Title: [Request / Solved] Manipulate software of things - possible? (more infos inside)
Post by: Fox on June 24, 2006, 12:04:47 pm: I was curious whether it is possible to manipulate software of things like my MP3-Player. There are things that - if changed or even switched off - would save much energy for it.

Is it possible?

Post by: Ben on June 24, 2006, 12:08:09 pm: Manipulating is a little different to rewriting. You can manipulate something by knowing where say a certain graphic is within the firmware of your iPod and changing it.

But this sounds like it would require rewriting, which requires the source code, or a magical method of decompiling.

Post by: Infinitus on June 24, 2006, 01:52:17 pm: Best you could probably do is extract the machine code and convert it to ASM, the modify it and recompile it, or better yet use a Hex Editor, neither are particualy efficient or safe. Either way its normally illegal to modify or decompile software.

Post by: litium on June 24, 2006, 01:59:57 pm: i do that whit my cellphone, but whit mp3 players, dvd's and cameras i think it's different, how do you decompile or "extract" the firmware from the mp3?
