You might have done what I used to always do. When laying out triangles after setting up vertices I'd do some counter clock wise and others clockwise. Then when they got rendered in any engine, unless you set up a shader that disables culling, only the polygons that were set up clockwise would be rendered, So the model looked like a big Holy mess!
