So, as ... all? of you know I've had an obsession for Elfen Lied since I first saw it. I've seen it 25 times and know almost every line of dialogue (in english) off by heart. Why? It was different to everything else. The anime had a really good mix of love and death themes, and completely drew me in with character development.
So, about 1.5 weeks ago, my friend says he's going to download something called "Eureka Seven". I of course, hating everything but Elfen Lied, didn't care. But, I offered to download it, since he has a small bandwith limit. Eh... so he set his MSN display picture to some E7 thing. I, being bored, google imaged Eureka Seven to meet his new "style". I saw some robots... and I !@#$% hate robotic anime... so I chose an image of the two main characters (young male and female, Renton and Eureka) holding hands in some bright light. I didn't care... so I set it.
Anyway, I got the... torrent (wtfsueplx) and started downloading. I went episode by episode (1-50) so I could watch it as it downloaded. 20kb/s is not for the win, trust me, for 12gb. It was slow as heck.
So, ep 1 was done... watched... eh, as usual, some "dumb kid" with some kind of skill nobody expected, and corny music to top it off. But I was bored. I continued episode by episode... And holy crap.
Here's the basic structure for the series:
1-10: Naruto-ish
11-20: Naruto with Adult themes? Wait, Guns and Blood? What?
21-30: Murders? Where the hell did this come from? Eureka's past explained... wow...
31-40: Romance so heavily mixed with influences it drove me insane. So many touching scenes where Eureka desires Renton... and he isn't there... then he is... what the heck? It had me in tears.
41-50: From good vs bad to the world hanging on the main character's soldiers... and the ending was outstanding.
I don't know why I got into it. There is something about me and innocent & in-human girls in complex world-affecting relationships that drives me to obsession. And no, the series isn't all romance, it's hidden until from about 25 - 40, when even then, it is necessary for the viewer to see it. I mean, Eureka gets basically physically mutated twice in the series (but is still "kawaii" I guess) but Renton still (although he runs away at the first, but after returning) shows compassion (good word?).
Themes: Love, Hate, War, End-Of-World, Alien, Adult, and whatever else you find good, it's in there.
...There are alot of characters, but not too many. Just enough to not confuse the viewer, but enough to get us to know and understand their lives.
Did I watch it? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Would I watch it again? Hell yes. Is it better than Elfen Lied? No, it's a tie, I can't decide... Should you watch it? STFU + GTFO, watch it.
Oh by the way, I watched the japanese version, not the english version, which is crap, gg.
Now for some screenshots (because the graphics were cool):
Reunited... this was a touching scene... (the music ruined it imo)
Kind of spoiler? I dont know.
In this Eureka flash back, it shows her targeting innocent city people with white sheets (surrendering).
And, being the heartless cow she was, kills them all.
She mows down more innocents with her SMG. This is before she finds kids covered in blood under dead bodies (I didn't get that shot and post it because... it's nuts). And followed by this massive pupil shrinkage close up... it's epic.
I cant get good screenshots without ruining it.
So, I guess a major theme in this is Change.
Get off your ass and watch it.
