I am looking for a good online chat engine; merely to chat.
I would like this because my friend is complaining about MSN being such a bother having viruses and popups everywhere.
But I would like it to have a login session. I tried GMC, but it didn't really help. All there is is online engines with connecting to an IP etc. No chat engine.

Thanks a lot

I would rather have my own, instead of having someone else host it. cause I don't know if they have a special program to allow them to view everything on it.....

... Just connect to an existing network, such as Windfyre, create a channel, and use mIRC or another IRC client to talk there :/

There's such a double standard about religion in the modern world. Catholics can gather, wear white robes, and say "In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti" and be considered normal.

But if my friends and I gather, wear black robes, and say  "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn", we're considered cultists.

No, I want to set up my own client and sever so I don't have to worry about eavesdroppers etc.
No matter how "trusted" they say they are, its still unacceptable for me.

Then you'd best start learning network programming.

IRC really isn't that "insecure". If you have your chatroom set to private, network administrators will leave you alone... The only alternative is to go out and buy a server yourself which is probably gonna set you back a fair chunk a month, not to mention it'll be hosted on another server, unless you pay for one yourself which will set you back even more a month. Basically, your best bet is to just use an existing server. Are you planning on doing illegal activity or something? Seems kind of shady to not want ANYONE to see what you're doing, including network admins (who by the way usually leave channels alone unless you give them reasons not to)... No matter what route you take, big brother's ALWAYS gonna be watching.

Use an IM service that has chatrooms.

Bit of a gravedig Reo :P. Doubt he cares anymore.

Anyhow I may have something of intrest to you Mewgull. Been writing a IM service over the last few weeks. It uses public key encryption on all messages, so theres no chance of external entities evesdropping your conversations, even the server can't read them. And the server files are provided as well if you wish to setup your own for total security.

Will be a couple of weeks before its done though.

Yes, when the topic is no longer relevant.
