Q n A

Q: How do i get it on my phone?
A:
Quote from: linky
There are various ways:

1) USB cable
2) IR port
3) Download from internet
4) Bluetooth
5) e-mail (think e-mailing it works)

I can't think of any more right now...

Q: How big will the complete game be?
A: i don't really know, but i guess that it'll be smaller than 1mb..

Q: What phones does it work with?
A: probably most phones newer than T610 with java and color screen, you'll need to check the max .jar size of your phone first..

Q: What maker are you using?
A: No maker, i use Sun One Studio 4 mobile edition (free download from sun)

Q: Can i play it on my pc?
A: Yes, but you'll need a phone emulator, they are free to download from SE/Nokia/Moto
A2: download the pc version, there is an emulator included..

Use MC sprites in your Hud (Hearts, Rupees, Key etc.) and for the item sprites...

My current phone definitely can't handle it. It sucks total ass. Either this or next month though, I'm getting a new one when I renew my plan (one of those $0 ones :D ) so I'll try it soon.... very soon ;)
Title: Re: Zelda Mobile - for java phones.. Released!

ok, release time!

download from here http://www.gorthwogh.com/download/zelda.jar (http://www.gorthwogh.com/download/zelda.jar) - the jar file
some phones also requires a .jad http://www.gorthwogh.com/download/zelda.jad (http://www.gorthwogh.com/download/zelda.jad) - the jad file

the best way to get it is probably to download it to your pc, and transfer it to the phone..
but you can also use the phone browser just type in the adress and the phone should start downloading, but there has been some small problems with that earlier.. (and that probaby costs a few cents.. 110k file..)

NOTE: i will release an emulator version for the PC shortly..

ahh.. now i can play kh2 for a few days.. :)

ok..

all that are having problems.. please tell me what phone you are using..

and to all of you that dont have a phone here is a free emulator..

www.gorthwogh.com/download/zelda-pc.zip (http://www.gorthwogh.com/download/zelda-pc.zip) you NEED to extract all the files to a folder, and then use the run.bat to start emulation..

NOTE: this emulator uses the java on your comp, if it does not work, then you are probably missing sun java in your browser.. get it from java.com
read the controls.txt for instructions..

.lol.

One the phone this looks and feels so right.
Minish cap graphics perfectly work on the small screen: Bright and colourfull+ no black edges..It works well.

On my phone (Its got a crappy blue motorolla OS), all the text is too big: Looks twice the height as the space thats there for it, and so some of it gets cut in half in height.
This is my phones designers idiocy however: The text is much much larger than i want it to be in general on the phone, and much larger than it is on emulators.
Any chance you could set it to small for the final release?

oh and this is l33tl33tl33tovely!

The ocotorocks are too easy just now though (slow rocks too).

hehe.. i think the font is set to small everywhere.. just to make shure i have updated the files.. now the fonts are set to small globally..
all phones have different fonts, and i can only use small medium or large.. my friend has the same problem on his.. *damn java*

wait till you get to the boss.. he is a joke.. extremly easy..

THAT WAS SO GOOD..
Well i mean the Demo.. it was very enjoyable =D Especially on cellphone... I know ti's still being worked on but i think the HUD part shouldn't block off that much of the screen or the map.. cause makes the playing screen smaller.. harder to see.. But it's really good.
Good job!  ;D

thanks!
yeah.. i know about the hud.. i have tested a hud without the black background (that is how i really want it..) but then it needs to be redrawn every frame (cause older phones don't have alpha channel support) and that slows down the game ALOT, not playable on older hardware.. i hope i find a way to get rid of the black background some way..

Very nice, but though, I think there are bugs.
1. I think in the cave where you get your sword... I don't see a text appear.
2. Stalfos in the game have two hp, and goriyas have 3. not 1.(to point things out)

and that's all, but a GREAT start! Can't wait when I get a phone!(drat, I gatta wait one more year...)
Oh, and... could you make the moving pace faster? And Link's walking animation faster? Cause in Minish Cap, Link's animation is fast.
Also, make the speed of the boomerang extremely fast. If you can.

RATING:
7.5/10

I've tried the other link (The .jad) and it keeps saying "There is not enough room to install" but the thing is, my phone is empty o_O...I wish it was a smaller file =(

I played the demo on your PC emulator it was great but some things where not that great.

(Good side) :)
-Playing Zelda on a cellphone
-New secrets

(Bad side) >:(
-Aquamentis was no match you could easily walk around him and take the Heart container and beat him from the back.
-Many enemies where missing in the 1st Dungeon.
-No Zora's
-No Tektite
-Kees don't act like octoroks/moblins it seems like you just copied the Moblin/Octorok codes and pasted them in a kees.

If you would improve these things it would make it so much better then it already is. :D

ah! now i remember.. i tried the game on a samsung (dont know what model, a bit older) and it was complaining about it being too big.. i think it needs to be <100k.. i'll see what i can do..

Hyrule_boy and xdragonsb: good points, i'll try to fix..

I managed to download the zelda.jad file and the game works pretty well. Says something like "phone doesnt have enough memory to transfer the file" when trying to download the .jar file. How important is the jar file anyways because it seems to work well with just the jad file?

Is it supposed to have sounds, I dont hear any. Collisions should be improved a bit. I also got some error in a room with boomerang mobs and the application closed.

Anyways awesome game and project!

I forgot to ask why is there no map engine? I know the whole Overworld + Underworld but not everybody knows it.

the map is so small so you don't really need it yet.. but i am working on an improved zelda 1 map engine.. probably in demo 2..

I managed to download the zelda.jad file and the game works pretty well. Says something like "phone doesnt have enough memory to transfer the file" when trying to download the .jar file. How important is the jar file anyways because it seems to work well with just the jad file?

the .jad file is a descriptor file for the .jar.. so if you download the .jad it will atomaticly download the .jar file
on some phones it works with only .jar others need .jad+.jar

there is no sound in game yet.. it is not supported by standard in mobile java 1.0.. i will add it later..

Yeah, if you can it may be good to have a verion with and withought sound (for the memory and compatibility)..only that would be code-tricky withought some sort of (if-only in C) precompiling techniques.
Though....You could go toa  little fun bother...Like have a special thing where whenever your about to write sound related code, go //#ifdef@SOUND_ and fin with //#endif_SOUND_ then write a little prog to search fthrough,  copying all bits of code not inbetween that clause, and so in the end have two progs, one with sound, and one completely withought, and no trace of ever having had.
Yeah, with the boss just stand at the bottom where he cant reach you and attack...But he was always easy wasnt he?
I wish my phone had a smaller text setting, but i cant seem to find one anywhere....damn phone os-u-interface-layer, its its fault the texts too big, not javas....though it doesnt help lol. I have no problems with the huds usage of the screen myself..though i do have a prioblem with my phones taskbar at the bottom, with the big MENU button with text on it. With its ugliness imposing on your game you couldnt put anything in there to stress me really.
One thing is that although there are two ways of opening the Menu, (7 and pressing my left-key) they dont do the same thing.
eg: if you press 7 then press the left key while in the menu, it will say "menu opened" rather than closing the menu, which would take pressing it again.

it is up.. now 98.1kb.. same link as before.. (same game, just optimized the .png files inside the .jar)
if you have samsung phones, you should use the .jad link.. (i think, but it can depend on your network provider..)

i have tested on a samsung SGH-X460, it was very slow, but still playable..

i think it sounds like your phone don't have full PNG support.. it might work with the full-color images.. but then it is about 10k bigger..
you have colored borders alround monsters and link? that is a png transparency problem, or does the game flicker? , then your phone doesn't support double buffering..

hmm.. it is probably the emulator, you have an older computer?, if you don't i suggest you uppgrade your java... (get at www.java.com)
i know there are some bugs with the emulator, if you enter a shop, it will be very slow, or just a white screen, i know of this, and i will fix it..

psp's have java-script in the browser.. but i don't think sony will add mobile-java in the psp, if they add java it will probably be the computer version, and that is not compatible with the mobile version.. i'd have to make an emulator or a wrapper, but i am learnig to code for psp.. maybe i'll try some zelda related things on it soon.. ;)

but still, it will be remade to work with this game, and more tunes will come..

and it is a great remix, would be a shame not to use it in any game..

yes, i am having problems with the text-size on different phones.. that is because, every phone has 3 different font sizes.. s,m,l.. i only use small.. but small on one phone is bigger than big on another.. ;)

i think i have to make a text engine myself.. with the original zelda:lttp font..

yes, i have been thinking about it..
but there is no point in translating the game before it is finished.. or very close to being finished..
well, you'll probably notice when it is time..

at the moment, just music, on phones that support it.. mine for example does not support volume controls.. so i can choose from max vol, or no sound.. ;)

sometimes the music stops (when the phone is loading other gfx..) but it is ok most of the time..

Does this mean you will be releasing the next demo soon?
Cool screenshot, you should add it in the first post. ;)

added, yeah it will be done soon i hope.. i will try to get it done before june..
but it needs some serious testing before i can release it, (it is very bad to hang other peoples phones.. ;)

and also the file is much larger than expected.. 210kb now.. but hey, you'll get 3 dungeons+music, and a few more secrets..
I have about 400 kb free space for games on my phone so i'll hopefully have enough space for the final version when you finish it too ;D

This is awesome. The game runs perfect on my NOKIA 7610

But I discovered a bug: There is the stone-puzzle in a cave where you will get a heartpiece. If you move the two stones onto the switches then the 3rd stone will disappear. But If you save your game at the position where the 3rd stone was then OMG!!!
If you restart the game, the 3rd stone will reappear and you are on the stone and can't move!!!

beside that: GREAT GAME!!!

Good news! I got a new phone and can finally test this.

I must say it works WAY better than I had thought it would. I had smooth gameplay all the way through. Good job!

Title: Re: Zelda Mobile - for java phones.. [New screens]
Post by: Gorthwogh on June 05, 2006, 11:08:39 pm
QUESTION: Is it free?

yes, it is free...  and it allways will be..

but if you download it directly on you phone it probably will cost you for the data..

so, to be totally free, you'll have to download it to your computer, and send it to the phone with bluetooth/ir/cable

There's a MIDI remix of Kakariko Village, made by both Captain Goodnight and TKM, that I believe is pretty good.

http://danthemanms.googlepages.com/KakarikoVillageRemix_Goodnight-and-TKM.mid

I'll bet that if you ask them, they'll give you permission to use it in your game.  Well, at least ask Goodnight.  I don't know if TKM ever rejoined...

Wow, absolutely awsome. Plays great on my N-GAGE QD(with controller like controls =P).

And the music is great too. Awsome remixes; Mabe Village was a good choice for a Town Theme in Zelda 1.

Great Job on making it this far, and please finish. This project is unique; it's for phones, and has made it this far(1 great/big demo).
...But I haven't had enough yet!
Title: Re: Zelda Mobile - for java phones.. [New screens]
Post by: Uppy on June 15, 2006, 10:55:00 pm
@ Sterlin254: Did the HUD numbers show up on the QD cos they didnt on the original N-Gage and I thought that inside the 2 machines were identical, haven't tried it on my new Nokia 6111 yet though...hopefully it'll work just as well on that as it does on my N-Gage, minus the HUD, I mean.

same here, I think it's an issue that Gorthwogh is looking into fixing, there was a comment eariler in this topic about it when I Raised the problem to his attention-although I didnt understand it seeing as my programming knowledge is limited to well....nothing, actually haha
Title: Re: Zelda Mobile - for java phones.. [New screens]

i have made the sprite for the hud numbers, but i haven't gotten to replacing them just yet,
i don't want to replace all text, just the hud numbers, the normal text will still be too big on certain phones..
(replacing all to a custom font uses lots of memory, and is probably slow..)

and the hud numbers is more important, right?
Title: Re: Zelda Mobile - for java phones.. [New screens]
Post by: Uppy on June 17, 2006, 07:18:47 pm
yeah! the font works perfectly for the normal text so theres no reason to change it :)

if you check the first page in this thread you'll find the downloads, and there you can get the PC-version (download , unzip ALL to a folder, run the .bat file)

it says it cant find the page when i try to go to the Zelda.jar with my mobile phone :(
rofl nvm i forgot to include /download/ ;D ::)
 >:( it says not enough phone memory to download file or something like that :'(

that was lame, it seems to download now, i removed some stuff from my gallery (so my gallery had approx. 280kb free space)
even though my applications memory had 340 kb free >_>
so it seems it saves it in gallery before moving it to programs

omg >_>
now it just said the file was too big
and yes, i tried the .jad file too

WHAT SHOULD I DO???? HELP MEEEEEE  :'( :'( :'( :'(
(i have a cable to connect my phone to the computer but i don't know where it is :P)
Title: Re: Zelda Mobile - for javaphones [Demo 2 Release]

Btw here's a phone emulator thing that could be useful (and maybe better than the other one):
http://kwyshell.myweb.hinet.net/Download.htm (http://kwyshell.myweb.hinet.net/Download.htm)
Look where it says Midp2Exe.

Hmm works perfectly with the debugger thing & other stuff in the version with music...nice music ;D
The sound isn't perfect on the emulator, it works the first time each sound gets played but after that its just static.
im still immortal though :P

i converted it to exe and uploaded it, here's the link:
http://miniupload.jdbye.com/uploads/1/programs/Zelda.zip (http://miniupload.jdbye.com/uploads/1/programs/Zelda.zip)

Seems you need the midp2exe runtime thing installed anyway, but maybe the runtime is just a couple DLL's or something you can include with the exe ;)
Or they can download and install this:
http://kwyshell.myweb.hinet.net/Download/MidpX/MidpX.exe (http://kwyshell.myweb.hinet.net/Download/MidpX/MidpX.exe)

Thanks to jdbye now the emulated version is much better, and i have replaced my version with a new .zip with the  .exe + dll:s needed to run this on the pc..

PC-version (updated .exe file)
http://www.gorthwogh.com/download/Zelda-PC.zip (http://www.gorthwogh.com/download/Zelda-PC.zip)

jdbye: the free memory on the phone must be more than 300kb, (the phone must uncompress the .jar file)

uppy: go up from the screen with the bridge to dungeon 1.. and then left/up/right/right/right

edit: i know about the credits/first play bug.. ;)

edit: i know about the credits/first play bug.. ;)
;D always glad to help ;)
I have a lot more than 300 after i deleted a lot of stuff, but it doesn't say not enough memory anymore, all it says is that the file is too big...i suppose that means i'll have to search for my DKU-5 cable or wtf it was :P

You should update your first post, it still says something like "PC version, 585 kb, use .bat file to run" ;)

updated..

it seams that some phones have a max .jar size.. (nokia series 40 max = 64k, nokia 60 = NO max..)
i dont know if this is the problem, but try to google for it..

here is a list of phones and some memory data.. i don't know what to look for.. ;)
http://www.club-java.com/TastePhone/J2ME/MIDP_Benchmark.jsp;jsessionid=CCA55EEEB100500B330AC80B29E7FD4B (http://www.club-java.com/TastePhone/J2ME/MIDP_Benchmark.jsp;jsessionid=CCA55EEEB100500B330AC80B29E7FD4B)

but it can also be because when it downloads the game it puts it in some cache, and after that tries to install, much like IE..
that would mean that you'll need minimum (jar size) * 2 of free mem..

Is it possible to cut the file into multiple smaller files (<100kb) and then combine them after downloaded in the phone? It complains the file??s too big, again.  :(

sadly that is not possible, the best thing is if you donwload it to your computer and transfer it to the phone with cable/ir/bt..
since it is a rather big download on your phone, i don't reccomend trying to download it lots of times, it might be expensive..

only download directly to your phones if you have atleast 600k free memory on the phone.. (i think you need to have double the .jar file size..)

i can probably shrink the .jar size with 40k maybe.. (optimizing the .png:s)

Well I do have over 700k free memory so that isn??t the problem. Seems like my phone just can??t download such a big files. I??ll have to get a cable somewhere.

Good to see this starting up again!

I left zfgc a long time ago but just had to register again to tell you how much I love what your doing with your game. It's java, runs on mobiles and is one of the most impressive fan games. It's so refreshing with something that isn't another gamemaker oot2d clone. Your work inspires me, and many others. Keep it up!

The new demo is very nice. Haven't found any bugs so far. However it seems like my phone (SonyEricsson K700i) only can handle one sound at a time. So every time I slash my sword the background music stops. The sword sound is played and the music starts over again. This gets a bit annoying since the result is that i only hear the start of the song over and over again when fighting. I have to take a closer look at this since I recall playing games with both background music and sounds.

Anyway thank you so much and I wish you the best of luck to your project!

I agree with what you said 100%. As for the sound problem it seems to be quite common, My N-gage does it as does sterlins QD, my Nokia 6111 handles it fine though....

wow, it is posts like this that inspires me to keep going.. :)
i know about the sound problem, i think someting is wrong with my hardware detection rutines... (according to that java spec, midp 2.0 phones must support atleast 2 simultanious sounds)

if you find it anyoing, turn of either music or sfx in the settings menu.. ;)

but i am working on a fix for this problem..

uppy: i dont think the finished game needs to be much bigger than this.. (i have most of the sprites that i need) (and maps takes 100-300 bytes per room)
estimates for finished game about 350-400k...

You should read your whole first post and fix anything that's wrong, there are still quite a few old stuff you forgot to update :P

For example these:

"110k file" :P it's a bit bigger now :P
the best way to get it is probably to download it to your pc, and transfer it to the phone..
but you can also use the phone browser just type in the adress and the phone should start downloading, but there has been some small problems with that earlier.. (and that probaby costs a few cents.. 110k file..)

And this - it's released now :P
Demo 2 release: late may / early jun

Oh and I bought a Motorola V360 yesterday. I get it on friday (my mum held it for bday ;)), It has Java support, and god knows how many features. Very nice phone. When I boot it up, I'll download your game :D

Edit: Yay, charging now. If java is as easy compared to C++ as people say, I might start some dev in it.

HEYYYY, It's me again, I tried your game before the Demo 1 and i loved it. This time is even better, i couldn't stop playing demo 2 last night... lol... It was fun and you added sounds which were great =)
Anyways, i don't know if it's a problem with all the cellphones, but when the BG music is playing, when i slash, the SFX sound comes on which cuts off my BG sound for like one second, which gives be a bit of lag.
And also the music gets cut off, which sounds real bad.
So when i play, i just play the BG sound not the SFX sound.
Did this problem happen to anyone? Or it's just my phone (Sony Ericcson J300a)
But it was a great improvement from Demo 1.
Keep up the good work =) I support you all the way XD

Like my N-GAGE QD, and a few other people who've posted' phone's; your phone cannot handle both sounds at the same time.

For the moment, you will have to either mute the sound FX, or the music.. to stop the BGMusic from being cut out like that :-\
Title: Re: Zelda Mobile - for javaphones [Demo 2 Released]
Post by: Gorthwogh on July 20, 2006, 07:47:38 am
yes, i am aware of the problem.. it is quite hard to solve..

it is like this:
all midp2 phones MUST support 2 simultaneous sound streams, but on some phones that might be midi+wav or midi+(another format).. so i need to write a hardware detection rutine that loads the right sounds and only uses the number of supported streams.. now it just assumes all have support for multiple streams (midi+wav) and many phones don't....

edit: mmm.. noodles... (homer tone)

sorry, you can't in this version, it uses the default game buttons on every phone (the recomended way to make a mobile game..)

i really liked demo2
but the graphics engine is very not advanced
the droprate is high and the gamespeed is slow
(the latter might be because its a mobile game)
so anyways, you to add at least a basic sprite that has 2 kinds of zorders
the first one is the top, its above everything else (drawn last)
the last one is where the sprite is drawn first, for ground sprites
so, to draw a tree, cut it in half, top and bottom
draw the bottom before, and the top after :)
other than that, does pushing work?
i was down in that cellar with the heartpiece, and i couldnt do what the sign said etc
good luck

send only the .jar file.. or donwload it directly with your phone..
but some phones require a .jad file too.. if that is the case try seinding both..

(i usually just right click on the .jar and select "send to"->bluetooth->"my phone")

2 new screens from demo 3.. (still far away from release, better it takes time than it being crappy.. )

(http://zeldamobile.gorthwogh.net/Zelda/Screen10.png) (http://zeldamobile.gorthwogh.net/Zelda/Screen11.png)

first is in dungeon 3 lighting the lamps..

second is in the new demo 3 area, the graveyard... you'll need the lamp there, cause the ghosts fear it and won't attack you..

Incredible! The original Zelda style was a sharp, semi-transparent circle but the fading is a nice change. :)
I'm guessing you just reduced the amount of phones that can play this quite dramatically, right?. :P

support for semitransparency is built into allmost all phones, but it might be slow to use, i think i'll have to make a fps check..

Uppy: cool, i need to get myself a copy..  :P

Hehe the article just has a screenshot, a link to your website and says something like "This game is designed for cell phones, it'll have zelda fans jumping for joy and Nintendos lawyers clutching their hearts with one hand and wallets with the other" LOL shouldnt worry about nintendos lawyers really tight butthole.

not sure if this has been asked...
does this work on a RAZOR phone? I don't have a cell phone, but I'll get one soon.
Either than that, what phone do you have that works this game?

it works on razr, myself i use a SE W810i... i think it works on most new phones (some super cheap ones might not work, but other than that, just get the one you like the most..=)
I still can't install demo 2 on mine, even the one without sound, EVEN WHEN I TRY TO INSTALL IT FROM MY COMPUTER :'(
And it wasn't cheap either :(
damn i need a new cell phone, but i aint got any money :(

I just got my phone yesterday (a samsung but I'm not sure which model its all black and I got it from radioshack, the box is away from me to tell what model.) But when I try to get the .jer file it says it cant be displayed and then when I try to get the .jad file it starts up like its downloading but when I start to it says ERROR 904 Server error or something along the lines of that.

EDIT: I just tried again and it said Error# 907 Server Error

The links in the Topic do not work

Try these:

With Sound
http://www.nyo.se/ZM/Zelda.jar

Without Sound
http://www.nyo.se/ZM/Zelda-low.jar

Download For PC
http://www.nyo.se/ZM/Zelda-PC.zip

My Phone cannot have caps in the Name, so I dunno if they would work or not. I've uploaded a Mirror for the With Sound version to FileAnchor so I can download it, and might as well let others do the same

With Sound
http://fileanchor.com/60130-d

Without Sound
http://fileanchor.com/60132-d

My mom has played this non-stop from the moment i installed it on her brand new Sony Ericsson K750i, rofl :D
She doesn't even like zelda, cause she sucks at it :P

Too bad my crappy phone won't accept files over approx. 110kb :'(
It wouldn't be possible to split the game in several parts? :-\

Ive played the emulator, pretty nice. I couldnt get it on my cell, though.
    Method 1:
Emailed it to my cell phone, error file not suported so removed from message
    Method 2:
Go to Url, typed it in, downloaded it to 99%, then froze

What happened?

i don't think you are allowed to send games from phone to phone (some kind of copy protection)..
did you try the first demo on you phone?
that one has a bit lower requirements and should work on any phone..

Would this work on the Sony Ericsson T630?

A few sources say that that phone supports mobile JAVA apps(J2ME).. not sure which midp version of this game you should download, though. Why not try it out?

EDIT: After a further look(i.e. following the link on the game's website), it seems like MIDP-1.0 is supported by your phone. But if it's like my N-GAGE QD(also MIDP-1.0), you can still use the MIDP-2 version, if you turn off either the sound fx or music.. as one will cut the other out (once again, I don't know 100%.. try both versions with all sounds, etc.. try until it works :P).

i can't say when the next demo is going to be released, i need to fix my life before i finish the game.. :P
(my daytimejob is taking waaay to much time)

the bombs are in dungeon 1, in the leftmost room.. (from start: up,up,up,left,up,left)
you have to push a block to open the door..

Gorthwogh, have you thought about developing for Symbian OS-based phones? They aren't as widespread as Java, but unlike Java, there aren't a whole bunch of different "flavours" floating around :-P

Yeah, i have, but since i don't own one it is much harder.. :P
My friend floaf has one, maybe he has something to say about it?

But porting it to symbian can prove quite time consuming, and i hardly have time to do the java version..
I will continue to work on the java version, and maybe if i get myself a symbian phone someday i might develop something for it.. =)

Edit: And the greatest thing with java is that it works on most phones..
Title: Re: [Demo] Zelda Mobile - for javaphones [Demo 2 Released]
Post by: Floaf on April 18, 2007, 09:15:05 am
Well, you need an IDE and a SDK for every version of Symbian (there are a few out there), the time to set everything up. And you need a few emulators for testing.
Then, porting java code to C++ isn't that stright forward that you might think. If you don't design for c/c++ from the beginning, there a certain chance of memory leaks and other memory/pointer related errors, and they can be quite hard to find, if you even notice them (everybody hates random crashes).

But the main thing you need is a reason to do it :-) (of course, being a nerd, you don't need a reason other than that it's fun to try new things you haven't done before). And you need the time.
I don't know exactly but it seems like the reason to program for symbian in C++ is that you gain some speed and you have access to the device specific hardware. The game, as it is now, doesn't run slowly and it uses sound output available in the java standard. And it works on Symbian phones too :-)

So, anyone have a good reason for gorth to develop a symbian version? :-)
Title: Re: [Demo] Zelda Mobile - for javaphones [Demo 2 Released]
Post by: AcidGame on April 19, 2007, 12:59:51 am
Well, it works on the newer Symbian phones ;-P At least with sound.. older Symbian devices don't have MIDP 2.0....

The number of SDK's actually depends on what Symbian platforms you are aiming for. True, there are a few out there.. but each has its different market. And it's not hard to follow Symbian standards and make a program which can be easily compiled on every SDK to produce the same game. Of course, the code wouldn't be ported, it would need to be recreated, since Symbian is a lot different from Java... And all Symbian-based phone emulators will throw an error right when memory isn't freed that needed to be, making Memory Leaks fairly easy to find.

Furthermore, you will find that all Symbian devices all share the common Symbian framework. As I've noted above, if you follow the standards you will end up with a game that can be brought between all of the different SDK's and compiled for each phone with little source code changes (which can be done with preprocessor statements..)

I've suggested this because I (myself) feel that Symbian is a much better platform for mobile games. Unlike regular phones and their java, you won't ever have "missing api" or stupid things like that :P So you have some security in knowing that if it works on one phone... it will pretty much run on all of the others with no changes. (Of course I mean within the same Symbian platform you were aiming for, i.e: S60 1st/2nd/3rd, UIQ, etc..)

Perhaps a better way of explaining what I mean is.. in Java, everything completely depends on whether or not the manufacturer of the device decided to put that package on the mobile phone or not. It is not this way at all with Symbian. If you want an API to get, say, a users IMEI or phone number (just some basic examples), with Symbian (more specifically, Series60 - since I've never worked with UIQ) the API is always there, no matter what device you use. Also unlike Java, Symbian programs don't generally have "size restrictions". Most manufacturers will limit the size of java programs (and the data they can store) to something like 100kbs, which is really a problem for games.

I do voluntary support in the forums of a commercial java game, when I have time.. and it is really bad how many people come with problems concerning errors, due to inconsistencies with Java...

Gorthwogh, what software do you use to make this game?

It is written in java (j2me) by me, from scratch, with no additional libraries..

I use Sun StudioOne 4Me as my java editor/compiler (any J2ME compatible editor would do).
i also have the free mobile development kit from sonyericsson (emulators, documentation and stuff).

To make the maps i use a mapeditor i wrote for XeldaOnline a while back..
(the editor is made in c++ using visualstudio and directX, (it uses d3d to render the maps.. hehehe))..

right now it is kindof hard, but im planning on moving all the text to a plain indexed text file..
and i would be happy if someone took the time to translate it.. =)

i'll have to re-make my text engine anyways and stop using the internal fonts (they cant be trusted to have the same size so it allways looks too big or too small)

I played the emulated version. I had a bit of trouble accustoming myself to the fact this is a cellphone game... :P So my criticism might be off a bit...

I liked it... But there's something I didn't like: The sounds... Eventually, I found the option to make the sound go down and make the music go up, so I guess it's no biggie.

But there's something worse than that...

YOU CAN'T KILL THE OLD MAN?! WHAT TRAVESTY IS THIS?! XD I hope you decide to include this little tidbit of flavor... I didn't get far enough to see if you included the "It's a secret to everybody" Moblins and stuff... I like the graphics too. :P

I also hope that the PC emulated version gets updated along with the Cellphone one as my cellphones a brick and my mom's cellphones probably doesn't have java... :/

yeah, i sort of changed it, the map still has the same basic routes, in the original deathmountain was a place where you went to face ganon and nothing more..
i wanted to add some exploration.. you can still take your favorite road to ganon (all except one), but now you'll also find that there is more to it than just the final showdown..  =)

Awesome Gorth! Can't wait to finish the game I never played on the NES, on my phone! On another note, have you thought about the easy-to-translate text input? There are some French fans out there that just can't wait to play the game, but understand it too!

yeah, im trying to move all the text out to a .txt file, and using indexes to find what it should write on screen
So it will just be a matter of translating the words in the text file, and replacing it with a french/german/engrish/swedish or whatever language you'd like version.. :P

Still a few more things i need to do before i can release the game, but im well on my way and it is about 80% completed right now.. =)
i estimate 1-2 more months of slow development.. (i have a "real" job too ya know)

That is great news Gorth! You should release that .txt file to translators as soon as it's ready so that on launch day you'll have the game ready to be played by the whole world!

i think the normal version would work, (Normal version all phones with midp 2.0)
i've tested it on windows mobile 6 and it works.. =)
(it is a bit hard to play with the stylus, but otherwise good..)

Hm...  It looks like it should work.  I tried to run it on my PPC and it said this.

"There is no application associated with "Zelda". Run the application first and then open this file from within the application."

Is there a Phone emulator that I need or am I just missing something?  Sorry for the trouble.

seems that java (j2me) support is not built in to non-phone PPCs..
there are however a few javaVMs that do provide support for PPCs
i found this list if it is any help, i think you have to install something (i have no idea what im talking about.. :P)

Such a shame I can't play this. I have a Java-capable phone but, alas, my phone plan apparently requires a $1.99 charge for one download, and if it fails that's a wasted $1.99, and I'm very, very, VERY poor right now.

Perhaps in the future :P

Holy crap, Demo 3 is out, and I still don't even have a mobile phone that can run Demo 2 :(

Q: How big will the complete game be?
A: i don't really know, but i guess that it'll be smaller than 500k

It's already bigger than 500k, so you may want to change the FAQ ;)

i had to remove the swing animations, because of the lack of ram memory in the phones..

its currently 90% and still going.. =)

demo3 contains 60-70% of the game
dungeon 1-6 and a boat load of items and heart pieces for you to find, try it.. =)
it takes about 2 hours to complete.. (if you are fast..)

its a huge demo.. more like a beta version of the full game..  8)

This is quite awesome- it's keeping me inspired as to what a fan and creator (like me) might be able
to accomplish :-)

I love the work so far - keep it up man, I can't wait to see the finished product.

My one caveat though- is there a possiblity you could add support for wide screen phones
like the t-mobile dash (htc excalibur)?

you mean like rotate the entire screen? i've tried it on some htc phones, and it seems that it rotates the game itself,

sadly i can't add scaling.. (they dont have that in mobile java.. i'd have to write it myself, and it would probably be slow.. )

I tried to add scaling support once, but as you say, it's too slow and the only way to achieve decent speed would be to pre-scale everything beforehand.

The music works, but sound effects don't. It doesn't matter though, now nothing can disturb the music :P
Will the final version be out in the near future? I've been checking this topic every now and then for a while, it almost seems like the last 15% of the game is taking as long as the other 85%.

ZFGC is so dead nowadays. No one ever posts in this topic anymore :(

Oh and btw, why haven't you made a PC version of demo 3 with the emulator? I tested the MidpX thing I told you about with demo 3, and it seems to work fine. It wouldn't be much effort to create the exe, zip up the DLL and EXE and upload it to your site...

I'm stuck in the 5th dungeon, that's where the lamp is, right? I can't find it anywhere. From the large map of the dungeon on your website, it looks like there are some staircases I haven't been to, but I can't figure out how to get there.

Gravedig much, jdbye?
Not really, it's hard to reply to any topics on ZFGC anymore without gravedigging.
(My internetz finally work again, for now)

As the project's not dead (at least I don't think so) it's not really gravedigging either.
