Other Discussion / Do you love or hate coconut?
« on: May 20, 2007, 02:38:02 am »
I personally HATE coconut with a passion, along with my sister and dad.  Yet, my mother loves it.  And as of yet, I've never met someone that didn't either hate or love it, so I've turned to you guys!

Other Discussion / Open/Forwarded-port scanner?
« on: May 08, 2007, 01:37:50 pm »
Is there anyway to scan for open or forwarded ports?  I can't exactly access the router here at school to open a port for utorrent you know. :P  And 36 KB is pretty pathetic when normal HTTP downloads are up to 1MB (11Mbs) and I get faster speeds at home with open ports on 1.5Mb DSL.

Entertainment / Whoa! I was PWNING at CS 1.6!
« on: May 01, 2007, 12:43:29 am »

HOLY CRAP!

Last time I played (about a year ago) I SUCKED.  I would constantly get like 3rd from last and at times even last.  And I pretty much never had a score that was higher than my deaths.

I seem to have found a great liking to the SG552 :D  Finally... A weapon that I can use effectively!

http://www.ninjaringtones.com/

That site has sound files at the 13 frequencies specified.

---FOR OPTIMAL PERFORMANCE---

First, check if your speakers/headphones can play sounds at a high enough frequency (like my headphones only go up to 20KHz).  You can probably find this info on the manufacturer's website. (most play 20Hz - 20KHz)

Second, try to eliminate most other sound around you.

Third, be awake and not feeling sick, your hearing can be temporarily worse.

Forth, clean your ears :P
-----------------

I was able to hear the 17KHz sound, but with my not-so-good speakers.  I later tried my headphones that can play up to 20KHz, but by that time I was already getting tired and couldn't hear 17KHz anymore. XD  I'll have to wait until tomorrow to try again. :P

EDIT: I'm not gonna vote because apparently this test in inaccurate XD  I'll generate some WAV files at the specified KHz for the next ACCURATE test :P

Other Discussion / Can you hear this high-pitched sound?
« on: April 21, 2007, 11:18:57 pm »
I noticed last night during a commercial for a recorded TV show that there was a very high-pitched sound at one point...  Oddly enough, I was the only one that could hear it!  I recorded the sound to my PC and posted it here to find out if I'm just a freak or if my hearing is that good, which would explain why I always put audio at high bit-rates. :P

You can listen to it here:

here's the original image before my butchering in an attempt to make the text still readable:

uh... discuss?

EDIT: I just realized that I could have had my image height 150 pixels and not 120... OH WELL I'll redo and fix it tomorrow XD

This PC originally had a 533MHz Celeron.  We had a second PC with a 667MHz Pentium III, but its BIOS or something with the motherboard crapped out... (that's the 2nd PC I've killed due to a motherboard/BIOS issue in TWO WEEKS!)

Anyway, I replaced the 533MHz Celeron with the 667MHz P3.  Now everything works, but when I check the clock speed with running "dxdiag", it says ~500MHz! (though for the Celeron it said ~533MHz...).

WHAT THE !@#$% MAN.  I want the speed boost!

The PC is an HP Pavilion 8650C.

(and to those that don't know, YES my PCs are old)

In the Wii web browser, click on any text field or the "enter a web address" to bring up the keyboard.  Make sure auto-complete is on.  Type in "plays" (without quotes).  Right next to the word "plays" in the auto-complete bar will be "playstation"!

EDIT: Apparently it also recognizes "sony" and "microsoft" :P, but not "xbox"

EDIT 2: It even knows "asl", "b4", "btw" and "gr8"!

You know, like the one for the over world in the original Zelda or for the Great Bay in SSBM.

Other Discussion / Which mini SD card?
« on: November 11, 2006, 06:18:28 am »
One reason I'm looking into SD cards is for the Wii.  The only thing is that I was originally planning on maybe getting a mini or micro SD instead and sharing an SD card between my Wii and my DS with a future homebrew device.

But 2GB micro SD card are expensive... so screw that :P

So probably mini SD for me.

Here's some that look pretty good.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820233033

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820134126

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820208082

I'll probably go with the CORSAIR one... looks good to me, and I certainly like fast speeds :P  Even though it's more expensive, it seems like a good quality product. (kinda like comparing 1st party Nintendo controllers to 3rd party ones)

I still want your guys' opinions though.

And NO I will NOT go with less than 2GB.  I'm already using 850MB of my 1GB CF card for my DS alone!

EDIT: this is actually my first time buying from newegg... >_>;  Any idea how fast they'd ship to North-east Ohio? :P

http://wii.ign.com/articles/744/744751p1.html

I am... ecstatic. O_O

I think one acronym can describe this...

(NOTE: I realize this is the 4th time an Ocarina of Time game (or with it included) was available, but this IS a Zelda-based community, so I felt it should be included)

And Duck Hunt will be available too :P

Entertainment / Good games for NES, SNES, and Genesis (MORE RACING GAMES)
« on: October 28, 2006, 08:16:16 pm »
This is in preparation for the Wii's virtual console.  Now I'm sure not all of these games will be on it, but what the heck, give me a list anyway. :P I'm sure there will be a way to get other games on there eventually... >_>

ANYWAY, since I actually didn't have an NES and SNES, and only recently got a Genesis from my Uncle, I wanted to see what I'm missing out on. I already know several games you people would say, and I already have some Genesis games... so I'll try to keep an updated list of what you guys have said and what I already know.

Yeah, so, enlighten me, I'm was quite clueless about pre-N64 good games >_> (excluding Atari 2600 :P)

Oh, I REALLY should mention that I'm not an RPG freak.  I WILL play them, but I'm not like "GIMME RPGS, MORE RPGS!!!!!!" and stuff.  So -X-, you MAY want to limit your list to ones that a non-RPG-freak will play :P.

EDIT: oh crap my formatting got all screwed up from editing from retawq/DSlinux D:  TIME TO FIX IT
EDIT 2: yay, formatting fixed :D

EDIT 3: I never thought to say this, I'm a pretty big racing game fan.  This list needs more racing games :P

Originally being a snaker in Mario Kart DS for about 2 months, I learned how to do many powerslides very quickly; very important for even BEATING other snakers.  The only problem now, is that only snakers have been able to beat me in online, and that's with me NOT snaking.  I'm looking for anyone that thinks that they can beat me at MKDS online without even snaking.  Pedlya thinks he can, but he keeps giving excuses for not racing me... >_>

My friend code is in my sig.

Please specify the time of when to race and meet up in the ZFGC chat room, and PLEASE choose a day AFTER the day you said you'd race me.  I'm usually available between 4pm-8pm EST.

EDIT: here's somehing else I've done.  I beat all the staff ghost while snaking about a month and a half after buying Mario Kart DS.  6 months later, I beat all of MY OWN ghosts WITHOUT snaking.  And trust me, I was a good snaker.  But if I were to snake now... my hand would probably fall off XD

EDIT 2: I can now confirm that my hand pretty much DOES fall off.  I just tried rivals mode (since I'm so good, I'm only ever matched up with snakers >_>) and tried snaking again.  Needless to say "OW".  What was that, a powerslide a second?  Gotta be really close to that...

Entertainment / Mario says something different for MKDS boot on DS Lite?
« on: August 24, 2006, 10:07:17 pm »
I just read this topic:
http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2006/06/11/ds-games-respond-to-ds-lite-hardware/

Now these guys weren't very coordinated, and I REALLY wanted to know what this was.

All I ask is for you guys to report what your DS's firmware is, and what Mario says when booting Mario Kart DS AFTER you've already played it.  Re-firbished DSes may not be accurate due to possible firmware upgrades without hardware changes.  Make sure you re-boot your DS multiple times to make sure it's not random, because it is for some people's DS's.

Quote
DS firmware versions
The firmware version of a DS can be confirmed using the Pictochat Test: [1] [2]

1/Insert a DS cartridge into the DS.
2/Turn on the DS, open Pictochat and enter room A.
3/Remove the cartridge. [i think they mean ds cartridge]
4/Both screens should now be filled with a solid color.

Version 1: The DS will freeze
Version 2: Grayish Blue
Version 3: Dark Green
Version 4: Yellow
Version 5: Magenta
Version 6: Blue
iQue: Dark Green
DSLite: Purple
This was from>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_homebrew

I have 2 DSes, one silver with a version 1 firmware; Mario says yahoo.  On my refirbished DS with v5 firmware, he also says yahoo.  With a flashed firmware on both DSes, Mario still says yahoo.

Feedback / Can't browse ZFGC with skeetendo.com/proxi?
« on: July 31, 2006, 07:52:48 pm »
With http://skeetendo.com/proxi being my main internet filter get-around, I was at the library using the computer that's only for the book database and stuff which is on thier website. They just remove the address bar, bookmarks menu/buttons, and anything else that could change your site directly so you can't just "browse the web".  But they had a link to search engines on there, so I went to Google and typed in a site address.  Gamespot and ZFGC were blocked, but skeetendo.com wasn't.  I used that to get to ZFGC.  But I got an error about Bran371, and wondered "WTF?"

You can see it yourself.

Windows 2000 Professional
52x CD Drive
3.5" FLOPPY DRIVE!
30 GB Hard Drive
667MHz Intel Pentium 3
256MB RAM
AGP 32MB 3Dlabs Oxygen VX1 Video Card
2 USB 1.1 Ports

HP Pavilion N5250 Laptop (5 years old)

Linux, still going through distros (came with WinME and I replaced with Win2K Pro)

So um... what's a geek to do with crappy PCs? >_> (they can't even play flash at full speed!) And it's not like I can get a new one, I'll probably have to wait 2 years until I go to college or something and then my parents will get me a new laptop :D

NOTE: I DO have even older PCs that are like 10 years old <_<  But we really don't use them anymore.

Other Discussion / My uncle has an odd predicament with his PC modem
« on: July 19, 2006, 03:27:42 am »
Here's the problem: He recently upgraded his OS to Win2K and installed drivers and stuff.  Now apparently his modem disk drivers didn't work.  I was going to just go on the internet at my house and download the 2K drivers for him.  But get this: he doesn't know the actual chipset of the modem!  Now I could easily search for the computer name and brand for 2K drivers.... except that his PC was custom made >_______>  Is there ANY way I can figure out what the chipset of the modem is?  And no, he's not gonna spend money and get a new modem or DSL/Broadband.

Entertainment / HOLY SHIZZLE! Homebrew F-Zero X Track Editor for PC!
« on: June 26, 2006, 05:16:40 am »
http://www.mrfixitonline.com/viewtopic.php?p=7371

There it is people, the track editor for F-Zero X that we never had.  It's based off the track editor for the F-Zero X 64DD Expansion Kit, but since the rest of the world got ripped by it not making it out of Japan, here's your solution.

And if you're lazy and don't feel like making tracks, there's like 15-20 that come with it that you can race on.  And even better, Dave Phaneuf, a beta tester for the track editor, made a patch that replaces ALL THE TRACKS with his own custom tracks for a completely new game, F-Zero DXP!

http://www.angelfire.com/planet/randomthings/

Maybe we could even have a stickied topic where we could share our custom F-Zero X tracks.  I got several I'm making :D
