I've never heard of this before. Does it make your computer faster?

It's basically virtual ram...

The OS uses actual hard drive space to act like ram to increase performance.
Can greatly increase speeds if you have smaller,older computers.

Keep in mind, however, that virtual memory is not nearly as fast as actual, physical RAM. It's mainly used in games and such whenever you run out of physical memory.

A really good example of this is in an MMO like World of Warcraft, in one of the large cities. Here you have numerous players, all wearing different kinds of armor in a huge environment that is constantly streamed off of your hard drive. While walking around, your game may pause frequently for very brief intervals, and you'll either hear your hard drive or see the indicator light come on, a sure sign that virtual memory is being accessed.

Your best bet is to set the min and max of virtual memory to 1.5 - 2 times your Hardware Ram.

ie:

512MB Physical Ram = 768 - 1024MB
1024MB = 1536 - 2048MB

If you have over 2GB of Physical RAM, just set your Virtual min max to 2048.

Also, if you have 2GB or more and are running Windows XP, you might want to Disable Paging altogether which will load the entire Windows Kernel into memory for a major increase in performance.

Copy and past the following code into a text file and name it virtual.reg, double-click to install, then restart your machine.

Code: [Select]
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
"DisablePagingExecutive"=dword:00000001

Slight gravedig, sorry.

I was just playing WoW yesterday on an older computer.  When going to the Undercity the game nearly locked up and the hard drive went crazy.  I actually saw the status monitor state that it was running at 1 fps and even 0 fps at one point.  I'm guessing the problem is that the computer only has 512 MB of RAM to begin with, so upon hitting the Undercity that wasn't nearly enough.

What do you mean I need a life?  =P  Hm... Lives... Isn't that something that you get in Super Mario Bros?  You know, those green mushrooms?  That's a life, right?
