Entertainment / 3DS Friend Codes? Come on guys, where's the topic D:
« on: March 28, 2011, 01:31:23 am »
DO NOT POST FRIEND CODES HERE

Just stopped in to post my 3DS FC only to discover that there's no topic for it. D:

Since I'm 99% of the time a lurker, it wouldn't be good idea to turn this into the official FC thread since I wouldn't be able to maintain it.

So... could someone make a topic for it?

Entertainment / Quality non-sex romp Visual Novels
« on: March 25, 2010, 10:53:12 pm »
So one thing I've discovered since my...uh...time of "reduced social-ness" are visual novels.  Unfortunately, VNs get a really bad rep, so I like to sometimes try to spread knowledge and awareness on them.

The 2 main issues and misconceptions are:
1) They're sex romps
2) they're games of hardly any interactivity, and therefore boring

Both of which are only half-true.  Yes there are many VNs that are sex romps, but at the same time there are many movies that are just porn flicks.  Does this make ALL movies porn?  Heck no.  The issue is just that many VNs target the otaku and weaboo, and therefore end up jam-packed with fan-service and yes, sex scenes.  Like a Hollywood blockbuster, some high quality VNs will only have a sex scene or two just for the sake of it  - Either way, VNDB is a good resource for sorting all that out.

As for the second, yes, it's true that many have very little interaction.  Heck, some even have pretty much no interaction at all! (kinetic novels)  At the same time, some even have RPG game elements built-in.  Either way, if this is a complaint, you're looking at it the wrong way.  Try to not treat it as a game with some novel-like elements, but a novel with extra media richness and some minor game-like elements.

Now this is the part where I point out a few free quality VNs (with no sex content) as examples:
Narcissu (kinetic novel - no plot branches & choices)
True Remembrance (kinetic novel)
Katawa Shoujo (Act 1 demo)
Fate/stay night (trial demo) (demo has no plot branches & choices)

And some non-free quality VNs (with no sexual content):
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (kinetic novel)
Clannad
Ever17 -the out of infinity-
Tsukihime (no-sex option included in english patch)
Fate/stay night: Realta Nua (Realta Nua replaces the sex-scenes with more plot-logical scenes)

Now that that's out of the way, I just gotta say... Fate/stay night was an INCREDIBLY AWESOME read. (the Realta Nua version even increases the GAR)

Is there a reason that the Firefox link in the "use a better browser" banner (only visible in IE) links to Mozilla Europe instead of the standard mozilla.com?

4
CURRENT STATUS
Well, I figured out a way around it, but technically the problem still exists... maybe it's just a Firefox + SMF issue? (doesn't happen on here in Opera or on other forums in Firefox)  So I'll rename the topic appropriately in case someone else has this issue in the future.

Quote from: Nintendo Maniac 64
HA!  I FIGURED A WAY AROUND IT!.  Have it loop, but only twice with the 2nd frame at 99999ms.  That way when it jumps back to the first frame, the animation isn't actually complete and will continue animating to the 2nd frame as normal!  daaaaa Naaaaa NAAAAA NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

OLD ISSUES
It seems that my APNG avatar is up to its old habits again, even though I've upload it directly to ZFGC.  It can't be going back to the first frame from resizing since there IS no resizing... I don't know if this is just a fluke that's only occurring to me or what but just like before, it's only happening here. -_- *sigh...*
----------------------------------------------
I can officially say that the resizing of avatars is making my avatar jump back to it's first frame and freeze in Firefox 3 (my avatar is supposed to animate only once).  This did NOT happen when my avatar was not resizing.  It's the second problem all over again!
----------------------------------------------
My APNG avatar is stretching to 150 x 150 again (it's natively 100 x 100) in Firefox 3.0.1, Opera 9.51, and even IE7.
----------------------------------------------
UPDATE: It seems that the stretching is gone, but now the 1st frame of my avatar's animation is stuck being visible or something. (my avatar has 2 frames)

It looks like the resizing from 150x150 to the intended size makes my avatar jump back to the 1st frame.  Any ideas?

EDIT 2: I'll be updating this post with quotes and info from my other posts to keep things in one place.
Well, it seems like sometimes doing things will "coax" it to switch back. (like switching tabs or scrolling down to make the image go off the screen and then scrolling back up)

Maybe it's a bug in Firefox?  I don't seem to get the problem on other forums though...

EDIT: Yeah, on DCEmu it doesn't happen.
Example: http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2148073125#post2148073125

EDIT 2: I just tested it in Opera 9.5 and this problem does not exist.

EDIT 3: it seems that SOMETIMES (though rarely) my avatar will animate correctly after I make a new post or edit an existing one.

EDIT 4: oookaaaaay... now it animates and renders properly about half the time independent of what I do. (though it's probably just random and I'm getting lucky)

I'm getting a rendering defect that ONLY happens on ZFGC.  Seems like a forum issue to me.

Here's some more links to other forums if you're still not convinced:
http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?p=63514#63514

http://orangeloungeradio.com/phpnuke/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1857&start=0#13813

EDIT #n (no idea, lost count):
Looks like this doesn't happen anymore, probably either from the site overhaul or the Firefox 3.0.1 update, but I'm having the issue with my avatar being stretched to 150 x 150 again... (it's natively 100 x 100)

Other Discussion / HOLY CRAP at this SVG image
« on: June 25, 2008, 08:16:38 am »
Ever since I downloaded Firefox 3 I've been playing with its much faster SVG rendering (compared to Firefox 2) along with the zoom function.  Now before SVGs took several seconds to load and made things considerably slow.  Firefox 3 changed all that and they were suddenly usable in real-time!

Well today, I was looking for some anime-styled things that happened to be in SVG format.  I really couldn't find anything, until I eventually stumbled upon an SVG image on the Wikipedia page for Anime (go figure, I was just there last week and didn't even realize the image was there)

Now, I was amazed at the quality of the image for being an svg.  That high quality comes with a price though...

Link to SVG image: http://static.wikipedia.org/new/wikipedia/en/images/shared/1/14/Mahuri.svg
Image info and PNG preview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mahuri.svg

Needless to say, that thing MURDERED my CPU more than Crysis ever would.  I even had the brilliant idea to zoom in 200%.  That in itself took like 20 seconds to re-render, but then I attemped to scroll down.  HO BOY, that took pretty much an entire minute to complete the action!

My CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2100+ OC'd to 1.95 GHz

Anyone out there daring enough to put their CPU to the test?  The image looks innocent enough... but I tell you, that innocence IS A LIE.

I happen to have a fire.fox image banner in my sig, and seeing that it's fire.fox, I obviously have the name of the browser in the image's filename.  Apparently though, the word filters even apply to URL links, which is making the image not display by changing the URL.

Entertainment / Anyone here play TrackMania Nations or United?
« on: April 25, 2008, 10:10:49 pm »
Just wondering, because I personally bought TMU off of Steam last year, and now with the Forever update, I can play on all the servers designed for TMN (which is where most people play because TrackMania Nations is free)

Since I finally got around to changing mine since I got my new PC from back in May, I figured why not make a topic about them?

Here's mine (in the needed 640x480 with 16 colors - using my custom optimization procedure)
(note, even though for Windows OSes BMP is required, PLEASE convert to PNG/GIF for this topic)

Yes, it's 2k-tan... what can I say, anime + girls + technology = win

Original image link

(sorry Mac and Linux users, the following is only for windows.  But I figure Linux users are smart enough to figure out how it'd work on their OS)

If you run XP/2K and don't know how to change your boot screen, I recommend using the program "bootskin" (LINK  It MAY work on other windows versions, but I cannot test it to find out.)

First find your image and open it in an image editing program. (I recommend XnView)  Make the image resolution 640x480.  Next, reduce the colors to 16 and then save as a BMP (filename must have NO spaces). Make sure it's actually saving as a 16-color bitmap and not converting it back to 24bit.

Then go install BootSkin.  Once installed, there will be a folder called "skins" where you installed bootskin (for me it's: Program Files\Stardock\WinCustomize\BootSkin\skins).  In the "skins" folder, create a new folder called whatever you like.  In that folder, store the bmp image you edited/created.  Now in the same folder, create a txt file named "bootskin" (without quotes).  Put the following text inside (replace brackets and the text inside them with the values specified, KEEP THE QUOTES):
Code: [Select]
[BootSkin]
Type=0
Name = "[insert any name here]"
Author = "[insert your name here]"
Description = "[insert a description]"
Screen=[file name of image WITH EXTENSION goes here]

So for example mine looks like this:
Code: [Select]
[BootSkin]
Type=0
Name = "2k-tan"
Author = "Me, Myself, and I"
Description = "2k-tan bootscreen"
Screen=2k-tan.bmp

Then change the file extension of that txt to ini

Now go back to BootSkin and your boot screen should be selectable.  Click apply and then the next time you boot into that OS, it'll be there.

EDIT: I think I've edited my instructions enough :P (due to pickiness of clarification)  Hopefully you guys can understand what I meant.  If not, I'll create a topic again in the future with a video.

EDIT: BTW, this is the first time I actually had a Digg story succeed :D (and it's actually only my 3rd one)
EDIT 2: How it happened was that the Joystiq story was practically just posted when I viewed it, so nobody got the chance yet.  I was even in school :P (it was around 9:30AM)

EDIT 3: BTW, could some of you guys be so kind as to add me to your friends list on Digg seeing that I have none? D:

Other Discussion / Looking for a specific Image Macro
« on: October 10, 2007, 03:32:06 am »
I was on the Wii's internet browser earlier and there was an image macro I saw on an imageboard that I wanted to save.  But now that I'm on my PC, I can't find it.

The possible image boards should be 420chan and BBWchan.

The text said something like "This is serious" or "This is serious business"

It was 2 heavily-suited-up cops or something like that (assult rifles and everything) and the cop more on the right of the image was putting his hand out downward at like a 45 degree angle in this direction: \
The extended hand was outward, flat, and open like you would do for "stop" or "halt".  The hand was also above a small animal of some sort, might have been a dog.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Entertainment / Any idea what game my avatar comes from?
« on: October 06, 2007, 05:26:09 am »
First off, I'm not even sure if the image (the part above "VIDEOGAMES") is from 1 game and not assembled, but you never know.

ANYWAY, I don't feel like stating why, but I just need to know what game it comes from.

Here's a bigger image too:

Entertainment / Phew! I played 5 hours straight of flash Tetris on the Wii
« on: September 17, 2007, 01:43:27 am »
On friday afternoon, I played 5 hours straight of one flash tetris game on the Wii, and got the second highest score :D  The reason I screwed up is that there was a sudden quick down pour of rain and after it ended it got humid and hot.  I ended up sweating and I have an issue where my own sweat makes me itch, and I was way too close to the top of the screen to want to pause.  So yeah, I died :P

Check out my score in "Global High Scores" on here: http://wiicade.com/Data/447/game.swf

I'll try to tie the highest score (probably the maximum) sometime in the future, probably on a non-cloudy day. :P

Other Discussion / Wierd Port Fowarding Issues O_o
« on: July 30, 2007, 10:45:48 pm »
DSL Modem: Speedstream 5200
Router: Netgear WGR614v6

-------

For some really strange reason, I can't get my pc (and several others as I've discovered) to use fowarded ports... even though they did just fine about a week ago.

Basically... explain THIS:

Family PC - via ethernet Image Link

My PC - via "Netgear WG111v2" (USB WiFi reciever) Image Link
My old laptop - via "Netgear WG111v2" (USB WiFi reciever) Image Link

My sister's laptop - via "Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG" (built-in WiFi) Image Link
My sister's laptop - via ethernet Image Link

My dad's PC - via ethernet Image Link
My dad's PC - via  "Netgear WG111v2" (USB WiFi reciever) Image Link

NOTE: my user account on my sister's laptop didn't have sufficient rights to access the ip addresses, hence the different info in the screenshots

Sooooooo... honestly, wtf O_o

EDIT: Well, I'm thinking it's either something with my wifi reciever, or with the router's wifi itself.  My sis has all these bundled security apps on here pc that probably is blocking ports and stuff.

Other Discussion / Fox News image directory is (was) wide open!
« on: July 24, 2007, 10:24:58 am »
Since the original link isn't there anymore, here's a mirror with all working links :D

http://members.nintendomaniac64.binaryphoenix.com/foxnews.htm

Who would've thought that the people at Fox were /b/tard too?

(in case you're wondering, yes I got this from digg <_<)

For quick skimming, get "Text to Image" (you'll need a lot of RAM for all those images, my 768MB didn't quite cut it):
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/618
(make sure to set the "images per page to replace" to like 9999 in the extension options)

...or if you just want to download all of them, get DownThemAll:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/201

Now I'm not so sure if it's legal to share that DLL since it comes with Vista... but I need to use it's icons for several things that shall not be named :P (no, the purpose they'll be used for is NOT illegal)

Other Discussion / Which 2GB MicroSD card should I get?
« on: July 14, 2007, 03:42:40 am »
http://tinyurl.com/2mr9jb

Look at that list there, it's ordered by rating.  I'm not too sure what I should get... I'm going to be using it with an M3 Perfect Lite, AKA this.

Even though I already have a Superkey, the price with and without the passcard is the EXACT same since it's on sale. :P

Note, I'll be getting the DS Phat/GBA shell for the M3 also if you care. :D

EDIT: Whoa, the sale on the m3 + passcard is gone. >_< DANG IT, I wanted free stuff. D:  I'll be getting THIS instead then. :P

EDIT 2: I've bought the Kingston that comes with only the MicroSD -> SD, so this topic is no longer needed, though I won't close it :P

I was thinking, maybe have weekly (or every-other weekly) online multiplayer matches for a game or something?  Seeing as we ARE a gaming-related community, something like this would make sense.  Something like Phosphor (LINK) or Quake 3 Arena would be good... or you could all download this 86MB 7z Quake2 game folder I uploaded for personal use (I also let Sol download it >_>;) and go insane with its multiplayer and it's maps :P (no CD required for multiplayer), though that's probably not legal.

I thought of this after I just had a nice multiplayer match in Phosphor with Fernando.

Seeing that I just lost my save data in Pokemon gold (probably from a dead internal battery), is there anyway to dump the (working) saves of a GB/C game and possibly use it in an emulator or something?

EDIT: Oh, being able to write the save back to the cartridge would be useful also.

Kinda offtopic, do GBA games use flash memory for their saves?  Since late N64 games did, I figured GBA games did too.
