can't i'm sure there'll be a DLL to do so :P

4 players? Ah, Kirby and Mario are the computer players, and Megaman and Link are the human players, right?

Also, I'm wondering... how's the A.I. going? Have you made it yet? And how many A.I. levels are there?

You should have added some more characters, or replaced Megaman, but hey that's just me talking.

Wow, I tried it and it is good.  I liked it.  It is lacking attack types though.  Like just normal punches and kicks in the various directions.  And why does kirby's ground pound thing last for so short.  You can only use it if you are just above the ground.  It should work no matter how high you are.  Another words it should last until you hit the ground.  Over all I really liked it though.  I hope that the fact that you are making it in nes style won't keep you from changing things that are easy to fix, yet greatly improve game play.  I like that you are sticking to the nes style of game, but to some extent it does need to be modernized.  I think the reason most nes games didn't have cool complex moves and such was because they couldn't program it.  If you can program more complex things now, I think it would greatly improve your game.  Good Job!  Keep up th work.

Regulus, there are plenty more characters.
They're all just unlockables which you don't get to see until the final version. :P

I know what you're saying, Aero88. But I don't want it to seem TOO out of place as an NES game. I want it to be comparable to the old classic NES games. I don't want the engine too advanced. (but like I said before, as far as graphics go, I'm being pretty loose with the NES' limits)
Title: Re: [Demo] Super Smash Bros.: NES
Post by: sjegtp on October 26, 2007, 05:37:39 pm
Yeah, I think that in a NES game you should keep the graphics, the sound, the controls, the memory and the size of the file in NES level. But there are things that don't need to be reduced, such as a smooth collision, the A.I. and the number of special moves (unless it makes the file too big, of course).

Also... how's the characters' A.I. going? :P
Title: Re: [Demo] Super Smash Bros.: NES
Post by: hawthorneluke on October 26, 2007, 06:34:08 pm
I really can't understand why trying to make a game that's supposed to be NES like would mean you'd want to limit yoursef shitless and therefore ruin easily possible better controls, gameplay etc
That really makes no sense O_o

But yeah, keeping it along those lines but not letting it effect such important things so directly like that seems fine though

No, the surface errors happen IN Windows, when I reboot (I have XP and OSX installed). When I open any Game Maker game in Darwine it just crashes and says it exited with an unexpected error.

The answer is simple, Garoth.
Just draw the HUD on a different layer. So it's drawn over the view.

But Kirby's "x" move is a little off key... like he skips a few frames and somehow appears higher... maybe lower the sprite?
Or make him pop up and down like a motion/variable?

In my Super Smash Bros fangame I'm using a function to draw the images stretched, in stead of using zoom. GM6.0 registered version has a function to draw stretched images, doesn't it? If you use it in a way that the program calculates the correct position and width/height of the images according to the position of the camera, it'll look just like zoom. The other images you draw normally without stretching.

That sounds far more complicated and messy than what it should be. XD

My engine is much cleaner and simpler.

<.<" It looked clean in the demos....
It's true though, in the beggining I had a few problems with the images' proportions (that's because the engine messed up with variable datatypes such as integer and float numbers) that I managed to fix later but... yeah, GM must have a simpler way to do that.

Wow, this is so awesome, I can't believe I haven't commented on this yet O_o.

It's brilliant how you're only using characters from the NES era. And obviously, you're avoiding heavy spriting work by only taking sprites from platform games :P. Which is okay, but just a note that Ninten (the Ness-like character from Mother 1) was around in the NES days, and so was Marth and Pit. Oh, and here's hoping there's an unlockable Balloon Fighter :D.

Good work with the project too. You always manage to come up with some cool ideas and actually COMPLETE what it is you're doing. Awesome.

One thing I would like to point out is that there is nothing seperating the first jump from the second jump. That REALLY detracts from it. You want to make it look like they jump again, not like they float upward from the first jump while not even moving.

Well, I started working with someone else on a Smash like thing (I really don't know how far I'll get and I'm still majorly working on Smash Karts), but for the second jump, I added a little eclipse effect that occurs at the bottom of the feet. :P

This project looks pretty good.

One thing I would like to point out is that there is nothing seperating the first jump from the second jump. That REALLY detracts from it. You want to make it look like they jump again, not like they float upward from the first jump while not even moving.
Yea, I was actually thinking about adding a little effect to the bottom of your feet when you double jump.

lol that's what I did! I called it a "JumpPad". XD

Judging by the life meters at the bottom, I'd say that Quickman there is just part of Mega's stage. ;) Looks really cool Drew

haha Yea, he's just the Boss for Megaman's adventure mode level.

So it is a 1 vs 2 Boss fight of sorts.
Although Megaman and Quickman will constantly fight each other unless you interupt.
But then when there's only one left, they'll go after you. So be ready! :)

Ah yes, I'm not really sure if he'll put him in since he's pretty much done the coding for the characters, maybe an unlockable?

Oh well, it's nice to dream :), maybe there could be a Castlevania level or something XD.

The full game is out now, so shouldn't the topic get updated or something like that.
