The two companies behind these games seem to be at a disagreement. Harmonix wants Guitar Hero controllers to work with Rock Band, but Activision wants to be "compensated". Here's what I think:
THEY SHOULD TRADE. They should have an agreement where they make a patch that allows Guitar Hero controllers to work with Rock Band and Rock Band guitars work with Guitar Hero!
Or does that just make too much sense?
-
I have yet to play Rock Band, but I think just having only one of these games instead of a company competing with another over a game that they've previously worked on >_>.
-
Isn't The Rock Band made by Harmonix as well? o_O

Harmonix = Rock Band
Activision = Guitar Hero

Oh... I swear Harmonix made both...
At the Spike VGAs Guitar Hero and Rock Band were both under Harmonix.

Harmonix made GH and GH2. Now they don't make Guitar Hero. Anyways, I've never played Rock Band, so I don't know what the controllers are like, but I'm gonna assume from the very existence of this topic that they're similar enough to be swapped. And yeah, they should work with either game.

Wait a sec....... I thought you CAN use the Guitar Hero guitars on Rockband!? Or at least that's what I was told.

you can, but not on PS3
-
I'm 99.9% sure you can use 360 Guitar Hero guitars on Rockband because for Guitar Hero you connect the guitar like you would the controller, and they probably doing that for Rockband aswell so it should work.
-
While I think that Activision has the right to restrict the use of their product, I also think that it's a jerk move. I mean, really, if it wasn't for Harmonix there wouldn't BE a Guitar Hero. They should show some respect.
Anyway, it'll probably get patched after a bit of public outcry.

Simply put, these peripherals need to be universal. If everyone's going to be releasing their own version of a guitar controller, the least they can do is make it work on all the games that could use it. For the consumer's sake.

*agrees*
And if the companies don't make their controllers universal, then some third party will release a universal controller and screw all of them, because people will buy that one.

Companies main interest is money so i doubt they'd do that.

True, they don't give a !@#$% about customers!
except for Nintendo, they care!

..By releasing a million different controller peripherals.
Cut that !@#$% out, H_B.

wait a minute; doesnt the Rock Band guitar have 5 extra buttons higher up on the neck...? If thats the case, how *could* the GH controller be compatible? its missing buttons <_<

Nintendo:
"We need a new ds, we only have two types of DS's out, we have 80 gameboy's"
"Let's make it so you have to manually copy games to an sd card to get them on there, despite the fact that games should come with save to sd card support"
"Woo, let's make more shitty Wii channels"
"LOL a big release like GH3 is coming for the Wii, we'd better make sure that activision doesn't screw it up *game comes out with only a mono sound option"
"LOL Friend Codes, i'm so glad Bob at Fisher Price gave us that idea to use"
"Online? Wahhhhh? PPL dun wan online, cuz were Nintendo and we no shiat"
"LOLOLOLOLOLOL friend codes"
"Let's put a USB port on the Wii, What will we use it for? Hell if i know'
"It prints money"
Nintendo doesn't care anymore about it's customers then Sony or Microsoft do.

Businesses care about the customers, or more specifically: their money. Hasn't this always been the norm?

Haha.. I love that.

And how about the e-Reader? Piece of !@#$%.
And the GCN/GBA link? In Animal Crossing (on Gamecube), you need to link to a GBA in order to visit the island, even though the GBA served no real purpose. It's just "Buy our stuff".

You don't actually need them. That's just for doing wicked guitar solos and is actually optional :P

There is also Final Fantasy: CC, you needed like 4 GBA's and 4 link cables.
WW: Tingle Tuner.

Solo sections can either use the solo buttons or regular buttons. The difference between solo buttons and normal ones is the size of the frets and the fact that you don't need to strum to use them.
