Defence - By Binary Phoenix

- Description -
Defence is a very simple concept for a game, its based on the retro 'Defend The Tower' genre of games. Basically there is a long winding path across the map and you have to place weapons down at strategic points to try and kill the enemies that follow the path before they get to the end (where the 'Tower' is).

At the moment this game is still in a very early phase (I only started it yesterday), however it is playable and pretty fun. All the graphics are currently programmer art (made by me :() and the audio is from free sources around the internet. When its done I hope to have far more impressive graphics and a far more featureful game.

- How to play? -
Simple, at the start of each round you get 5 seconds to buy and place weapons. To place a weapon click its icon in the hud and place it where you want (it must be outside the path, unless its a mine). After the 5 seconds are up the enemies come and you have to hope your defences hold. When all enemies are dead or gone, the cycle restarts. Each round the enemies get harder, and the rewards for killing them greater.

Weapons can also be sold back at 75% of the original price and upgraded, you can do these by selected the weapon and pressing either of the buttons in the bottom-right of the HUD.

I'm still trying to balance the hardness of the game at the moment, so It can be a little on the easy / hard side at times.

I didn't get very far, I bought a gun then I couldn't place it so I clicked on the outside of the level and it disappeared. Then I was out of money so they just kept going through.

Edit: I'm stealing some of those sounds

I didn't get very far, I bought a gun then I couldn't place it so I clicked on the outside of the level and it disappeared. Then I was out of money so they just kept going through.
Couldn't place? You do realise you have to place it outside the path right? Or if its a mine, in the path.

Apart from the round start sound, which is copyrighted to binary phoenix, and was made by QK. Your welcome to take whatever ones you want.

Anyhow all the assets will be placed in pak files when its done so you probably won't be able to do that :).

If your out of money the game ends. If it didn't then you still have enough cash to buy a cheap weapon :). FYI you can only buy and place weapons on the build time at the start of the round (thats what the time thing in the hud refers to, and why you get a ticking clock at the start).

Ali, you should try placing your first machine gun in the farthest up most corner on the right hand side of the screen.. One of those two corners are very affective.(I use the lower one more, actually).. Then start teaming up two machine guns at certain points. Take note of the orange circles when you click the weapons, too.. I always place them by shoot boundaries. I'll post a screenshot of how far I can get in a sec.. this game is really addicting :S.

EDIT: By the way, the previous was much more harder >_<..

O_o, not sure what on earth your doing there. Just try placing one right next to the path, and see if that works.

Download has been updated a bit. More enemies and a few other bits and pieces. Background music, a title screen and a highscore table are all coming soon.

looks like a loooooooad of drawing functions :P
nice.. thats just looks like plain fun to make
makes me nostalgic, like when i was using extended ascii in textmode to do a puzzle game

Yeh it is pretty fun, thats the main reason I'm doing it :D. I want a break from my more serious projects.

This reminds me of that oldskool starcraft map... I can't seem to get the name in my head at the moment...

BlitzMax actually. This was only really meant as a prototype, so I chose BlitzMax simple because I could do it quickly and relatively easily :).

Heh. That T-Shaped level is so easy. They have to pass through the same part twice, so it's pretty quick to make it impossible for any to survive. Just put a freezer at the top and bottom of the |, and the edges of the - and then turrets everywhere else. Update them to the max, surround everything by turrets with two more layers (updated to the max) and just leave it running.

I only lost 5HP points because of stupidity XD

Still, very fun. And I vote keep the graphics like this, they don't need updating. The retro look for this kind of game is perfect.
