Feedback / Re: What Can We Do To Get More Life Here?
« on: June 09, 2014, 12:13:49 pm »
I know this thread has been silent for a little over 2 weeks, but I have a few things to say, and I just got in a little late (been completely inactive for a while, so I only recently saw this thread). In my defense, this is a topic that was started because of lack of activity. :P

My thoughts on the community project and why I haven't jumped in to help
I am so far behind the project's current status. I don't even know the story of KoT. I just know a few small details. And when I go into the CP section of the forums, it's just a big confusing mess in my eyes. Probably not to the people who have been working on it, but it really is confusing for someone like me who has barely been able to keep up with it. That's a big reason why I haven't helped in the past; I couldn't help because it was too hard to know what I needed to know to actually help and not just contribute something unnecessary or a double of something or something stupid like that. The other part of the reason was that it seemed like everyone was getting the story moving along well and no help was needed there. I spent a little time in the past couple of days trying to figure out what the current state of the project was and how I could get caught up on it in a way that I would be informed enough to know how to contribute, but really got nothing. I could probably do some concept art or maybe even some sprites, but I've been unable to do so, mainly because of the above reasons.
As far as the programming goes... yeah, I'm not familiar with GitHub and I honestly don't know if I could really help anyway as Steve and most every other programmer on ZFGC are much more knowledgeable on programming than I am (i.e. I mostly just know GML, and very VERY little JavaScript and so little C# knowledge that it's pretty much useless, plus a couple pretty outdated things like QBasic in DOS, and Visual Basic, plus some very minor knowledge on using GLSL for shaders). Pretty much can't get passed "hello world" on anything except with GML. XD
And one more thing: All the resource links and a lot of submission art and graphics are dead links now too. I know that resources have recently begun to get moved, so there's that, but I'm just saying that the whole CP section is a bit too cluttered and broken, and it makes it confusing and time-consuming to try to figure out what is going on.

Did someone say "mini game compo"?
Oho yes! I think the mini game competition is a great idea.
What would be really helpful is if we could start a thread, and - in addition to the rules and whatnot - we would have a section with lots of links to RESOURCES. I mainly just know Spriters Resource, but I know there are more places to get really good graphics, but then there is music and sfx too, and also game creation programs and tutorials for everything from the basics of spriting to various tutorials on things like Unity (and I think I just saw a thread that started and has some stuff like this?).
In addition to links to any/all good resources we can gather, a list of game types to help get people's minds going would be another great idea. My thinking with this stuff is just to remove as many hindrances to developing the games as possible. There are a ton of snack-sized games out there, and they can be used as base ideas to spark a mini game idea. Or maybe just think of a specific item from a Zelda game and make a mini game that is centered around the item. Mini games with the bow are like, duh, but what about the Hookshot? "Hookshot Havoc". There, and a game can easily come out of that. Or even a Sokoban clone with a Zelda dungeon setting, cuz Link loves to push blocks. Very easy to think up stuff. A mini game based off of an enemy or an NPC could go some place too. The monkey from ALttP? Something could come from that. Syrup and her broom. The timed silver rupee rooms that you find in OoT (and possibly other Zelda games that I'm forgetting). Lots of mini game ideas can come from Zelda-themed stuff. I think it would be cool to just stick with Zelda themes for the first mini game compo, but obviously it's up to everyone. I just think it'd be nice to have ZFGC be more... ZFGC. :P

I want to play a game with a Blue Eyes White Ganondorf.

Strangely, all that came to mind for that one was a simple trolling mini game where blue and white Ganondorf is the exact opposite of the normal version. You play as him, and he is always stupidly grinning and prancing along in a horizontal scrolling platformer in which everything is all green and sunshine with rainbows and there are flaming enemies that are trying to set ablaze little bunnies that Ganondorf is holding in his arms as he takes them from one side of the stage to the other side (which is the safety zone where the bunnies are safe for some reason). And that's it. I doubt that's what you had in mind though. :P Oh, and there is a dorky happy-go-lucky version/arrangement of the OoT Hyrule Field theme song that plays as background music..... yeap, someone other than me should be the one to make a game with blue and white Ganondorf, obviously.

Final thoughts with reasons why I think we definitely should do the mini game competition
I already have an actual good idea for a mini game, so I'm in if and when the compo happens. Really need something to warm up my programming skills, so it seems like an awesome thing to do for me personally, and I think it could help a lot of people here to make something small which can become a "stepping stone" so that it's easier to make something bigger next time; something like a fairly standard 2D Zelda fan game. It really can take a toll when you are constantly working on something huge for YEARS with nothing to show, and taking a little time to complete a snack-sized game can really bring up your spirits.

( ehh~ sorry, I talked a lot, and I do try not to bore people to death ::) aw well)

neike60, you should be on a game dev team as a spriter or something if you aren't. If there was an RPG made with your graphics, I'd totally buy it. Really liking that Zelda inventory. :)

The boss... well I really really want to show it off. But I also want it to be a surprise for the people that want it to remain a surprise. If I post it here everybody will see and it'll ruin the mystery. Like with the dungeon 1 boss I am spending a lot of time on it to make it a real reward for the player who reaches it.

While reading that, my reaction was kind of like this..

Except I'm not a cute girl.

To me, good boss fights really help make games more fun and to shine in a little extra special epic sort of way, so I'm excited to see that you are putting some effort into it. I'd rather wait to experience it in game. ;)

I encourage you guys to check his stuff out if you haven't already. If anyone knows of better covers, I WANT TO KNOW. I absolutely love this stuff.

OH YEAH, while I'm at it, SAO 2 is officially coming:  :o XD

Discussion / Re: Suggestions for Zelda 2 DX
« on: February 17, 2014, 06:19:30 pm »
I totally agree with Whitay. Basically, the overworld wasn't interesting and towns had practically zero depth as well, which isn't a surprise for a NES title, having limited resources. Adding some real content to these areas would help a lot. It would be interesting to see the overworld converted into the normal style for 2D Zelda games, where you don't have a zoomed out version. That said, it would be a pretty big amount of work if you wanted to do it right.

I personally like Zelda 2 because of its difficulty, and many games today are just too easy. I think a lot of people might say they like easy games, but in many cases, I expect it's only because they didn't give harder ones a real chance. When a game is too easy, it's just not very rewarding/fun to play it. There are ways to design a game to be fair while making it challenging at the same time. Just be careful. If it gets too easy, the game becomes far less satisfying to many players. If it's too hard and unfair, players will just get frustrated. The key is to make it challenging, but use hints intelligently (the best hints are the hints that make the player think they figured something out on their own) and save points of some kind to give players a chance to learn how to overcome difficult areas, to learn enemy patterns, etc.

Got another one that I think is worth a listen or a download for anyone who likes to have VGM play in the background as they work:
http://soundcloud.com/frznfire/toxic-ice-fortress-beta-track

I was trying to go for a nice atmospheric icy sound, mixing it with whatever deadly green acid sounds like. :P My RPG is planned to have some interesting places, so I'm having some fun with music to fit the fantasy setting. Ah, I love fantasy RPGs. The art and the beautiful worlds alone often get me sold. It's like... fantasty.

EDIT: Might as well show the quickie concept art that goes with it:

Some platform sprites.

What is it? Are those original characters? The colors and everything are perfect, imo. Wow. The biggest rock's details seem a little strange somehow (can't pinpoint the reason), but loving everything else.

I like how you design the levels (just basing this off of the screens; haven't played the demo). It's not like most people do it with their fan games and I find it to be more interesting and unique.

@ FrozenFire: Finally got around to (almost all of) your feedback from two months ago. Would you be willing to test the new situation after the next weekend?

I'd be happy to. And the latest progress on the lighting looks nice. ;)

Interesting. How is the lighting system going to work? From the screens so far, it doesn't really make sense or seem consistent, but I'm pretty sure that's because it's just set up for testing stuff? And I'm pretty sure everyone's projects slow down during the holidays, so no big deal, no need to be sorry.

Very cool, though a bit sad that I already own it. There's really only one other game I plan to get during this sale: "Valdis Story: Abyssal City". I'm waiting to see if it will go any lower in price though. Might get Spelunky or Rogue Legacy (which already went pretty low, meh), but I'm limiting how much I spend and Valdis Story catches my interest more than either of those games. I look forward to the day when Planetary Annihilation is about $20, but I expect the possibility of that happening won't be until next Christmas or later.

It may or may not have been a good suggestion... I attached a pic that should fairly clearly show you what I meant. I made the white part of the wall to actually show what I meant, and the red lines show all of the places I was thinking it would need it (saved me time that way). I did mess up on it though, because I was in a hurry. The two bottom parts should not have straight lines the whole way because the wall isn't formed that way.

I say it may or may not have been a good suggestion because there has always been a bit of an oddity with perspectives in 2D Zelda games which appears in certain houses and/or dungeons. For example, sometimes bookcases against walls don't actually look correct when the view of the area is taken as a whole, but that's just the way it is (there are reasons why it's done this way). It's something that has always bothered me a bit, but it's even in the official 2D Zelda games, even MC, so maybe it's not something to worry about. I tend to be very picky when it comes to perspectives and consistency, which is funny, because that's why I find 3D modeling easier than spriting for games like Zelda, because perspective is taken care of by the camera rather than drawing things in a certain perspective. If I draw something and the perspective is just a little bit odd, it will bother me and I won't use the sprite in anything. So perhaps it's just me. It really is nice looking.

I think it looks pretty nice actually. I do think the diagonal parts of the sparkling walls should not be jagged, and that should help with the perspective looking right, but besides that, it looks good to me. Nice work! :)

I ran across some really interesting info on Zelda and wanted to make a thread dedicated to the more odd and lesser known things about Zelda. If anyone has any other content to contribute, feel free, but please no stupid/troll/fake/joke stuff. If theories are posted, they've got to have some actual game content that gives proof for the theory. This thread is meant to favor proven facts more than theories.

I think it would be cool to see people use some of this info in their fan games, or to at least to get new motivation for their fan games by watching some of these videos. If anyone is like me, this kind of stuff will give you a renewed excitement for Zelda. Whatever the case, I hope that this thread can be a sweet source of inspiration and cool ideas for Zelda fan games.

Note: There is a little overlap of content in these videos, but surprisingly, not much.

I'm not sure what's wrong, but I don't see any sprites in your post..? I tried refreshing the page and clearing my cache. I noticed that neike60's posted graphics often don't show up for me unless I refresh the page (which is really odd), but that's not the case here, I'm seeing nothing, no matter what.

So all I can give right now are two really useful tutorials:
http://makegames.tumblr.com/post/42648699708/pixel-art-tutorial
http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299

Knowing the information in those tutorials will save a lot of time. Without the proper knowledge, it's basically a guessing game until you get a sprite to look like you want. But when you come at spriting with the "how" and "why" answers, you get better sprites and you make them faster, and if there is a problem, you can discern what it is and proceed to fix it, rather than just wonder why it doesn't look good and aimlessly modify the sprite in hopes to make it look better.

Ok! thanks for your exemples! So i try an other kind of shading, here is an exemple for goron link

is it better?

Oh yes, very nice improvement!

I did a little more editing. I made the outlines one solid dark color this time around (before there were 3 or 4 blacks..?), and I also gave the same contrast+ treatment to neike60's modified version of your sprite.

1st = original, 2nd = my last final edit but with the single color outline, 3rd = neike60's modified version with contrast, 4th = my modification of neike60's modification (lol)

As far as outlines go: I understand that sometimes you don't want one solid outline color, and rarely do you ever want to use a total black (if ever) but with professional sprites I usually see a very dark grayish color or a very dark shade of the base color that it's outlining. Light source color and warmth from the environment are probably taken into consideration with professional stuff, among other things I have no clue about. I also have seen people do more fancy "broken" outlines. I believe those are called "Sel-out" (selective outlines), but getting that to look good across various backgrounds is something I have yet to really test out myself.

Anyway, I look forward to more. I had fun fooling around with your Link sprite. :P

Well, I'm certainly no DJvenom or Sinkin, but I did a little edit (made a quick and kinda meh background for it just because):

In my experience, I've found that small sprites don't need a whole lot of colors, or at least not a lot of shades of each color. Having too many shades for a small sprite will make it blurry, losing definition. And when two colors are very close to each other, you can sometimes find a color in between them and combine the 2 colors to just 1. I did that on the hair and skin shadow color.

The 3 sprites, from left to right: Your original, my contrast edit and color merge (just the one color merge), made even more adjustments in an attempt to make the depth seem more correct and to further give it definition.

Obviously the edits are just examples and could still use some work. I'm sure that DJvenom, Sinkin, or Leduardo, could be of more help, as they are all much more experienced. I've still got a lot to learn, but I hope I helped regardless.

Welcome to ZFGC, Pixel Pirate! :)

I like the sprites, but they really need more contrast, because the colors are blending together so much that the detail is blurry. A healthy dose of contrast is especially important with sprites and pixel art because losing just a little bit of detail often means the whole sprite is ruined.

btw, the stance that your adult Link sprite takes is very cool.
